ROBOCOPY new user questions

$

Greetings,

When running robocopy I am experiencing the following. Can you correct/explain what is happening, please?

1. I get an extra directory under the total column and 1 skipped directory. Yet the number of files in total and copied columns are the same?. Note the number of bytes is also the same.

2. One of my directories appears to copy all but hangs up in some kind of a loop necessitating a restart of robocopy. I am never confident that the copy is ok. How can I identify the problem?

3. Options listed in the log are different than those specified.

robocopy "E:\mmarion.4" "D:\mmarion.4" /E /256 /NC /NFL /NS /NDL /NP /TEE

becomes

Options : *.* /256 /NS /NC /NDL /NFL /TEE /S /E /DCOPY:DA /COPY:DAT /NP /R:1000000 /W:30

Thank you. MM

Cluster shared volumes: thousands SCSI reservation errors on the storage system

$

We have four virtualization hosts running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter with Hyper-V role. Those servers are connected via FCoE links to an external storage system. Logical volumes on that storage system are designated as Cluster Storage Volumes and used to store files of highly available virtual machines. Often VMs stored on the same SCV run on different hosts.

We have some serious performance issues in the cluster including complete I/O freezes on some CSVs in specific scenarios. I'm working with a vendor's technical support engineer, and he's already informed that the system is completely healthy. However, analyzing the storage system performance logs, he discovered huge amount of SCSI persistent reservation errors (over 30 000 in 2 hours, i.e. more that 4 per second) on the LUs in question.

Is it normal? In 2012 R2, all Hyper-V hosts are able to access the same SCVs simultaneously, so it might explain the presence of such conflicts per se. However, I suspect that this number is too big.

Lost communications on a server pool

Hello all,

I just started with server pools.

I have 1 4T and 4 1T drives.

I have made a simple pool for the 4 1T drives to be added together.

I went and took out 1 of the drive (hot swap) and after putting it back in the Virtual drive was at 0 byes.

So I looked at the pools and noticed that the drive I pulled out and put back in has lost communications.

I have done a reboot to try to get it back online.

The drive is still good.

Did not find anything on lost communications on a simple layout.

I am looking for anyway to get this back into a health status.

Thanks Kurt

Storage Pool wrongly reporting not enough space to move files

Hi.

I am running a Windows Server 2016 machine with 4x 8TB and 2x 10TB drives in a storage pool.
While trying to move data from one virtual disk witch is a parity volume, over to another virtual disk witch is a simple volume, i get an error:
There is not enough space on xxxxx.

18,2GB is needed to move this item. Delete or move files so you have enough space
The virtual drive has 13,2TB free space both on the partition AND on the virtual drive.

There is 3,47TB available space on the pool.

HDD1 7,28TB - free space: 637GB

HDD2 7,28TB - free space: 727GB

HDD3 9,10TB - free space: 0,00B

HDD4 9,10TB - free space: 125GB

HDD5 7,28TB - free space: 612GB

HDD6 7,28TB - free space: 643GB

Why is HDD3 full, and why is it reporting that i do not have enough space to move files?
I have tried running "Optimize-StoragePool". I have also tried running SlabConsolidate, and with no success.

The health of all HDD's are good.

Storage Spaces Direct Dirty Count Greater Than Limit - Volume is Online

From reading on troubleshooting and a long support call the Storage Spaces Drt counters for a storage spaces direct volume are never supposed to be greater than the limit.  If the limit is breached then the volume is supposed to stay offline.  I have noticed that some volumes go offline when I reboot a cluster node after putting it into maintenance in failover cluster manager.  I haven't yet had an opportunity to try it yet, but there are a few commands to run.

Get-StorageFaultDomain -type StorageScaleUnit | Where-Object {$_.FriendlyName -eq "cl-hv03"} | Enable-StorageMaintenanceMode

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/4fc1fb86-61fa-4976-8b3f-9e314586fef8/storage-spaces-direct-cluster-virtual-disk-goes-offline-when-rebooting-a-node?forum=winserverClustering

I have KB4462928 installed on all the cluster nodes as well.

Where this really gets interesting is that I have a volume that is online with a dirty count greater than the limit, and I'm not sure how this is possible and if there is a way to clear the DRT backlog.  Even when nothing is writing to the volume, it stays above 270 when the limit is 255.

I'd post links and screen shots but my account hasn't been verified yet.

W2012R2 Storage Pool SSD-Tier Error (Lost Communication)

Hello all. I hope someone can help.

Our server (W2012R2) crashed. It has a Tiered storage pool with 2 x SSD and 2 x HDD.

On reboot after the crash, the storage pool went into read-only mode as both SSD in my storage pool failed with a "lost communication" error. The drives show up just fine in Disk Management. The drive SMART parameters are good.

It seems as if the pool and the drive has amnesia and forgot they were made for each other.

This is a production File Server and we urgently need it back up. Very much appreciate any assistance or leads provided.

Unfortunately I cannot post images until microsoft verifies my account.

-----

I've done the following to no avail (in the hope that I can at least access the data in the pool so I can copy the VM to another location and start it):

Get-StoragePool <PoolName> | Set-StoragePool -IsReadOnly $false

Get-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName "Disk Satu" | Get-Disk | Set-Disk -IsReadOnly $true

Get-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName "Disk Satu" | Get-Disk | Set-Disk -IsOffline $false

Repair-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName "Disk Satu"

-----

I've tried adding drives and it fails due to the pool being in an operational-state of read-only, even when the IsReadOnly flag is false.

I've considered forcefully retiring the SSD (one or both) but I am concerned this will destroy the integrity of the overall pool.

DFSR - Intial Sync over write

I have a replication pair that was working but is only working in one direction

I have users point to both folders.

I have a large back log.The server that isn't sending, is saying its still waiting for initial sync.

Can I configure one of these as the primary without risking the data being wiped during the initial sync.

Thanks,

Shared VHD Set on HyperConverged S2D Issue

$

Realized an issue lately with my cluster and it has to do with the shared vhd set. i had a guest cluster hosted on my hyperconverge solution. it seems that whenever i power on the guest nodes, the first node will always be ok.. the second node will hang and causes my entire s2d to freeze up.

did some checks and realised that my guest nodes and the csv owner are all in different hyperv servers. if i moved my guest nodes to the hyperv server that is also owner of the csv, there is no issue at all.

i read that shared vhd set uses redirect io to the coordinator node for csv. however, it does seems to pose some issue for me in my case above which freezes my entire s2d. Are there anyone who have the same set up as me whereby using s2d hyperconverge and utilizing shared vhd set for guest cluster as well? did you encounter the same behaviour as i am?

Or is there anything that i am missing that causes this to happen?

 Thanks,

Norman

File sharing cannot be accessed by DNS alias name

hi All,

just a weird case to ask.

In my domain environment, we created an alias DNS record (fs01) for pointing to a file server (real hostname: fileserver1, IP: 192.168.1.10). On a 08r2 member server, it can only access that file server by the real server name (\\fileserver1), not the alias DNS name (\\fs01))or the IP (\\192.168.1.10).

the server can ping the file server by hostname, alias and IP. the trace route result for the alias DNS record and the real file server name is identical.

the only error when accessing the DNS alias is 0x80004005.

anyone knows how to resolve the problem?

much thanks.

File share folder permissions

$

Hello,

I have a question regarding administrator permissions on folders and subfolders on shares.

I have folders structured like this:

root

  • Folder A
  • Folder A \ Folder A1
  • Folder A \ Folder A2
  • Folder B
  • Fodler B \ Folder B1
  • etc

I have AD user groups A and B, users in A should have full usage acces on folder A and subfolders (read/edit/create/delete files and subfolders). Likewise for B. I want users in the Administrator group to be able to change permissions on these folders without being able to view its contents. (e.g. add a group C to folder A and its subfolders) I tried granting Administrators all access to a folder except the checkbox "List Folder/Read Data" or"Traverse Folder/Execute File", but this only allowed the administrators to change the permissions on Folder A but not its subfolders.

Thank you very much,

Alex

File server Resource Manager

I am running server 2012 R2 and configuring FSRM in order to Archive data that has not been accessed in 547 days from the Y: to the X: but when I run the File Management Task it goes through the motions but nothing is Archived.  I am missing something.

Here is what I have configured for the File Management Task:

General Tab; gave task a name; checked Enable box; gave description.

Scope Tab; check mark in boxes Group files and User files; Y: is included in the scope.

Action Tab; Type = File expiration; Expiration directory X:\

Notification; 3 days before; e-mail

Report Tab; Logging check log file and error log file; Generate a report is checked with CSV; Delivery is checked to send to my email.  This part works because I do get the email report, it just has zeros for totals moved.

Condition Tab; I checked "Days since file was last accessed"  with 547 days

Schedule Tab; 1st of the Month

How can I generate a list with no file changes using Robocopy to show EXTRA and New files between two directories?

$

I want to do a file comparison between two directories and warn via email if file differences are found, either new or extra files.

I don't want to update the directories in any way, but get the list to a text file.

I use Robocopy already in powershell scripts so would love to know how to accomplish the above via PS script.

Or, if there is a way to do this in C# I could use that too.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

The Microsoft iSCSI Target Server service could not bind to network address

$

In  a new Windows 2012 R2 setup, we are seeing an issue where we cannot bind to the 10Gb card that is installed.  The server is a DL380 gen 8.   The onboard HP 1Gb NICs can successfully be bound to the ISCSI target service when configured.  The Intel(R) Ethernet Server Adapter X520-2 adapter does not.   Instead, we see the following error:

The Microsoft iSCSI Target Server service could not bind to network address X.X.X.X, port 3260. The operation failed with error code 10049. Ensure that no other application is using this port.

The workaround in https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/4431ba80-fc2a-49b1-99a6-1f3811c0aec3/my-windows-2012-iscsi-target-service-needs-to-be-restarted-every-time-the-server-starts?forum=winserver8gen is in place, but that does not correct the issue with the X520-2 adapter.   Latest drivers from intel have been installed for the X520-2.

Thoughts?

Audit file access from Server 2012 cluster

$

We have 2 x Virtual 2012 R2 servers in a failover cluster being access via a namespace

Eg

Namespace = fileserver

Server 1 Virtual = fileserverA

Server 2 Virtual = fileserverB

SAN Storage with RDM mappings to each host

users access the files from the server eg

\\filserver\IT\file.doc

I would like to audit the share IT for user file access

is this possible with a cluster environment, if so any details would be greatly appreciated.  I have looked at guides to turn on auditing, which I have completed, but I am not seeing any file access logs in eventviewer

Server 2019 S2D Nested Resiliency - Storage Pool Quorum

$

On this page - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/nested-resiliency - a scenario is detailed where a 2-node S2D cluster loses one entire node plus a disk on the second node. This results in 3 out of 8 of the clusters disks remaining online. The S2D quorum documentation - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/understand-quorum - still indicates that to maintain storage pool quorum a cluster must have 50% + 1 disks available (with the pool resource owner counting as a disk vote). This is definitely the case in Server 2016... was this changed in Server 2019 and not documented? How does Storage Pool Quorum work in S2D on Server 2019 that it allows this nested resiliency failure scenario?

Thank you.

S2D mixed with iSCSI SAN

$

Good morning,

We currently have a traditional Window  Server 2016 3-node Hyper-V Cluster with an iSCSI SAN. We are planning to purchase two additional nodes capable of support Storage Spaces Direct. We plan to storage migrate from the SAN to S2D. Can we add the two new nodes to the existing cluster, also giving them access to the SAN and then enable S2D on the two nodes? That would allow us to live migrate to the new servers in the cluster and then Storage migrate from the SAN to the S2D storage. We have taken a similar approach in the past with two SAN's,

Thanks

Linus
