SMB Locking in 2008

I'm having an issue with an app who's files are hosted on a 2008R2 fileserver. The app is running slow at times. I wiresharked and saw lock requests from clients. What kind of locks are these and can we stop them from being requested? Are they Oplocks (or Lease as it might be termed in SMB2). The workstations are Windows 7.

Unknown error? Winodws Search?

I think these are related to Window Search but I am not sure. They were in a file called VOLSHEXT.LOG. I searched the internet could not find anything and also no entries in the Event-log. Could someone at Microsoft let me know what this error is?

DFS-r Seeming to Select Incorrect Primary Member

Hello,

So I'm having a strange issue here.  I'm trying to set up a replication group between two sites (Denver and LA) with little success.  I've tried setting up a test replication group between these two members with a directory structure that is very simple.  Shared folder is called Test, RG is called DFSTest.  When I set the primary member as the correct server (Denver) within the test group, the files replicate to LA as they should and new files that are added/deleted are syncing as expected.

The reason for setting this up is to get a large volume of files, approximately 1.5tb over 13m files to LA from Denver.  We've done this in reverse recently, I set up the RG to replicate from LA to Denver so that we could rebuild and the LA box, which was completed.  The LA box is currently Win2k8 R2, and the hope is to replicate the dataset back from Denver so we can upgrade that box as well (Currently Win2k3).  Both of these boxes were in a namespace serving content, so now Denver is doing all of that while LA sits out of commission with no data on it.

The issue is here: When I set up the replication group, I select Denver as the primary member, as the content we're trying to replicate sits on that box.  Whenever I do this, it seems that LA is taking the role, deleting some files on the Denver server (which is in production, so this can't happen) so every time I do this, I replace the deleted files and try again.  The folder structure never gets created on the LA box as it should, and the replicated folder remains empty.  I've tried several times without any progress.

Could anyone offer any insight on what's going on here?

Thanks!

iSCSI with 2 Servers (Same LUN)

Current Setup:

  • dc1.domain.com and dc2.domain.com
  • FreeNAS configured with a LUN on a SAN
  • File & Storage Services Installed on both DCs
  • I have the FreeNAS connected to dc1 as a local disk.

My question is how can I have the same disk connected to both servers so that they are sharing the same LUN/data without doing a folder share?

Do I have to create a Storage Pool or a New iSCSI Virtual Disk?

Running SubInACL after Robocopy in Destination CIFS share ?

$

Hi All,

Can someone please assist me as to why I got millions of Error 5 - Access Deniedwhen trying to copy the NTFS drive onto CIFS share using the following Robocopy script in Windows Server 2003 ?

robocopy.exe S: "\\CIFS\FILESHARE\ " *.* /xd "S:\System Volume Information" /xd F:\RECYCLER\ /e /r:0 /w:0 /xo /zb /copy:DTS /fp /nfl /ndl /np /tee /log:"X:\Temp\robocopy.log"

In the source Windows Server 2003, I connect using RDP into the server with the service account that is member of SERVER\Administrators (Local Administrator), this service account (DOMAIN\Service-EnterpriseVault) is also granted full access in the destination CIFS share.

From the root drive on the NTFS drive S: I can see that the owner is SERVERname\Administrators, but how come I cannot copy millions of directory and files into the CIFS share ? and some of the folder I cannot browse through while I can browse it on the source file server.

Do I have to execute the following script on the old Windows Server 2003 source server after the first copy finished?

subinacl.exe /subdirectories \\CIFS\FILESHARE\*.* /grant=Administrators=F /setowner=Administrators >> X:\Temp\SetInACL.log

and then run again the same Robocopy command.

Any kind of help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Sharing Breaks After Migrating Data Using ROBOCOPY

$

I am using ROBOCOPY (run from the 2008 R2 server) to migrate data from a Windows 2003 clustered array to a Windows 2008 R2 clustered array and am experiencing sharing issues at the new location.

Command Line: robocopy "\\NAS1W2003\Folder1" "\\NAS2W2008\Folder1" /S /E /PURGE /COPY:DATSOU /DCOPY:T /LOG+:"D:\RoboCopyLogs\Robocopy.log" /TEE /R:5 /W:0

If I create a new folder under the root of the new drive, sharing works correctly on it, along with applying sharing specifically to any sub-folders. However, anytime I move data with ROBOCOPY, as defined in the command above, and I share the parent folder, ALL sub-folders show up shared as indicated by the Share Status at the bottom of the explorer window, but do not show up shared in properties. Also, when I click on the Share tab, the property window freezes for awhile before showing the Share tab. Any attempt to alter sharing on these sub-folders is futile, even if I create a new sub-folder under the parent folder. Security is copyied correctly and sharing works fine on the copied parent folder, but is disfunttional on all sub-folders.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the behavior. Thanks for your input.

Hi All,

My .bkf file corrupted due to power failure, and now i bought SysTools BKF Repair to retrieve the data from .bkf files. Theare are a few catalogs, say Catalog 1 and Catalog 2, in the corrupted .bkf files, and for some unknown reason the SysTools always loads the same catalog (Catalog 1), but really i want to load Catalog 2, so i deleted the Catalog 1 in the corrupted .bkf file, however SysTools is still loading up Catalog 1 even i deleted it in the .bkf file.

I am trying to figure out why RSS is not enabled for SMB3 on a Windows 2012 R2 server with Intel i350-T2 nic cards using Intel drivers 12.11.97.0.

Ethernet 4 is connected to a 1GB switch,  the card is show to have RSS enabled

Get-NetAdapterRSS :

Name                                            : Ethernet 4

Yet both Get-SMB server/clientNetworkInterface command show RSS as false ?

PS C:\Users\ncote> Get-SmbServerNetworkInterface | Select-Object -Property *

CimClass              : ROOT/Microsoft/Windows/SMB:MSFT_SmbServerNetworkInterface
CimInstanceProperties : {FriendlyName, InterfaceIndex, IpAddress, LinkSpeed...}

I have no idea why the SMB3 layer is showing RSS as false or how to enabled it.

System details :

hardware Dell T7500 workstation with dual x5650 xeon cpu's 96GB of ram, Nics : Intel i350-T2, disabled Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx, DLink DFE-530TX and some  vmware virtual adapters.

When multiple large GB files are copied to the server via SMB or when I run Iperf  with parallel sessions  only one CPU core shows close to 90% usage.  the PerfmonPer Processor Network Activity / Interrupt Cycles/sec only show activity on 1 cpu core instance 12.

Deleting offline folder cache

Hello All,

I need expert advice on the following;  We need to delete the offline folder cache on the windows 7 clients for over a 100+ users in our environment.

Let me describe the scenario -- All the users' "Home" folders are mapped manually on their AD account properties by the server path like \\servername\sharename\userfoldername.  We recently implemented a new DFS server and want to migrate the users folder to point to the DFS namespace \\domain name\users\userfoldername.  But when we change the users' home folder path to DFS namespace the offline folder cache is not working at all.  We need to delete the offline folder cache completely and then change the folder path to DFS namespace and then re-initialize the offline folder cache.  We have tried the regedit method as per the microsoft KB and deleting the offline cache manually but that was of no help.  Kindly suggest a good way to accomplish this;

Thank You

Windows 2008 R2 System Volume Information too large

Hello,

My System Volume Information folder on my Win 2008 R2 is over 300GB, total partition size is 3.7 TB. I'm using this partition to store third party backup software files. maybe a 100 files, that is all what this drive has. When I tried to delete some older System Volume Information files, nothing happens. I do not get permission denied or anything!! How can I reduce the size of this folder? Shadow copies is disabled on all partitions.

Storage Space and Mirrored Drive

$

Sorry if I'm adding more to clutter to the Storage Spaces conversation, but I can't seem to find an answer to an issue I have.

While doing an inital test of Storage Spaces, I did the following:

  1. With two 3TB HDs, created a mirrored pool with a max size VHD (2.73TB)
  2. Added a single 2TB drive to the pool (1.82TB)
  3. Extended the VHD for a total of (3.64TB = 2.73 + half of 1.82)

Now, this makes sense to me and was what I assumed should happen. With this test done, I went and tried to do my final setup:

  1. Using two 3TB HDs, created a mirrored pool with a max size VHD
  2. Copied 3TB of data from a third 3TB HD onto the VHD
  3. Wiped the third 3TB HD
  4. Added the third 3TB drive to the pool
  5. Tried to extend the VHD, but everything was grayed out and VHD remained at 2.73TB

So what happened? Why did this not behave like before (ie, the VHD be extended to approx 4TB = 2.73 + half of 2.73), which is what I wanted. I'm trying to add the third drive so that I have space to copy more data into the pool from a fourth 3TB HD (which I also intend to add to the pool for a total of 6TB with 4 mirrored HDs). Now I'm confused as to what will happen if go ahead and add the fourth 3TB drive (after backing up the data elsewhere). Will this get me to my desired end result (6TB with 4 mirrored HDs) or will this only get me a 2.73TB VHD mirrored across 4 HDs?

I'm at work now and forgot how many columns were in the orignal pool setup. Will I need to rebuild this whole thing and use powershell instead to set the number of columns correctly (I assume it needs to be forced into 2 columns). Can anyone clarify what I need to do for me to get my desired result before I have to waste another day backing up data to rebuild this?

Cannot add multiple file screens on a specific path

I have a situation where the limitation of adding a single file screen to a specified path just doesn't work.

Using Windows Server 2008 R2 64Bit

We don't allow users to store things like images, video and audio on any server and we want to be notified whenever someone attempts to do so.

To that end we setup the email notification and it works great.

The problem is that now, we get a notification for some file types where we don't want notification, but because you can only setup a single file screen for a specific path, the notifications are sent, in the hundreds most of the time.

What I really need is the ability to create a file screen for images, videos, audio and executable files that will send notification to the person responsible for ensuring users do not violate the usage policy, and a separate file screen for other files that we have restricted because they simply create clutter and for the most part are automatically generated by the OS when the user logs into the domain ... things like desktop.ini and thumbs.db files. For these files, I do not wish to receive notification because it isn't really a violation of the computer use policy so much as it is a restriction put in place to prevent unfettered clutter from filling the limited space we allocate for users.

Is there a solution that can be instituted that can make this happen?

How to prevent creation of My * folders on Home drive

$

First a little background. Our enterprise (some 11,000+ computers) utilize Active Directory to manage user logons and credentials. Every user has a home drive mapped to one of our many servers as part of their Active Directory profile. As a matter of policy, users are prohibited from storing images, videos and audio on any of the servers. These files instead may be located on the users workstation.

More to the point now.

All of the home drives are proliferated with numerous My Music, My Pictures and My Video folders, all of which are empty and unused. If it were not for the fact that these folders turn up not only in the root of the home folder, but also in the My Documents folder and even in sub folders deep within the file structure, we would not be concerned. Deleting these empty folders does no good as they are immediately recreated when the user logs in again.

Is there a way to prevent the creation of these folders in the home drive?

Domain User Cannot Access "My Documents" Subfolder

Hello, I have a users who uses a Windows 7 PC and a Windows 8 Laptop. The user is joined to a Domain and can access the "My Documents" folder and sub folders without an issue on the Windows 7 PC. When the user logs in with the same credentials on the Windows 8 Laptop the user can go into the "My documents" folder but 2/10 of the subfolders the user gets a message "You do not have permission to access \\XXXXX\share\user\My Documents\subfolder" of course I changed a few of the names for security reasons. I checked the parent directory "My Documents" security permissions and the user has Ownership of the folder as well as "Full Control." The Folder permissions are also applied to all subfolders and files. The setting in group policy to create the "My Documents" folder is \\Domain\share\%USERNAME% so that shouldn't be an issue.

I have also tried:

Disable this setting and check the results after a reboot

Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares

Any help to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

When trying to check the healthy state of my D partition in Disk Management, I find there is some unallocated space behind this partition. Moreover, comparing to create a new partition with the unallocated space, I think it is better to move it to my system partition. Therefore, do you know how to get that started? What are your steps for me to expand my system partition?

Help please! This is for a Windows 8.1 used as a Home Media Server, Every thing was working fine and one day when I turned on the Server I was unable to access the Storage Space, and windows was telling me I needed to Format the drive. at first I thought some thing was wrong with ether the motherboard or a hard drive died. If you need any more info please ask I need to get this fixed soon

Migrating from FRS to DFSR - Order?

$

We have a root domain, and a single child domain.

I want to migrate to DFSR, but I have a few questions:

1).  Will they both upgrade together, or must I do one then the other?  If the latter.. does it matter which is done first?

2).  Must I promote 2008 R2 DCs in ROOTDOMAIN and remove the 2003 ones prior to the DFSR migration?

ROOTDOMAIN - 2008R2 functional level

DC1 - Windows 2003

DC2 - Windows 2003

CHILDDOMAIN - 2008R2 Functional level

DC1 thru 7 - Windows 2008 R2

Hi
Is there any utility to apply 'Administrators' rights to user's roaming profile folder on Win2K3 server share without taking ownership and without affecting the user's existing permissions. I've already enabled the group policy (Add the Administrators security group to  roaming user profiles) for the same which is applicable only for newly created IDs. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Storage Spaces Tiers optimization - how to disable totally ?

$

Hello,

Is Storage Spaces tiering optimization happens automatically then Storage Spaces thinks it has to be done ?

In my server i have set "Storage Tiers Optimization" task in task scheduled run every Saturday 13:00 and if i look at tasks jobs history i see that it does so.

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-ScheduledTask -TaskName *Tier*  | Get-ScheduledTaskInfo

LastRunTime        : 2014-06-28 13:00:00
LastTaskResult     : 0
NextRunTime        : 2014-07-05 13:00:00
NumberOfMissedRuns : 0
TaskName           : Storage Tiers Optimization
TaskPath           : \Microsoft\Windows\Storage Tiers Management\
PSComputerName     :

But if i look at event viewer - Windows\Storage-Tiering\Admin log i see that beside Saturdays optimization jobs happens several times a week.

Why it happens ? How to stop it from happening ? It looks that if i make a lot of writes to it at night it starts to optimize.

Need to stop it because for unknown reason if DPM starts to backup VM from this server while tiers optimization running - VHD's for VMs gets read only.
