DFS across domains

$

We are currently setting up DFS within a multi company organisation across different sites. On the main site we have a main DFS hosting all the primary domain namespaces which replicates all its data to a Master DFS where we capture the backups. The other remote sites that are on the primary domain will have a local DFS hosting only the data they need from the main DFS.

We also have a number of sites who will be running their own child domains which we need to setup DFS for. The data needs to be available locally as well as at the main site and we need to be able to replicate the data to the Master DFS for backup.

Is it possible to setup a namespace with namespace servers in more than one domain, i.e. parent and child domain?

Is it possible to setup a replication group between child and parent domains?

Is it going to be easier for me just to setup primary domain DFS on the child domain sites & make good use of security groups and GPO's to get the users connected?

All servers are running 2012R2

WorkFolders Windows 10

Hello,

I´m currently testing out WorkFolders for Windows 10(Official release) but I´m unable to get this working.
There is no problem with Windows 8.1

Error message: (Sync Stopped. Can´t encrypt files) To continue synchronising, close any open Files or application...

Work Folders detected a sync error. Check partnership status, network connectivity, and disk space. EventID 9002

Sync failed. Work Folders path: C:\Users\MYUSER\Work Folders; Error: (0x80c80314) The Work Folders path has to be encrypted. You might have an application holding the Work Folders folder open or the folder might be compressed. Close File Explorer and any open files or apps, and check the folder's Advanced properties to ensure that the folder is not compressed. EventID 2100

Client is running with Windows Defender(SCEP) and I cant see any application that would cause this issue.

How can I pinpoint this problem and is there someone that have had the same issue?

How to convert ReFS disk to NTFS?

When I created my file server, apperantly I have created ReFS instead of NTFS. Which is bad for my DFS replication. As you all know for sure, I cannot create replication between these machines because the replication can occur only on NTFS. I tried to search the forum but no joy for me. I accept any kind of ideas.

Best Regards!

Hello all!

I am having trouble regarding these two sysvols. I cannot delete them and also I cannot remove the DFS. There is an error says that I need to remove the server from all replications. And this is the magic circle. I can't remove the replications and I can't remove the feature. Any ideas? :(

I am trying to upload a picture of the DFS management for couple of days but from technet refuse to verify my account for some LONG reason -.-

How to keep File Server Folder Permission Not to change after fresh OS installation

Hi There,

I have an issue with file server migration.

I have my file server running with Windows2012 Standard Evaluation version which has a D drive capacity of 1TB consisting of many folder which have been applied with many security group permissions.

As prescribed in windows server we can not update the licence key of member server from evaluation to Retail.

Now i'm planning to uninstall the evaluation OS and to make fresh install with WIN2012 STD R2.

So my question is how do i preserver all the folder permission after fresh installation or else is there any other way to proceed with standard evaluation version to standard R2 version without loosing any file server folder permissions.

Users Impact during the activity is - 1000

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Robocopy and NTFS Permissions

$

Maybe I am asking the impossible. I have two file servers; the source and destination server. Another Admin copied (didn't use robocopy) a Folder with all it's subdirectories from source to destination.

Now I have been asked to robocopy all the permissions from the source folder to the destination folder without making any changes to the destination files (now live data)

I can do this using  /mir /secfix /sec but it removed any new files on the destination folder. Not good because we don't know what files/dir have been changed.

I have tried several options and the log will show the file/folder with fix beside it but permissions don't copy over.

/secfix /copyall

Is this because the destination file wasn't move by robocopy?

Thanks!

Want to test using Work Folders with data on NAS?

Hi, I'm from the Work Folders team in Microsoft. In discussions with customers, I've learnt that some people want to keep their user data on the NAS devices.

We'd like to validate some design thinking on supporting this scenario. If you are interested, please ping me offline at jianyan at microsoft to engage.

Thank!

Replace Dead Raid-5 Disk

Good day everyone,

a drive in my Raid-5 array has bitten the dust. I use Microsoft Software Raid-5 (Windows Server 2008 R2), and now that I have returned the dead drive and procured a new one, I need to know how to add it into my array. In disk management, I see a "Missing Disk" row at the bottom of the table of drives. When I right-click on my volume, "Repair Volume" is grayed out.

My question to the fine professionals here on this forum, is how the heck do I turn my RAID back on? I tip my hat to the gentleman whom may solve this problem.

Thank you very much!

Is Shadow copies and DFSR working good together?

$

Hi!

I wondering about DFS-R and Volume Shadow copies. I have DFS-R folders to multiple different remote locations that all users access through a DFS-namespace. Will DFSR and VSC work together?

Some thoughts:

  • Is not DFS-R files a located in X:\System Volume Information? Will that cause problems?
  • The staging folder of DFSR is constantly changing so won't it cause VSC to constantly create and delete snapshots ?

Any thoughts? Anyone uses this design today?

Thanks!

FSR to DSFR

If I migrate my parent domain to DSFR, how then does the parent domain DC's replicate to the child domain DC's still using FSR? I understand it is a per domain setting, but how do they domain talk to each replication wise when one domain is FRS and one is DFSR?

Set approved/secure file type for anonymous users?

Windows 2008r2, IE9

I'm working on a farm that has 100+ anonymous users per node. Currently, when a user attempts to open a .pdf, they get a popup asking if they want to save or open a file. My client insists that this be turned off and set to "Open" by default. Attached screen grab.

Researching this issue, I found that setting the following registry key would fix this for explicit users:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute\0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046

AcroPDF.PDF

AcroPDF.PDF.1

I used a logon script to force these keys. Supposedly it only works for IE8 but on IE9 it works just as well. But only for explicit users.

Anonymous users still receive the attached screen grab. Do anonymous sessions in windows not get registry access? Is there another way to set .pdf files to open without the security pop-up?Open or Save

Event ID 55 - File system structure is corrupt and unusable

Hi,

We have started recieving this error on one of our Windows Server 2008 Std 64bit servers. The primary role of this server is File Services which hosts a 1TB data volume (RDM) that we replicate between 2 other sites using DFSR.

This server is a VM hosted on EXSi4.1, the storage is a fiber attached HP EVA presented through the ESXi.

We are receiving the error message up to 100 timer per hour for this volume, I assume because DFSR is trying to write replicated files to the volume.

We have tried booting to recovery console and running chkdsk /R on the volume, but chkdsk does not detect any errors/bad sectors on the volume.

Have checked thing on the EX and storage side of things, eg; no disk errors reported on the EVA, LUN is only presented to this host. The only errors I see anywhere is the Event ID 55.

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume E:.

Is it sensible to use shadow copies (previous versions) with DFSR?

$

I have a 2012r2 server at the centre of a hub and spoke DFSR with 6 other servers.

I am considering implementing shadow copies to enable "previous versions" every couple of hours.

However there is clearly some degree of disk churn with the DFS, e.g the cacheing & confilct and deleted folders in the DFSR sub folders.

Is there any reason I shouldn't use shadow copies with DFSR?

DFS replication not working

$

Hello, I have a Windows 2008 R2 server in a DFS replication group with a Windows 2008 32bit server. replication has worked in the past but now its not replicating. There are no errors in any of the logs, when I run a diag it doesn't show any issues. It just wont replicate. Any ideas on what I could do?

I don't want to recreate the repl group as I'm not sure what's that's going to do with all the data that has not yet replicated.

2012 R2 Storage Spaces - Split a mirrored virtual disk and keep data

$

Hi

I have a storage pool containing 2x physical disks. I have created a mirrored virtual disk on top of those physical disks, occupying all the space.

I would like to split this pool/mirror back into 2 separate disks, but retain the data. So basically end up with 2 separate disks each containing a copy of the data.

Is this possible?

Thanks
