I have a situation at one of our clients.

System spec.

Server 2012 R2 (DC and File server)

Users running windows 7 with office 2010 

Now if User1 opens a particular .xlsx file from the server (network share) it will give this error to User2 that user1 has the file open. (correct)

But now if User2 opens the file and user3 tries to open it, it give the error to user3 that the file is locked by user1... The same happens if user2 or user3 should have the file open, and user1 opens the file, it will give the error locked for editing by user1.

This is making no sense. If the file is open by any of the users it will inform the second user trying to open it, its locked by user1.

So we never know who has it open. 

I have checked for ghost excel running in task manager of any of the users, and nothing. I can see on the server that the file session has ended if someone close it, you can see the next user opening it (no hassles) but when a second person tries to open it wiles the file is active (in use) it tell them the file is locked by user1.

Please help on this weird situation.

I am currently having the issue where I cannot access shares on domain A from domain B. I am able to access shares on domain B from domain A. Both domains maintain separate Active Directories. When I get the prompt for credentials when I try to access the shares on domain A from domain B I get errors telling me that I have entered the wrong password and my account is locked out immediately.

The event ID's that I am getting are:

• 4625 Unknown user name or bad password.
  Status: 0xc000006a
  Sub status: 0xc000006a
• 4776
  Error Code: 0xc000006a
• 4776
  Error Code: 0xc0000234

The username and password that are being entered are correct.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apologies if this has been posted and I couldn't find it. I have a 2-way mirror with 2 x 2TB drives. I just added a third drive that is 4 TB. I can extend the storage out to the 4 GB capacity now, but is Storage Spaces going to mirror all of the 4 TB to the 2 x 2TB drives?

Been seeing this randomly on my file server and its becoming more common.

I am a member of the domain admins group and I log onto the server using domain admin credentials.

Try to open a folder - and I get "You don't currently have permissions to access this folder" - Continue or Cancel -

I go to properties > Security and it says "You must have read permissions to view the properties of this object" - I can continue and looking at effective access with my user account says I have permissions.

I am not sure why this is happening - I have tried to reset the owner to local admins and didn't make any different.

If my user account it set manually on a folder it is fine.  It is not enumerating any of the groups though and allow group membership access.

Any thoughts?

Can I uninstall and install the Role File Services and Storage again in an Active Directory 2012 R2 server?

I'm having an issue with our home drive. Not sure if this is how its suppose to work by design but I have a drive that shows our main shares using 130 GB's but the Dedup/ChunkStore/*.ddp/data is using 1.1TB

I've ran Get-DedupJob -GarbageCollection both Full and regular with no change. Is there something I'm missing?

We are having a problem understanding the licensing features of Essentials vs Standard for server 2012.

The only thing we need to know is how many computers on the LAN will be able to access the fileshare using SMB simultaneously. For instance, in Windows 7 professional 20 users can access files simultaneously.

How many computers on a LAN can access a fileshare simultaneously from Server 2012 Essentials?

Example:

C:\Share is a shared folder on the server.

There are x amount of pc's accessing this folder and files. They aren't using RDP or anything of that nature... just like typing \\[servername]\[share name]\filex

How many W7 computers would be able to do this simultaneously on essentials?

Occasionally, and for various reasons, we have to redo a DFS replication group.  But when we do this, the new replication group spits out the following errors:

The DFS Replication service stopped replication on replicated folder <foldername> at local path <filepath\foldername> due to Error ID: 9098 (A tombstoned content set deletion has been scheduled). Event ID: 4004

I've seen a few threads online about how to combat this problem.  Namely to stop DFS replication service, delete the System Volume Information\DFSR folder on the drive hosting the problematic DFS files, and then start the replication all over again. Aside from my itchiness in deleting protected system files like this, I also just can't delete this folder.  

Is there a supported way to get rid of this tombstoning issues and have DFS restart replication anew?  I'd really like to know.

Hi hope someone can help or give me some pointers as where to look.

these are windows 7 desktops, access DFS shares on server 2012R2.  redirected folders / desktop /documents etc.

Folder redirection works fine, initially, the user works no problems, then all of a sudden its totally random they loose write access to there Redirected folders, reading is totally fine.

Now accessing their redirected desktop for example, using UNC works fine they can read and write, its only when using the DFS path, they can read but not write. ???

I have gone over all the permissions with a fine tooth comb , even check the DFSROOT share perms.

The only way to fix this currently is to remove there profile, and delete the redirected folders, so they are all created again.

Then it all works fine.

This is totally random event, and affects random users.

any clues anybody would be greatly appreciated

Hello all.

I am in a bit of a conundrum as our Senior System Administrator left abruptly without any knowledge transfer, and with him left most of the knowledge of how our infrastructure is configured and setup.

Recently we noticed that our DFS replication has not been working correctly for a week or two.  It seems that all files that are put onto our downstream servers are replicating correctly up to our main SAN, however, files put onto the SAN are not replicating down to our site servers.  I verified this with a crude test:  creating a text file on our SAN and on a site server - the one created on the site server was present on the SAN within about a minute, while the file created on the SAN has not made its way down to the site server in over a day.

I looked at the event logs for DFSR and found event ID 5008 in particular keeps popping up:

The DFS Replication service failed to communicate with partner %SERVER% for replication group %Replication%. This error can occur if the host is unreachable, or if the DFS Replication service is not running on the server. 
 
Partner DNS Address: %SERVER%

The service will retry the connection periodically.

I've tried searching around a bit on this but couldn't find much useful info.  Already confirmed all RPC ports from source IP of the SAN to our facilities are unblocked.  And it was working about a month ago.

Any help, advice, or just simply pointing us in the right direction would be most helpful.

I am trying to set up some network shares and could use some help. My plan is to create the following directory structure:

D:\Shares$

Under the D:\Shares$ directory would be:

D:\Shares$\Users

D:\Shares$\Departments

D:\Shares$\Shared

D:\Shares$\Temp

The Users directory would hold %username% directories, each user having explicit access only to there folder

The Departments directory would hold Accounting, Technical, etc. and would need to be available to specific users

The Shared and Temp directories would be open to all users

I do not want users to be able to access or see the contents of other directories

I am having some difficulties with Diskpart on my Windows 2008 SP2 server. I have configured a number of Volumes which I intend to assign mount points too how ever when trying to get a the Volume Number and Label via Diskpart > List Volume it only shows me 11 Charaters of the Label. When I there is 12 charaters total.

I believe this is because FAT volumes have a 11 character limit and it appears the Label Column in Diskpart > List volume has been restricted to this even though NTFS Volumes can have 32 Character Label.

Could someone tell me how in WMI I can get the Volume number as well as the Volume Label to show?

In Windows 2008 Server R2(64bit), when Compressed (zipped) folder file size is over about 6GB, the error of "Compressed (zipped) folder invalid or Corrupted" occurs. Is it limit? I want to know the compressed (zipped) folder file size limit.

We have a DFS folder, that are on around 100GB.
But it will only replicate 88GB to our new server, and then stop.
There are still lot of files in Backlog.

What should i look at.

The Old server is 2012R2 and the new is only 2012 server.
It actully not an old and new.
The Old one is located in our headquoter in denmark, and the new one is a new server located in italia. So both servers need to be running. But there ofcouse need to be in sync :)

I need to make an small system for Fault Reappearance. 
I have been changing parameters in profile.cfg file of FSCT to meet the requirements below but it has never reached expectation.

# Requiremens
  - 500MB/min log should be written to the security log(eventlog)
  - Set volume D to audit sucess and failure events in Fileserver.
  - Set quota for the directory of security log(%SystemRoot%\System32\Config) in Fileserver.

# FSCT(v1.2) components 
  - 2 clients
  - ActiveDirectory (created 3500 domain users for fsct test)
  - FSCT controller 
  - File Server ( volume D: 200GB with audit of success and failure and Quota setting)
   (Windows Server 2012 R2 x 5 on AWS / Clients: c4.2xlargec, AD: t2.micro, Others: c4.xlarge)

# profile.cfg
 - wordfileopen 500
 - wordeditandsave 500

# result
 - security log 300MB/300sec
 - CPU utils (maximum) around 40%

I'm not sure increasing some values in profile.cfg would be efficient.

I'm also wondering security log would be bigger if I add more users in the domain.

Dear all,

This is from a secondary school.

We have a domain server running DFS namespaces, and control 3 file servers (A, B, C) to sync each other.

Yesterday, the domain server had been disconnected for around 2 hours in afternoon(2:30-3:50 pm), and then the network connected.

At around 9:50pm, user said the network drive is connected, but it's empty, no data.

Then, we found all folders in the file server (B) were empty, the data disappear.

Meanwhile, some of file server (C) data were disappeared as well.

Fortunately, the file server (A) kept the data until yesterday noon. As checked, the log showed it found the error in other multi servers and stop the sync.

Therefore, here we would like to ask whether the namespaces controller disconnected for around 2 hours could cause the data disappear in file server? How can I find the evidence to verify the issue?

I have HCL server with 6 SCSI 300 GB HDD with RAID 5 configuration, which was working fine since last 2 years,Suddenly its started giving some BEEP sound from the RAID Card  so i checked in RAID Configuration and found One PD(Slot 1) showing missing, I just googled it and then i went to RAID Configuration and then after re-insert that HDD once again in same slot then it started showing me as Configured BAD so i make it Configured GOOD by RAID BIOS WEB utility and then i replace missing PD(RAID BIOS Utility) and then make the HDD Online and then restarted the server now there is no BEEP sound from the server and HDD LED Blinking showing okay so my problem resolved but now when i started the server it started GOOD i pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del and tried to login , I am unable to login in the server,its giving me BSOD ,i have performed checkdisk on whole server it took near about 2 hours but it doesnt help i am unable to login when i am putting password and pressing Enter its showing loadin profile and then its showing my desktop and then immidiately BSOD and if if i dont login its working absolutely fine...

Please help its file server.

I have a thin provisioned virtual disk comprising of three physical disks that is showing as degraded:

When attempting to repair the disk with "Repair-VirtualDisk" the process errors out at 0%:

I can create a new virtual disk in addition to the existing one on the same three disks and no health warnings occur. I have installed KB3000123 and KB 2914743 which have been recommended elsewhere but saw no improvement.

I'm keen to avoid having to move the data to a new virtual disk, or backup and restore. 

Have seen several other people with this issue.  Is there something that I am missing?  Had a disk fail, replaced it following the guidelines laid out.  The virtual disk will not repair, repair finishes in 1 second and the virtual disk stays in the degraded state.

The performance tuning Guidlines for Windows Server 2008 R2, sais that we can disable the I/O priority management for a disk by setting to zero the following registry setting:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceClasses\{Device GUID}\DeviceParameters\Classpnp\IdlePrioritySupported.

My problem is that such a registry edit in my server's registry does not exist. I have to create it? If yes how?
