Command to share a folder with hyphens

$

I need to share a folder via cmd for use in a batch file hence the %computername% part. The file is %computername%-scan and is located in the root of c drive and will be shared with a share name of %computername% where %computername% is the pc's hostname to a local user which i used in administrator mode.

net share %computername%=c:\"%computername%-scan" /GRANT:scan,CHANGE

I used the above command to share it but it is not successful. However, if i remove the -scan from the filename and the command with the quote marks, the sharing works. Is there a special option for sharing a folder with symbols and characters?

File share effective permissions and "encrypt data access"

I create a file share and everything works fine. But when  open Server Manager \ File and Storage Services \ Shares and goto the properties of the file share \ settings and enable "Encrypt Data Access" I get access denied for the user when accessing the share.

When I uncheck the feature all works fine.

The user is  logged into the same AD as the file server and the client compputer is also in the same AD as the file server.

Please advise.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows 7 folder redirection not working

$

Hi,

I've got a Windows Server 2008 R2 environment and I'm trying to get folder redirection working on Windows 7 clients. I've configured the group policy on the DC and it's suppose to redirect the user desktop to a folder sitting on another server.

What I've discovered is that any files in that folder aren't being copied down and they aren't visible to the user. I can connect to the folder via its UNC path and when I run a gpresult the GPO is showing that it's applying.

Am I missing something? Shouldn't the files be copied down since I've redirected the desktop? Here are the settings I've used:

Share Permissions

Local Administrators: Owner

Domain Admins: Read/write

Everyone: Read

NTFS

Local Administrators: Full Control on This Folder, subfolders and files.

SYSTEM: Same as above.

Domain admin: Same as above.

Everyone: Traverse folder, execute file, list folder, read data, read attributes and read extended attributes to This Folder only.

GPO Settings:

Under User Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Folder Redirection -> Desktop

Setting is Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location.

Target folder location - Redirect to the following location

Root path: FQDN\Shared folder name

GPO is linked to the OU I want to test with and there is a user account in it.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Storage Spaces Tiers optimization - how to disable totally ?

$

Hello,

Is Storage Spaces tiering optimization happens automatically then Storage Spaces thinks it has to be done ?

In my server i have set "Storage Tiers Optimization" task in task scheduled run every Saturday 13:00 and if i look at tasks jobs history i see that it does so.

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-ScheduledTask -TaskName *Tier*  | Get-ScheduledTaskInfo

LastRunTime        : 2014-06-28 13:00:00
LastTaskResult     : 0
NextRunTime        : 2014-07-05 13:00:00
NumberOfMissedRuns : 0
TaskName           : Storage Tiers Optimization
TaskPath           : \Microsoft\Windows\Storage Tiers Management\
PSComputerName     :

But if i look at event viewer - Windows\Storage-Tiering\Admin log i see that beside Saturdays optimization jobs happens several times a week.

Why it happens ? How to stop it from happening ? It looks that if i make a lot of writes to it at night it starts to optimize.

Need to stop it because for unknown reason if DPM starts to backup VM from this server while tiers optimization running - VHD's for VMs gets read only.

Earlier Version Of Windows. (Apparently this is windows server 2003)

My boot.ini file shows me that my default OS is Windows Server 2003

My Boot.ini in c Drive says this.

Need help to move my unallocated space to my system partition

When trying to check the healthy state of my D partition in Disk Management, I find there is some unallocated space behind this partition. Moreover, comparing to create a new partition with the unallocated space, I think it is better to move it to my system partition. Therefore, do you know how to get that started? What are your steps for me to expand my system partition?

Server 2012 R2: Failover Cluster + Deduplication = Free Space Error

$

Hello all,

I have a three node Windows Server 2012 R2 Failover Cluster running Files Services. When I enable Deduplication on an existing disk (SAN presented) it dedupes the appropriate files but doesn't release the free space afterwards. It essentially uses double the space.

The issue is even more curious when viewing the capacity of the disk through Failover Cluster Manager as the free space includes the space saving. However when viewed through explorer it's at near capacity (the doubled amount). I have viewed the disk in Treesize which agrees with FCM and shows the lower size and the majority of files residing within the System Volume Information (as expected with Dedupe).

My issue is that the physical free space is near capacity and I can't find a way to rationalise it down to the FCM/Treesize reported capacity.

I have tried:

  • chkdsk
  • Maintenance Mode + chkdks
  • Defrag
  • Failed over the resource to another node
  • Run the Dedup_WeeklyScrubbing task
  • Run the Dedup_WeeklyGarbageCollection task
  • Run the Measure-DedupeFileMetadata cmd and the results align with FCM/Treesize

Unfortunately this issue seems a little inconsistent across our cluster as some of the disks have applied dedupe correctly and others have effectively doubled the space as discussed above. All of the disks are from the same arrays.

I'd welcome any advice on troubleshooting the issue and would be happy to provide any additional information required.

Thanks for reading!

Dear all,

I have the same problem (System writer in vssadmin not found) on a Windows 2012 R2 server I tried a lot of things to get the system writer back.

Is it safe to apply the 2807849 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2807849) patch on a Windows 2012 R2 server ?

Kind regards,

Robocopy - Failure to Copy Folders and Files with Access is Denied

$

Hey everyone,

I've got a odd one to ask...I'm moving users' home drives from an old EMC NAS that's out of support and that emulated Windows Shares with CIFS.  The users were created with a script that created the shares on their behalf and gave them admin permission to the share.  Here's part of the script and as you see it uses CACLS to modify the permissions on the NTFS side (I think this might have caused the problem).

REM     Assign "Full Control" permission for user to home directory
REM     Must use CACLS for NTFS partitions
echo ----------------------------------------
echo Assigning proper permissions to %1's directory
cacls
\\serverUNC\User$\user\%1 /e /g %1:c
cacls
\\serverUNC\User$\user\%1 /e /g "support":c
cacls
\\serverUNC\User$\user\%1 /e /g "Domain Admins":f
cacls
\\serverUNC\User$\user\%1 /E /R EVERYONE
pause

I'm moving to a new SAN that is also emulated CIFS from IBM.
Robocopy is the tool.
There's about 1TB of data to move and it's failing like crazy.  Only 34GB of data will move.
The rest states "Access is Denied" even if I'm the owner and have full rights on a file/folder from the original location, it will not copy.

Even though I'm on the security with full rights and ownership, I can't copy it with the Robocopy (or XCopy) tools...granted some stuff does move, again, most doesn't and fails with Access is Denied.

A lot of the one's that fail to copy also have unknow SIDs in the Security and in some cases, I'm also prompted while looking at the security that "The permissions on subdirectory_name are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. Press OK to continue and sort the permissions correctly, or Cancel to reset the Permissions. "

MS and Google point to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322293 for help.
Problem with that is again...these are emulated CIFS and I can't logon or apply "hotfixes" of the like to a non-Windows system such as these.

Does anyone know where I might try starting to look for help with this and is this really a problem that came from using CACLS to apply NTFS permissions?
If not...do you know why I might be seeing this?

Thanks a ton in advance!!!

EMC NAS - Win 2008R2 and 2012R2

$

Hi,

I am using an EMC Isilon (NAS - SMB 2.1) with both OS Windows 2008R2 and 2012R2.

When a file is being written to a shared drive from 2008R2 and someone needs to read it, 2008R2 hangs for ~60 seconds until it can be readable, but 2012R2 is practically instant.

If the file is being written to the shared drive from 2012R2, all read of this file from 2008R2 and 2012R2 are instant.

I tried few things seen in forums everywhere:

- Disable Oplock on Windows 2008R2 or Storage (Performance is decreased when doing so)

- Disable TCP Offload - Didn't do anything.

What i don't understand and need help in, is to know why 2012R2 out of the box works perfectly fine and 2008R2 has issues and what can i do to improve 2008R2?

I need to continue supporting my clients that own 2008R2, so any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Cannot remove "Owner" in "Advanced Security Settings for "

I set myself as the "Owner" for a specific directory using File Explorer by right-clicking on the directory, choosing "Properties", clicking on the "Security" tab, clicking on "Advanced" and clicking on "Change" next to "Owner" in "Advanced Security Settings for <DIRECTORY>" (when there was none at the time). Now, I cannot remove myself or anyone else as the "Owner", since there is no option to remove someone entirely. Would it be possible to use PowerShell to make the "Owner" blank? Thank you.

DFS Replication stops, Debug Log: InitializeFileTransferAsyncState::ProcessIoCompletion Failed, The requested resource is in use

I've had 2 DFSR servers replicating for about 12 months now with no issue, with in the last week one server has stopped replicating some files, ie will have a directory with 30 jpg files on server a, server b will only receive 15 of the files.

in the DFSR log i just see this log repeated over and over again for all the different files it wont replicate

20140705 18:03:16.674 4072 SRTR  2344 [WARN] InitializeFileTransferAsyncState::ProcessIoCompletion Failed connId:{20AEF2C3-92EC-41B2-A161-D26B164F2A73} rdc:1 uid:{75E65307-2678-4C2B-B808-0C321E8D4383}-v7123 gsvn:{75E65307-2678-4C2B-B808-0C321E8D4383}-v7127 Error:[Error:170(0xaa) InitializeFileTransferAsyncState::ProcessIoCompletion servertransport.cpp:2235 4072 W The requested resource is in use.] completion:0 ptr:000000000D411160

i've tried everything i can think from disabling the AV to completely deleting this folder from the namespace, copying all the files to a new hard disk and starting again with a new folder in the namespace, but i still receive the same error.

All other folders replicating from this server are still working and replicating correctly

ISCSI traffic between client and server

Hello

How much traffic will there be between a server and a client when using iscsi. I'm thinking of create a hyper-v cluster, using only 1gb nic. All storage will be provided by iscsi.

I have an idea that there would not be much real data traffic, as all disk activities will be 'rendered' on the iscsi server(s) ?

Directory copy with all access rights (ACL, ACE)

Hallo,

I would like to copy a complete directory path (NTFS) to another partition.

1. How can I do this by conserving the ACL (with all ACEs) at the destination path?

2. I'm looking for a tool, which is able to write the ACL, ACE from a directory structure to a plain text-file or an excel-file.  Where can I find such a tool?

I think that is quiet simple but until now, I cannot find the solution.

Thank you very much indeed!!!

Migrating Data

Hi,

I have a project to replace a small network. The existing network is running Windows 2008 DCs and new project will consist of setting up new DCs running Windows 2012 R2 but the domain will be new. Therefore I need setup new AD accounts, probably CSV import, but I am unsure how I can best migrate the user and shared data from the existing file server to the new one.

I would like to hear from anyone that has done something similar for any ideas or tools which I can use
