On a Windows 2008 R2 EE server, I have a G drive, and it had an Exchange 2010 database on it. I removed the DB from Exchange, and I proceeded to remove the DB and other files from the G drive.
I answered yes to permanently deleting the DB file since it is too big to recover.
After emptying the RecycleBin, I noticed that the G drive still had 20GB in use. I don't see anything.
When I looked at the Shadow Copy tab, I see 20GB in use, but I don't have Shadow Copy enabled.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hello TechNet.
I am fairly new to WS coming from a background with linux, so please forgive me if I have missed something obvious.
I have Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard set-up with two virtual machines, one for exchange (WS 2012) and one for AD and DS (WS 2012 R2). The physical machine does only handle the VM's and aStorage Pool(split into two virtual thin mirror disks).
The Storage Pool is JBOD with two 128GB SSD andthree 1TB+ disks and two smaller, random disks (see below). I noticed that I couldn't move files to the VD(due to no free space) and saw usage on the VD being around 128GBI presume this was related to the 128GB SSD.
Also the GUI reported both warning and degraded on the virtual disks.
I retired both SSD's via PowerShell and tried repair before (and after) adding a
1.5TB HDD to the pool. Repair didn't seem to work so I added a 2TB HDDand tried it again.
This time one SSD reported being usage at close to zero. I tried to use remove commands via both Power Shell and GUI since I presume the disk is no longer in use. This generated error about the disk being in use.
I went on stopping the VM's and de-attached the virtual disks and tried again to no avail.
This lead me to power off the server and remove the disk. I started up and made sure everything was working correctly.Except for warnings, everything seemed fine. I powered off the server again and added another2TB HDD in the slot of the old SSD.
I still cant use more space nor does the repair command work (tested both PowerShell and GUI). I read that sometimes windows fixes problems like this over time so I let it rest over the weekend. This made no difference and my problems are still the same.
Server manager reports available space at 8.4TB, Free space at
7.75TB and with both VD's degraded and a allocated use of190GB and 132GB.
My current status looks like this:

What options do I have to resolve this and/or what did I do wrong?
Hi,
DC 2012 windows server error code 4412..
The DFS Replication service detected that a file was changed on multiple servers. A conflict resolution algorithm was used to determine the winning file. The losing file was moved to the Conflict and Deleted folder.
what i have to do to resolve this issue
I inherited a Windows Server 2003 R2 standard edition x86. After doing a bit of checking on it, I see it has not been backed up for some time. Drive C is handled by an Adaptec controller card and has 2 drives in Raid 1 configuration with total space of 68.2GB with 33GB free and fragmentation of 1%. Drive D is handled by a 3Ware controller card and has 9 drives in Raid 5 configuration (8 active, 1 spare) with total space of 7.27TB with 4.65TB free and fragmentation of 1%.
When looking at either drive thru Windows explorer, properties, Shadow Copies tab it shows "Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for shadow copies. Error 0x8004230f: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation."
If I check thru command prompt and run vssadmin commands I get the following.

Checking error 1 event id 12302 is says to make sure COM + is set to Automatic. It is set to automatic and is running. It also says to command prompt vssadmin list writers and verify none are reporting errors. None are reporting an error. It also says to check volume shadow copy in services. Start up set to manual, which it is and it will run with no problems.
Checking error 2 event id 12293 it says to use vssadmin create shadow for each provider. If I do that I get the same errors.
I have done a lot of research on this and found 3 hot fixes from Microsoft. None of the 3 apply to the error messages that I am getting. But to give it a good try, I have applied all 3 hot fixes and none made it better, and none made it worse (different error messages). I have also tried the following
cd /d %windir%\\system32
Net stop vss
Net stop swprv
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll
regsvr32 Vssapi.dll
regsvr32 Vssui.dll
net start vss
net start swprv
The only errors I get when doing this is the following.
"msxml4.dll not found" I understand this as my system now has msxml6 and in doing some research msxml6 and msxml4 are not compatible and msxml6 replaced msxml4, so I can live with that, I guess.
"Vssapi.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. The file cannot be registered."
I am at a loss. Does anyone have any suggestions
Hi,
When the user “User1” opens any shared resource in a W2008R2 Enterprise, the server CPU usage increase to 100%. The process affected is Kernel.exe with the 99% of CPU usage.
It occurs only sometimes and when User1 closes the shared resource, the CPU usage returns to normal values (about 1% or 2%).
It’s a problem with User1 or his Windows 7, the rest of the domain users works correctly.
User1 has all the privileges in the shared resource, equals the rest of domain users
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Hello,
I'm setting up a dfsr replication on 2 win 2K8 R2 servers.
I want to know what is the latest version of the DFSR Replication Service.
When i run a health report, i see my servers have 6.1.7601.17514 version.
Thanks,
I have folders with a quota which are replicated to other servers which have identical quotas. If a user fills their home directory DFSR triggers tons of emails every single time it touches the folder. How do I put a stop to this while still maintaining my email warning?
Email:
User NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM has exceeded the 100% quota threshold for the quota on D:\SharedFolders\HomeDrives\UserName on server FileServer02. The quota limit is 2048.00 MB, and 2048.00 MB currently is in use (100% of limit).
Server 2012 R2

Hi all,
I'm getting a really strange error when running the following sample code in powershell to add a replicated folder to an already existing replication group.
Both servers are virtual and running Server 2012 r2.
$GroupName = "FILES_SA" $FolderName = "DEPT_Share" $PrimaryComputer = "PrimaryServer.ad.domain.com" $SecondaryComputer = "SecondaryServer.ad.domain.com" $ContentPath = "M:\DEPT\SHARE" New-DfsReplicatedFolder -GroupName $GroupName -FolderName $FolderName Set-DfsrMembership -GroupName $GroupName -FolderName $FolderName -ComputerName $PrimaryComputer -ContentPath $ContentPath -PrimaryMember $true -Force Set-DfsrMembership -GroupName $GroupName -FolderName $FolderName -ComputerName $SecondaryComputer -ContentPath $ContentPath -PrimaryMember $false -Force
When it gets to the last command I get the following error:
Set-DfsrMembership : Could not edit the DFSR membership with domain: ; replication group: "FILES_SA"; replicated folder: "DEPT_Share"; computer: SecondaryServer.ad.domain.com; GUID: None specified. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect At C:\Users\username-admin\Desktop\Untitled2.ps1:9 char:1+ Set-DfsrMembership -GroupName $GroupName -FolderName $FolderName -ComputerName $ ...+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (DFSR membership...None specified.:String) [Set-DfsrMembership], DfsrException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : Set-DfsrMembership.OMException,Microsoft.DistributedFileSystemReplication.Commands.SetDfsrMembershipCommand
I have tried to run this command using dfsradmin and get the same error. Additionally using the GUI for this last stop results in the same error.
The only work-around I have found is to remove the replicated folder from the replication group and manually re-add it with the GUI (Specifying all the same paths.)
From what searching I've done everything says that the path has an illegal character in it, which it very clearly doesn't. I've also tried with other folder paths with the same result.
Any ideas?
Hello,
I have a weird DFS issue I am having trouble fixing. Currently users at one of our site uses 1 file server which has DFS namespace enabled but is not replicating however if the users map to it via IP or Namespace or UNC they are sometimes able to see the file and sometimes they just see the DFSRoot folder.
Any idea what could be causing this issue? The files aren't replicating and its the same location.
Thanks
Hi Guys,
Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2 has this new feature where it displays folders in which you have ownership of as "Documents" or "Start Menu" for Folder Redirection.
This only renames it when browsing it through Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). If you browse the folders through a command prompt using DIR, it will display the correct name... %username%.
I think Microsoft did this to make it more user friendly, but HOW DO I TURN IT OFF its annoying!
I wrote this program in visual basic that takes ownership of a folder, Grants Administrators, SYSTEM and %username% full control. It grabs %username% from the folder name as ususally with redirection the folder in which the data is redirected to = %username%. After setting the permissions correctly the program then gives ownership BACK to the user.
Anyway upon running my little application... look what explorer did. I had Ownership of the folder for a split second before the application gave ownership back. Because of this when I opened up the folder Explorer populated many of the folders as "Application Data" when they should be displayed as %username%.
Even though the user now has ownership of the folders now, it still displays them as Application Data! If I log into the file server as another user account, it displays them correctly. Explorer is caching this meta data under the users profile somewhere.
There is NO information on this on the internet. Can someone at Microsoft give me some information to turn this functionality of explorer.exe off or tell me where this meta data is stored so I can blow it away without having to re-create the entire profile?
Hi..
I have NAS box for my file storage and sharing. I need to configure one backup windows server which act as backup for the NAS box in case of failure. i need to sync files and folders between NAS and Windows Server on a scheduled time.
I have tried using Robo copy and Sync toy tool but did not find it efficient.
Need to know if there is any role in server or any other tool which can resolve my issue?
I wasn't sure which section to post this under as it occurs on different
operating Systems (Windows XP SP3, WIndows 7, Windows 8, Server 2003, Server
2008) and is random.
Basically, some of our end users experience problems accessing shares to a
vfiler for example with shortname \\example\share.
They can access this specific share via ip address or fqdn
\\example.domain.local\share. The
user can even access \\example and be
able to
view shares there but when clicking on the share it comes back with network
error or access denied.
This does not happen to all users at a time and on the same
workstations\servers and there are no specific times. On the end users
workstation DNS and wins is working, they have
no problems accessing other
vfilers or F&P Windows shares.
I tried all flushing DNS and wins cache, tried rebuilding CSC (Offline files)
to no avail. We don't have this enabled in our environment in any case
but
gave it a try.
One way I got it working via shortname is by adding a new security group to
the security permissions on the share. The group only had my account as a
member
and exsiting groups remained. After this the end user was able to map
via shortname.
I've tried many things and just can't figure this out or where to look. My
team doesn't manage the vfilers or samba shares so
can't look at the logs or
anything.
Another scenarion I have is for a Samba share, very similar situation but
this time its accessing the share on a Windows 2008 R2 server.
Basically
similar symptoms, can't access via shortname, get 'Network Error', tried several
things, even Windows Network Diagnostic
where it states that "The remote
device or resource won't accept the connection', "The device or resource (samba)
is not setup to accept connection
on port "The File and printer sharing
(SMB)". Port 139 is open, can access other shares on different storage devices
successfully.
What's weird is that after some time, An hour, 2 or 3 later functionality
returns without any changes. Obviously restarting the server resolved this
quicker.
There are no scheduled tasks or tasks running in the background,
Windows firewall is disabled, disabled AV etc.
I managed to get a log from this Samba device but not sure if its
related or not.
[root@samba] [09:30:52] /var/log/samba
# tail /var/adm/messages
Apr
3 08:33:06 samba adbindd[24524]: [ID 323999 auth.error] ERROR samba.adbindd2

Apr 3
09:10:07 samba adbindd[24524]: [ID 323999 auth.error] ERROR samba.adbindd2 Task
exit with cims error: Error sending response: Broken pipe
Only other thing I can think of is that is may have something to do with the
device, folder redirection, cache or something of that sort.
I'm stuck, anyone have any ideas. I would like to know what else to try if
the issue re-coccurs.

Hello,
Im new in working with file clusters...
What is the difference between a share folder created in the cluster manager and File Share Resource.
File share resource: File server (role) -> Right click -> Add Resource -> More Resources -> File Share
File Share: Add file share -> SMB Share -> Create share
Both a clustered.
Thank you
Good Morning guys
I have very serious problem in a user roaming profile.
I have redirection policy for users' desktop and documents.
I deleted the local copy of one profile and made the user to log in, but the surprise that an old version was loaded and he missed files for the last 3 months.
I changed the profile security at the server to discover the profile files and they were really for more that 3 months.
It's clear that the the profile was not updated from the local profile to the Server for this period.
Is there any chance to recover the new files ???
Hi,
First of all, I would like to start from beginning. I installed File Server Resource Manager in our Windows Server 2008 R2. We were especially using it for Quota Management. And we aren't using C drive but instead F drive (different volume) for quota management.
Suddenly one day, it stopped working therefore, I assumed that maybe if I restart it would have worked but unlike Linux which usually works, it didn't work. Now I can't get my File Server Resource Manager to start. The error which I get can be seen below:-
File Server Resource Manager Service error: Unexpected error.
Operation:
Checking the File Server Resource Manager global configuration store.
Starting File Server Resource Manager Service.
Error-specific details:
Error: CGlobalStoreManager::Install(), 0x80070005, Access is denied.
I did some research and there were very limited results but none of them worked.
I tried going into System Volume Information on both C drive and F drive. I tried going insideSRM folder removing quota.xml and readding but to no avail. Finally, I removed theFile Server Role and reinstalled but it didn't really work. I still have the same problem.
