Work folders not working

$

Hi everyone. I am trying to configure work folders on W2012 R2.

I completed server configuration (as described in all procedures) and I have no error in server logs.

Port 443 is in use by "windows sync share" service (if I stop this service the port is not in use anymore; so...)

I cannot use auto discovery because one of the domain controllers is still 2008R2, so I am configuring the clients using the direct url and this error is shown:

On this server I have those roles installed:

- IIS (with one FTP site)

- WSUS with HTTP port 81 and HTTPS 8350)

- HyperV (not used, only as backup)

- WDS

- File server with DFSR

Network drives have significant delay if not accessed for > 1 hour

I’m moving our file server from Netware to Windows Server 2012.  I’ve setup a test share. While Netware never gave us any delays in accessing the drive, our test group immediately started complaining that our network drives “would not come up right away”.

We’re hosting the share on a Server 2012 box and I used both Windows 7 (as that’s the standard in our office) and 8.1 to test the issue.  I noticed that the problem shows itself if a user hasn’t accessed the drive for more than an hour. The effects are also exaggerated on Windows 7: if a user hasn’t used the drive, it takes on average 25 seconds to open the drive. This is lessened somewhat with Windows 8, which either doesn’t have the problem or has a delay of 5 seconds to open the drive. This is an improvement, but it’s still not acceptable considering we had *no* delays with Netware.

The first thing I surmised was a problem with the network drivers on my test machines, so I updated them. It didn’t affect the issue at all.

So then I assumed the problem was coming from some sort of reconnection issue from the end machine to the server, so I attempted to follow the fixes located at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297684 in order to keep the connection alive indefinitely. This had no effect. The delays were just as long as they had been prior to making any changes.

I’m beginning to run out of ideas as to why our test network drive has these delays. Thanks in advance for any insight you all might have.

edit: Upon further testing, I have the following information:

- HD spindown times on the server are set to 0 mins, so there is no spin-down occuring.
- I haven't been able to find any useful information in the server's event logs.
- There is no third-party software installed on the server.
- There are no extra services running on this server. Just the file share.
- My network provider setup is as follows: NetWare Services >> Microsoft Remote Desktop Session Host Server >> Microsoft Windows Network >> Web Client Network

Server 2012: Converting Basic To Dynamic Disk With Deduplication Activated

Hello everybody,

we would like to convert our basic disk, which has two primary partitions, to a dynamic disk for management reasons. The secondary partition has deduplication turned on. Are there any issues which could arise from doing this, or is it safe to convert the disk?

This is a physical remote system with only RDP access, so it would be hard recovering from a possible malfunction. Backups exist, however taking an image of the boot partition for restoration use is not an option.

Can't access shared folders on win 2012 R2 with Android phone

Hello, this is my first post here so I don't know if I choose the right category......

But anyway, my problem is like this

I‘ve got a win 2012 r2 server(192.168.1.10), installed with essential experiences and anything comes with that;

A win 7 PC(192.168.1.2) connected to the server by connecter;

A Android smart phone(192.168.1.5).

There is no problem with the PC visiting the server's SMB share & the phone visiting the PC's SMB share, but I can't access the server's share from my smart phone.

When I'm using x-plore I got “failed to connect", and when using ES file explorer, I got a flash of ”please wait“ and nothing happens.

I've tried turn off the firewall ,no help.

checked the firewall log , I found "2014-03-14 16:08:30 ALLOW TCP 192.168.1.5 192.168.1.10 33531 445 0 - 0 0 0 - - - RECEIVE". I suspect this means the firewall has nothing to do with my problem.

checked event log, no finds(I'm not sure what to look for, but I didn't find anything about my phone's ip under things starts with SMB( ex: SMBClient, SMBServer.....))

enabled ”send unencrypted password to 3rd-party SMB server“ in local security policy, nothing changed

I have no idea where the problem lies, can anyone help me with this stuff?

Thanks

When I issue the following command:

Dfsdiag /testdfsintegrity /dfsroot:\\domain.com\users /recurse /full

I get warnings like:

However when I do a get-acl on both folder targets, the results are identical.

Why is dfsdiag saying they are not?

How to migrate File server to NAS device?

$

All right so here's the scenario.

An external forest level trust is setup between two forests A & B as recently as we acquired the company B.

Users from forest B were already migrated to domain A.

Now I need to migrate file server from domain B to my domain A but the target where we need to move file shares is a NAS device, so basically we cannot do a simple server migration from domain B to domain A.

We need to copy over the data+ACL+Share permissions from fileserver in domain B to a NAS device in domain A whereas of course ACL permissions on file server present in domain B will obviously be as per source domain user accounts, example ACL permissions currently will show as "B\user1".

So whats the best way to perform this in order to maintain the permissions & data.

Another question how do we copy share permissions from file server to NAS as I can robocopy the data with security permissions but how to copy over all the share permissions to destination NAS?

Some folder is empty when enabled access-based enumeration + Deduplication

Hi Everyone,
Background:
Recently we migrated the file server to win2012 r2.  We have enabled dedupication and enabled access-based enumeration.

The data stored in D drive vm, so we just connected the D drive to the new 2012 r2 server.  Security rights all the same as before.

Problem:
People reported that they can see their files and folders directly under their client folders, however some of the sub-folders are empty. when we checked from our file server, those sub-folder have files inside.

We did some test, we tried to disabled access-based enumeration, checked from user shared drive and see the files are visible again inside the folder.

Has anyone experienced that before and can give me the solution?

Thanks!!

Adding file server resource manager on a running file server

$

Hi, ive recently taken over the responsibility for our fileservers.

The server is running server 2008r2 and is set up with discquota limiting users to 1GB. All fine so far.

However, this server is used as a place for our users to share common files among each other. Making discquota very confusing and annoying for the users, having to share ownership of the files to get all 3gb of pictures or whatever saved in the same folder.

And so to my question. Ive read about File Server Resource Manager, and it seems pretty straight forward to just install it and set quotas on folders instead of users.

But how will this effect the current discquota? Will they still be in effect, or will those settings be nulled when i install file server manager?

Witch quota takes priority? Lets say that user A has 1GB of space according to discquota. But i create a folder and set the quota on it to 5GB in file server manager. How much will user A be able to save there?  1 or 5GB?

Extended RAID Disk Not Showing Extra Capacity in Storage Pool Physical Disks

$

Hi,

I added a RAID 5 Disk (3 * 4TB = 7.28TB usable) from a Dell Poweredge R720 server to my storage pool named "Backups".

The Physical disk was nearly full so I extended the RAID disk using Dell Server Administrator by adding another physical disk to the RAID array (4 * 4TB = 10.91TB usable).

However, in the Storage Pool GUI in Server 2012 SP1 the Physical Disk still only shows as 7.28TB even though the disk is actually 10.91TB.

Can anyone explain how I can extend the capacity of the physical disk in Storage Spaces to match the actual size of the now extended physical RAID disk? I have tried rebooting and refreshing but it doesn't update the new size.

When I look in the orginal disk management tool I can see the RAID disk listed at the correct 10.91TB.

Also when I use powershell I get the following:

Issue with Deduplicated files and Mac OSX 10.9.2

$

Running a Windows 2012 R2 DFS with Deduplication enabled on the storage drives.  Both Macs and PCs regularly interact with the system with no issues.

However with Apple's rollout of 10.9.2 SMB2 'fix' users are no longer able to correctly interact with any files on the file server with the "SparseFile" attribute, which appears to be from the deduplication of the file.

When the Macs attempted to download a "sparsed" file they get an error along the lines of "you do not have permissions to copy this file".  This is annoying enough, but the biggest head ache is when a user tries to copy a folder that has sparced files in it, the folder and its files are seemingly copied but the Mac does not copy the sparced files... and give no indication to the user that it ran into an error... Finder just closes like the operation was completely successful.

Even more annoyingly the user can open the file directly from the server, and work on the file with seemingly no issues, but when they save the file the changes are often not saved, and the user gets NO feedback from the application or OS.

It seems the Macs are seeing the file as having a NULL file size and they skip the file when they download it.  This was not the case in 10.9.1 or any other version of any other OS we have tested.  We have entered this as a bug to Apple and hope they will fix it... mostly just posting this for the next admin who is pulling his hair out trying to figure this out.

For a work around you can force the Apple 10.9.2 system to use SMB1 by using the CIFS protocol to connect to the server instead of normal SMB... which is not ideal but will work for now.

Antivirus software exclusions for DFS and Hyper-V

I am rolling out an updated antivirus solution to our DFS server and Hyper-V (Windows 2008 and 2012) and I am curious of the following:

1. What are the exclusion suggestions for Hyper-V servers?  I found a URL that showed the exceptions to add but I thought there would be more for Hyper-V to exclude.

2. What are the specific exclusions to include for a DFS server?  I read somewhere that there were some DFSR hidden folders that need to be included but I would like to know if there is an official suggestion from Microsoft of what files/folders need to be excluded.

Wierd DFS Issue

Hello,

I have a weird DFS issue I am having trouble fixing. Currently users at one of our site uses 1 file server which has DFS namespace enabled but is not replicating however if the users map to it via IP or Namespace or UNC they are sometimes able to see the file and sometimes they just see the DFSRoot folder.

Any idea what could be causing this issue? The files aren't replicating and its the same location.

Thanks

Anywhere access domain users and rights

$

Hello,

I am working with anywhere access on server 2012 R2, and I am wondering if it has the ability to use the existing domain user rights to existing file share's and folders instead of using its own system.

For example I added a new share and pointed it to an existing folder thinking it would be able to see all of the files in it.  That did work, but then it also gave all users in my domain rights to that folder.  So it is not using the existing domain user rights to the folder that was already existing.  Is this a bug or a feature?

Also I cannot add a folder on our storage cluster.  The cluster servers and the clustered server doesn't show up in the list.

It could be that this is the wrong product for what I am trying to do, but it seems like it has all of the features that I want.

Dan.

Windows 7 + Server 2008 Standard + Folder Redirect (Documents) + offline folders

I have a laptop user that I cannot resolve the OFFLINE availability for her DOCUMENTS folder.  I have SYNC set. I go to Control Panel and activate SYNC.  It displays that  it is SYNCING.  Let it run all day.  But as soon as she disconnects from the network, the folder is unavailable (everything is grayed out).

The DOCUMENTS folder is redirected to a QNAP NAS.

Any ideas or suggesitons will be greatly appreciated!

Enumerating SMB Sessions and local share access on Windows Server 2012

$

I am encountering two issues after building up a new three-node Windows Server 2012 failover cluster.

1)  When using local Computer Management --> System Tools --> Shared Folders --> Sessions to list current SMB sessions, the list appears very slowly, one connection at a time.  As we have hundreds of sessions, it never completes, and the snap-in becomes unresponsive.  If I remotely manage the server from a 2008 R2 box, I can enumerate the sessions immediately, with no delay whatsoever.  This is happening on all three cluster nodes.

2)  In order to migrate the data to this new cluster, I built out new volumes on an intermediary server (running Server 2008 R2) on a new storage array.  After going through the cluster build and adding storage, everything seemed to be working great -- I was able to add all of the shares on each required Client Access Point, and remote access to the shares is working too.  When I use my domain admin account to connect to the file server via UNC, I see all of the shares and can connect to each one without a problem.  If, however, I am logged on locally to one of the cluster nodes, I cannot access the actual folders that correspond to the share names.

For example, let's say there's an IT folder on the server located at P:\Data\IT.  That folder is shared as "Tech".  If I go to\\server\Tech, I can access the data, but if I am on the server and try to open up P:\Data\IT, I get a message that says "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder."  If I do that, it runs through the entire folder contents and gives my domain admin account explicit full access permissions to everything, even though "Domain Admins" is a member of "Server\Administrators" both that local group and "domain\Domain Admins" have "full control" NTFS permissions to the folder.

Thank you,
Adam
