Windows Search Service indices on Server - When is it accessed from client?

I am playing around with the Windows Search Service on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials with some Windows 8.1 clients.

Under which circumstances is a search from a client accessing the file indices on the server (thus finding a file on a server share)? Does the share need to be mapped to a letter or is it e.g. sufficient to be logged into the domain?

Replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 files server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished

I am wanting to replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 file server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished.  For the moment I just need some "high level" guidance, little details can be worked out once I know which direction I will go.  I was considering that DFS might be a way to help get through the process although when finished the 2012R2 Files server will be by itself with no other file server planned at this time.  DFS can stay installed for maybe future purposes but clearly I wouldn't need the DFS Replication with only one machine.

Here's a few details of the environment....

1.  DC's are 2012R2 but it is still 2003 DFL because the old 2003 DCs are still present.  But likely they will be gone and the DFL elevated before I start on the File Server project

2. Nearly all machines in the facility have a shortcut on the "All Users" Desktop that points to the existing old File Server.  Editing or replacing that shortcut would be a major pain,...hence why I want to keep the same machine name at least, and maybe the same IP if not too much trouble.  This way the existing shortcut would continue to work with the new 2012R2 File Server.  The UNC path represented in that shortcut is also configured into one or more of our major business applications, futher emphasizing the need to keep the UNC path the same throughout the process.

3. The facility runs 24/7/365 but is "light" on weekends.  The political environment is such that there is little to no tolerance for any down time at all.

4. Would DFS (based from the 2012R2 machine) be a good tool to get where I need to go?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Which kind of permission will lost after re-build Windows OS

Dear professional guys :

I have to rebuild my File Server (Win2008R2) because of hardware issues.    But I am not sure which kind of permission will lost after re-build it.

This server only have 1 share folder named 'sharefile' and its share permission is simple (only domain user can read) but we had deployed its NTFS permission before.   I know we can backup its ntfs permission by icacls (it is really a great tool).  But I just confused which kind of permission will lost ??   Whether domain user permission will be kept as before ?

I don't think NTFS permission information was saved in OS, it seems saved in file/folder properties.

Do you have any good opinion ?

I searched many docs and books but really can't find any useful information.

Thanks in advance.

Dear All

i have to create a sharefolder on the network

i have a domain controller with AD

and a file server

so i create a folder , share it on my fileserver

then in AD i create a sharefolder and gave the path that i created in my fileserver.

but i would like to manage the access to that sharefolder from my AD

on the properties on the sharefolder in AD  i only have  general and managed by

i can set the user who can manage it but i tried to set a user who can manage the folder.

i would like to let all the users of my OU to access that sharefolder cause i have created that sharefolder in the specific OU.

when i log with a user that does no belong to the OU where i create the sharefolder he can access the sharefolder

normally i should have a security tab in the properties of that sharefolder to manage the permission i dont have it

can someone explain please?

thanks

How is this even possible? Folders out of sync. Backlog command says in sync.

Two 2008 R2 servers.  Been running DFS-R for about a year now.  Generally no problems.

If I run the DFSRdiag backlog command on either server, for one particular folder, it says there is no backlog.  The only problem with that is;  on one server there are 11 files in that folder, on the other server, in the same folder, there are 15 files.  How is this even possible!

Why DFSR primary server is still on "Uninitialized" status?

Hi,

I created a DFSR replication group and my primary server is still on "Uninitialized" status after 2 days. The second server (member) in in "Waiting for initial replication" status.

There are just 2 server in the replication group:

Server01 (Windows 2008 R2): replicate Folder01 of 300 GB and is the primary
Server02 (Windows 2008 R2): member server, waiting the replication

I check in server logs and there is no error. On all DCs I see the replication group in ADESIEDIT.

When I create a health report I can see for Server02:

300000 Backlogged Sending Transactions
310000 Backlogged Receiving Transactions

Server02 already contains a part of Server01 because replication group is recreated (Was deleted and recreated).
So I expect that replication goes faster and Server01 just update Server02 with new files or more recent files.

There are my questions:

1- Why it takes so long time for the primary to initialized the files and start replication? Is that normal?

2- Why so much backlogged shows on the report? Both servers should just replicate the delta no?:

300000 Backlogged Sending Transactions
310000 Backlogged Receiving Transactions

Where is the "File Service Resource Manager" hidden in Windows 2012R2 Essentials?

Hi All,

I am running an W2012R2 Essentials VM as AD and file server. And I want to add/change certain quota templates. This should be done via the FSRM role in MMC. The FSRM role/feature is installed and running. However, there is no entry labeled "File Storage Resource Manager" under Server Manager/Tools.  Neither is there a FSRM addon that can be loaded into MMC. What am I doing wrong?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Users quota- not sending email windows 2008 server r2

I have setup quotas in File Server Resources Manager, when I test sending emails, it works ok I get email  from FSRM, but users doesn't get email when they reach quota even when they are on 100%. When I check Source Template Limit for each user I can see that system sends email, but users not getting any email.

All users have email set in User Properties in AD.

What can be wrong?

I never left an open problem....I search, dig and ask, until it's solved....

WS2012: DFSR Health Report not working with static RPC port

$

Hallo everybody,

I've configured DFSR replication between a Windows Server 2008 and a Windows Server 2012 to a static RPC port following this guide:  http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2009/07/16/configuring-dfsr-to-a-static-port-the-rest-of-the-story.aspx
The servers are located in different network segments divided by a firewall. I opened port 55555 for DFS replication.

The replication itself works fine and the health report (-> DFS Management -> Create Diagnostic Report ) reports no errors for the w2k8 box. But the same report says "Cannot retrieve report. The RPC server is unavailable" for the w2k12 box.
While the report is generated I can see with a packet sniffer that packets send to random high ports are blocked by the firewall. This doesn't happen for the w2k8 box and shouldn't happen when the RPC port used for DFSR ist configured to 55555 (static).  It's somewhat irritating, that the health report shows errors while DFS replication is working fine.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Kind Regards
Christoph

Scale-Out File Server Interleave Size

$

I have a Hyper-V host machine connected to a two-node Scale-Out File Server.

I'm playing around with the Interleave size when creating the Storage Spaces.  Any suggestions for Interleave sizes?  I know the default is 256KB, but I'm wondering if increasing the interleave size (and thus the stripe size) would improve performance for Hyper-V VM performance, especially write performance.  With many of our file servers running as VMs, I'm focused on getting the best file transfer performance as possible from a client to a file server VM.

Thanks.

Extremely weird file share issue

We are having a very weird issue when trying to access file shares from a remote site. If we use the UNC path (\\servername\sharename\folder) we never have the problem.   Also, if we go to the drive letter and click through the folders, we don't experience the problem.

The problem only arises when pasting the absolute path into windows explorer (ex. L:\foldername\foldername). Once we do that, it hangs for a second and then sends you back to the initial share, and the path in explorer shows <drive letter>\.\.\ (ex. L:\.\.)

As the jpg attached shows. For security rules,  I had to block the share name /server name

I have never seen an issue like this. It only happens from 2 remote offices. Other remote offices are fine

This warning occurred in several seconds after the Windows Server Backup start. Our backup job finishes successfully. That server is in provisioning without a heavy workload, and we have not experienced any problem yet. But we do not want to face any problems due to this error in the production environment.
All disks of the server are managed by the LSI MegaRAID controller, which doesn’t report any errors in the disk system.

it is Windows Server 2012 with the latest updates.

"Failed to set access paths" when trying to mount a partition

$

I have a newly formatted drive (GPT, NTFS, 64k). When I try to mount it to a folder, I get the error "Failed to set access paths. Failed to add or remove access paths. Invalid Parameter". I have previously mounted drives on this server and they are working fine. I've tried 2 new drives and neither will mount. I have tried in the "Manage Drive Letter and Access Paths" under File and Storage Services. I've also tried the old Disk Management tool and PowerShell.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this issue?

Design Centralize File Service

Hi All,

We have 6 Branch office locations and a centralized Datacenter and DR Site.   File Services which are currently residing in Branch office locations, need to be centralized.

I like to setup all the users Home Folders and Redirected Folders ( Desktop/MyDocs) to  Production Datacenter and then replicate to DR?

Is  this good idea or what is the recommended or best practice?

I need to remove all the site Backup servers/Tapes/and Offsite storage contract /backup software..

Also i like to have a one MAP drive to access business data in anywhere is these offices.

Again solution must be robust and no disruptions to the business.

You can ask me for any further clarifications on this.

Robocopy - exclude destination files from /MIR

$

Attempting to do a nightly run of robocopy while we transfer over to a new file server. We've a load of extra files with an offline attribute on the destination, which are files archived by Enterprise Vault which we moved in advance, and so these must not be touched.

If I do robocopy source destination /MIR /XA:O, all these files still get deleted. Shouldn't the exclude switch apply to files on the destination as well as the source?
