DFS Servers not running in HA mode

I have a DFS server set up as our main namespace.  We then replicate from our remote offices to the main office.  The main server is a PDC (yeah, I know).  For some reason when the main server is not connected to the remote offices the remote offices cannot access their files anymore.  In addition, the performance of the files feels as if they are working off the PDC as opposed to their branch office server.

I don't have enough posts to post images so.... If I sign into the PDC and bring up the DFS Management, select Namespaces, then select the branch name from the list.  I then look at the folder targets tab, right click on the branch name, and it says under advanced it's the first among all targets.  Above it in the list on the right hand side is the PDC name.  If I right click on it, etc, it says it's the last among all targets.

So, the way I understand it, the computers in the branch office should see SRV1 as their primary (which is in a closet near them) and our PDC (50 miles away) only when there's a problem with their local server.  What *appears* to be happening is the opposite.

DFS Replication suddenly stopped working

Hi,

I'm having a little difficulty restoring file replication between two of our servers. I'd appreciate some thoughts...

Background information:
We have got two replication groups (with two servers in each totalling 4 different servers. E.g. Group 1 - Server A <-> Server B & Group 2 - Server C <-> Server D.

We haven't made any major infrastructure changes or configuration changes recently but group 2 has simply stopped working. This is what I've tried so far:

Deleting and starting again
Connectivity checks:
pings by IP resolve
pings by name resolve to IPv6 (I wasn't aware we were using IPv6 in our infrastructure)
nslookup resolves and lists all IP's inc. IPv6

RPC ping resolves ok, output: RPCping completed 1 calls in 1ms 1000 T/s or 1.000ms/T

All windows firewalls are off and the replication is within the same LAN and the other group is working fine.

Portqry on ports TCP 139 come back as not listening and 445 TCP is listening.

The error I'm seeing in the Event log are:
Event ID: 5002
The DFS Replication service encountered an error communicating with partner Server-A for replication group Rep1.
Partner address: (This is correct)
Optional data shows a wins of: Server-A
Partner IP Address is listed as IPv6

The service will retry the connection periodically.
Additional info:
Error 1825 (A security package specific error occurred.)
Connection ID: X
Replication Group ID: Y

DCDIAG is coming back clear on the DC and repadmin /showreps is also clear.

Browsing across the network to these machines works ok.

Earlier this week, I recreated the replication group and did manage to get one half working but I couldn't get the replication working both ways. I tried recreating the group again from scratch and I'm now getting:

"Some servers cannot be contacted. Do you want to use them anyway? The server's OS version cannot be retrieved. Access is denied"

Can anyone possibly shed some light on what else I could try please?

Thanks in advance

FSRM - Shares & Templates

$

I have a large number of user home directories which have quotas setup (FSRM).

I would like to move some of the directories to another volume, I understand that both

the share and permissions will change if using a cut & paste approach. I am seeking a solution to automate this process (recreating share along with permissions and the new quota).

In addition I would like to have a larger quota applied on the new target volume for each user directory.

Ideas?

TIA

After HDD Disk Perf test, write speed is capped at 9MB/s

I decided to run a HDD performance test because it felt like my Windows 2012 R2 box was running a bit sluggish. When it came to sequential write test using a 1GB file, it took over 10 minutes to complete. After some research, I noticed that Windows Server disables write-caching to avoid data lost, and wondered if that had any impact on write performance? Additionally, online performance review of my HDD indicated a 70MB/s Read and 70MB/s sequential write performance. I also wonder when they conducted that test, if they had write-caching enabled. Is this normal?

[Forum FAQ] Frequently Asked Questions for Storage Pool issues

$

Q1: When we create a 2-way mirrored virtual disk in Storage Pool by GUI, why the maximum size is much smaller than it should be?

Example: A Storage pool with 4 physical disks (2x8GB + 2x5GB). The size of a 2-way mirrored virtual disk should be 13GB (Figure 1).

Figure 1

However system shows only 6GB in creating the virtual disk (Figure 2).

Figure 2

Cause: By default, Windows Server UI will optimize the creation for performance. Thus it will be a 2-column, 2-copy storage space.

Solution: In order to get a 1-column storage space, we need to create it with PowerShell cmdlet:

New-VirtualDisk –FriendlyName MySpace –StoragePoolFriendlyName MyPool –NumberOfColumns 1 –UseMaximumSize

Storage Spaces, how to replace a disk in tiered storage

$

On my Server 2012r2 box I have a Storage Spaces "Simple" volume made up of 3 disks: 1x64gb SSD and 2x1tb rotational disks.  On this volume I have created a tiered storage virtual disk consuming the entire volume.  Now that this whole system seems to be working really nice i want to swap out the 64gb SSD for a 240gb SSD.  Instructions on storage spaces say to simply right click and "remove disk" on the desired drive and allow it to copy the data to another disk, thats not working.  The problem seems to be that the volume is technically 100% full because of the virtual disk for tiered storage.  I attempted to resize the virtual disk but it says its not supported.  How can I replace this disk?

DFS Quotas for Groups?

Hello,

as I read, DFS supports quotas only on a "per User" Basis.

Is it possible, to get Quotas on a Folder for Groups or Quotas on a folder at all, not counting single user Data but counting all Data in the Folder?

BranchCache Server 2012 R2 Troubleshooting

$

I followed the TechNet instructions on how to setup a File Server and include BranchCache capabilities.  I followed the same tutorial (and a few others) to setup the BranchCache Hosted Server at the remote site and then set the group policies so clients could find the hosted server and use it.

However, when copying files nothing shows up on the counters to indicate that it is working.  I know it isn't working because secondary clients don't use the cache.

Can someone help walk me through troubleshooting BranchCache and figure out why this isn't working?  I've checked the logs but can't seem to find where it would tell me what's wrong.  Any help is much appreciated.

Detecting and Clearing SCSI reservations in Windows 2003 & 2008 servers

We are having issues with some of the Windows 2003 & 2008 servers with high SCSI reservations which is highlighted as a concern for the performance issues with the Storage array. Can someone suggest with the commands to detect SCSI reservations on the server side and also to clear the SCSI reservations. Is there any ways to prevent high SCSI reservations?

Permission Inheritance

I have an issue setting permissions on a folder. I am migrating a system from a WinSVR2003 box to a WinSVR2008R2 box. There is a folder on a share named \\Reports32\Hospitals. Within the Hospital folders are Crystal Report files that different hospitals will need to access. Each Crystal Report file will need separate permissions for each hospital. User from each hospital will reside in a security group and that group will be applied to each file. One hospital should not be able to access the other hospitals report.

Permissions for the CR File on the existing system

Here are the permissions on the folder.

On the new machine I'm attempting to mirror these permissions. I must first remove the inheritance of Everyone from the Reports32 folder.

It won't allow this.  I tried working from the file back out to the folder but it will not allow me do do that either.

I'm new at this and I did not setup the original system. I've read allot of posts but can't seem to find anything with the same situation.

Can anyone offer any help? Thank you in advance.

Re-Organizing Network Drive Folders: confused on how to retain permissions

$

We are reorganizing our network drive into 5 new folders. I need to lock down the 5 folders to only let uses have "read" permission to the top level folder and they need to keep their current folder permissions. I can use Robocopy to copy the data and ICACLS if need be, but I suspect there is an easier way as just moving the data through Explorer is quick but permissions aren't working out well.

Currently:

\\server\common is where everything is stored (about 500 GB and 100 folders)

Moving to:

\\server\common\folder1  folder2 folder3 etc.

I need to give the users only READ permission on the new folder1 folder2 and they can retain the current permissions that they have the folders.

Windows 2k8 R2, NTFS only set, everything is on the same drive.

And any suggestions on how to best fix broken links with Excel on files that get moved? I see the app LinkFixer.

This could be a big mess. Any suggestions are appreciated.

RecycleBin is empty yet drive still shows storage in use

On a Windows 2008 R2 EE server, I have a G drive, and it had an Exchange 2010 database on it. I removed the DB from Exchange, and I proceeded to remove the DB and other files from the G drive.

I answered yes to permanently deleting the DB file since it is too big to recover.

After emptying the RecycleBin, I noticed that the G drive still had 20GB in use.  I don't see anything.

When I looked at the Shadow Copy tab, I see 20GB in use, but I don't have Shadow Copy enabled.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

DFS trips often

Hi

I have a file server windows 2008 R2 having around 18 shared drives. In a domain controller, DFS is configured targeted these drives. At least once in a week users loose connection to access the DFS namespaces. Checked all logs in File server and domain controller for any clue. Nothing seen.

During the problem, i can browse the DFS link and access the drives in the File server itself, but not in the DC or from any networked systems. I should say network is ok and i can ping, rdp to all servers including file server and DCs. From any networked system i can see the DFS targets but cannot browse the contents.

Only way to bring back the service normal is to restart the file server.

Is there anyway to pinpoint where the exact issue is? Where should i check for an hint? DFS/Application/System event viewers are all ok and doesnt show any errors related.

Thanks for any help.

Strange Defrag error 0x80070057

$

Hello everyone,

I am observing a strange issue with defrag on Windows Server 2012 R2. There is a hardware RAID volume using deduplication in VDI mode and containing some virtual machines. Deduplication works okay, chkdsk shows no logical errors and RAID is consistent, but defrag reports error "0x80070057 The Parameter is Incorrect" after some minutes or even hours of runtime.

I've tried to search for such error but all I've found was about SSD that do not need defragmentation at all. I have also found an advice to set the CopyFileBufferedSynchronousIo to "1" but I am a bit unsure if it is safe in my case.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here's a sample output of defrag (sorry for Cyrillic localization):

Server 2012 - iSCSI Virtual Disks Missing After Reboot

$

Hi guys.  I recently had to reboot my Windows 2012 Storage Server.  When it came up, the physical disks that the iSCSI virtual disks reside on were visible, as were the VHD files, but the targets were gone.  I looked in the File and Storage Services -> iSCSI but it says 'There are no iSCSI virtual disks', even though the VHD files are clearly there.  When I try to import the already existing ones, it gives me an error because that file already exists in the place I want to put it.  These are very large VHD files so moving them to other storage and then re-importing them could take days, if not longer.

The iSCSI targets are still visible under 'View All Targets', but they are no longer associated with their VHD files.  How do I reassociate them?  And why did the list of VHD files in File & Storage Services->iSCSI disappear in the first place!?

Thanks for any help!

Windows 7 + Server 2008 Standard + Folder Redirect (Documents) + offline folders

$

I have a laptop user that I cannot resolve the OFFLINE availability for her DOCUMENTS folder.  I have SYNC set. I go to Control Panel and activate SYNC.  It displays that  it is SYNCING.  Let it run all day.  But as soon as she disconnects from the network, the folder is unavailable (everything is grayed out).

The DOCUMENTS folder is redirected to a QNAP NAS.

Any ideas or suggesitons will be greatly appreciated!
