Lost my drive . "Searching preconfigured driver folders"

$

Hi all

I have 1TB secondary hard disk installed on a file server.

Suddenly, the hard disk drive disappeared from "My Computer" I no thing is showing as if the was unplugged.

When I go to Bois i can find it but not in windows.

I transferred that hard disk into another windows 7 PC. The hard disk is detected for installation new device.

A small windows with title "Driver Software Installation" is shown with hard disk name and model and the "busy circle" keeps running as the system is busy telling "Searching preconfigured driver folders".

I can see it in device manager. In Disk Management it shows the hard disk without any information with yellow exclamation.

I have more than 600GB files in it . I can't lose them by any how. I am in a serious disaster if I can't restore these files.

Accessing DFS namespace from a different domain and from behind a firewall

$

I have a situation where we're trying to set up a couple of DFS namespaces that will be accessed by servers within the hosting domain and also from servers in a DMZ and a different domain. Access from systems within the hosting domain works fine. The issue is with systems in a DMZ and separate domain. There is a one way trust where the DMZ domain trusts the internal domain and the DMZ servers talk to a group of RODC's for authentication. They are blocked from talking to other DC's for the internal domain. The DFS namespace is hosted on a member server that has the ports opened that are listed here .

Our network security team sees the DMZ servers trying to talk on ports 139 and 445 to internal domain controllers, which they won't be able to do. I'm assuming the DMZ servers should be able to resolve the DFS namespace from the RODC's and then talk to the namespace server, and they should never need to talk to an internal DC.

Can anyone help me figure out why this is happening?

Thanks,
Rich

DFS replication group replicate only in one direction.

Recently, we discovered that two RGs (out of 14) are only replicating in one direction. We noticed this because the backlog keeps piling up.

No errors in DFS eventlog. But we did notice that in debug log there are entries logged for these two connection objects.

[Error:9033(0x2349) BandwidthThrottler::ThrottleHelper downstreamtransport.cpp:6987 5628 C The request was cancelled by a shutdown]

It appears the connection attempts was rejected by the sending member.

Not sure what caused this.

The remaining RGs seems working normally.

Please advice.

Thanks.

I have a new file share that are using CIFS on a VNX Platform. I have share folder moved from an old location to the new. All permissions have ported over. I have a problem with granting new users access permissions. The permissions have shown the new user to have the appropriate rights but when they try to access the folder location, it is denied.

Thanks

DFS replication tombstoning errors

$

Hi,

Occasionally, and for various reasons, we have to redo a DFS replication group.  But when we do this, the new replication group spits out the following errors:

The DFS Replication service stopped replication on replicated folder <foldername> at local path <filepath\foldername> due to Error ID: 9098 (A tombstoned content set deletion has been scheduled). Event ID: 4004

I've seen a few threads online about how to combat this problem.  Namely to stop DFS replication service, delete the System Volume Information\DFSR folder on the drive hosting the problematic DFS files, and then start the replication all over again. Aside from my itchiness in deleting protected system files like this, I also just can't delete this folder.

Is there a supported way to get rid of this tombstoning issues and have DFS restart replication anew?  I'd really like to know.

Hi, friends!

Server logs often contain errors: An error was detected on device\Device\Harddisk\DR9 during a paging operation

But the disc in the system is not necessary. It can stand once. But currently it is not necessary.

Please help me understand what was going on?

Redirect folder redirection: "Failed to apply ... The filename or extension is too long."

$

I'm moving files from one server to another. The source server stores users' redirected folders. I have this set up with GPO filtering: If I make an account member in a specific group, a new set of Folder Redirection settings take effect, and is synchronized with another folder on destination server. This works well with my test accounts.

However, when I asked my "pilot" to log in, while the redirected folders (Desktop, Documents, etc) were created on the destination server, no files where transferred.

In the Event Viewer there's an Folder Redirection error 502. It says (and this is important because Google does not have many hits on this specific content of this event): "Failed to apply policy and redirect folder ... The filename or extension is too long."

(I don't bother to copy and paste the whole event because it is not in English.)

When I try to recreate this problem, I cannot, because Windows does not allow me to create folder structures where the file name or path gets too long.

I cannot easily investigate this particular user's folder structure, because he has exclusive rights on it and needs to have access to it continously.

Any hint or thought on how to attack this would be much appreciated.

DFSR database cloning - Importing fails error 9198 configuration error was detected

$

Hi,

To prevent the long DFS-R initial synchronization process, I've tried to use the new DFSR database cloning principle. I've followed the steps as outlined in the blogpost of Ned Pyle. The only 'big' difference in oure setup is that we use mountpoints in our source and destination side (in stead of volume letters).

- Source is: E:\User Volumes\%Mountpoint naming%

- Destination is: C:\Mountpoints\%Mountpoint naming%

The destination folder doesn't contain the DFSRPrivate folder or reparse points. Both nodes are in different AD-sites. The DFS console shows the same information (RG and RF) on both sites. No connections are configured, and only the primary (sending) server is added. (as described in the blogpost).

After the import-DFSRClone command has run the following error is dumped:

Import-DfsrClone : Could not import the database clone. Error code: 0x000023EE

The eventviewer on the destination side shows the following information:

EventID: 2414
Level: Error
Message: The DFS Replication service failed to import a cloned database. Error: 9198 (A configuration error was detected)

EventID: 2416
Level: Information
Message: The DFS Replication service has processed a portion of imported database records. These records consist of all database entries for files and folders, including previously deleted files from the past 60 days. No action is required. [skipped rest]

EventID: 2412
Level: Information
Message: The DFS Replication service started importing a cloned database. The server will remain in this state until it has completed import operations. No action is required [skipped rest]

Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong?

Audit Changes

Hi,

Server 2008 R2

I know there is auditing but I need to audit changes made to a file, but I need to know what the changes were ?  I dont think windows can do this, other than tell me who made the change and when.

Does anyone know a way to do this or some free software that can ?

Thanks

DFS Replication (dfsrs.exe) 100% cpu usage with no data movement

$

Have an existing replication group (working well). I add a new 2012r2 member server "server2" to the replication group and disabled Remote differenetial compression on the connection as this is on a LAN (1gb).

During initial sync some data moves at high speed as expected, but eventually (about 10 minutes after a reboot) the cpu usage for DFSRS.exe jumps to 100% and all disk IO related to dfsrs.exe stops, including writing to its debug log file: c:\windows\debug\dfsr01000.log

All replication activity ceases on the machine, and it is generally unusable as the CPU is spiked to 100% by DFSRS.exe.

When this happens the replication partner (server1) reports it has lost connection to the replication partner (server2). Indicating, from an external system, that DFSR has stopped functioning.

Stopping the service results in a timeout and subsequently a "dirty shutdown" of the DFSR database. It does recovery successfully if the service is restarted or machine rebooted, but this process repeats itself and the replication never completes.

Any insight to what could be going on would be appreciated.

How to share folders

$

I just cant figure this out...

We have a new Server2012r2.

Default installation: simply added to the network. In Explorer - Network i see all other computers. And all other computers can see Ser2012. A few folders have been shared with Everyone, which is great, and works fine.
(i should add that i have added the role File & Storage Services)

i want to create a folder DataDav just for user Dav (on a Win7) to see and use. But i cant. I've tried everything i can think of, but i just cant get this working.

Please explain.

I did try creating *another* user on the server and giving perms to the folder - but that means Dav has to log in twice. Once to his pc, once to this folder. We want *one* login, but i dont understand how to get Dav known to the server. (under Share-Permissions only Ser2012 shows in Locations)

Change DFSN to use DFS

I've read all the info. However, I need clarification on something.

The setting is per SERVER, correct? So essentially you should make sure all your targets are using the FQDN, remove the namespace from the server (delete as a namespace server), make the change (ill use powershell FQDN $true), then add the server back as a namespace server.

That is essentially it, yes?

How to Remove File Classification Infrastructure (FCI) Property / Declassify Files

Hello All:

We're working with Window Server 2012R2 and FCI.  I am able to apply FCI classification rules and remove them with no issues. However, how do we remove the FCI property once it's been applied?  I know this can be done manually file by file but that's not going to happen.  What am I missing? Thoughts?

Sync Folders for one user

My boss has 2 desktop computers, and a laptop, (and soon other gizmos). Sometimes he uses all three at once.

Can anyone recommend an easy way for me to set up file sync between all 3 and our server (2012r2) ????

This is inhouse, so server tools or 3rd party software, but *definitely not* cloud services. Only when his laptop is on our network can it sync. Oh and workgroup not domain at the moment.

Thanks.

If I am all here, does that mean I am not all there?

.xlsx is locked for editing by user.

Hi technet

I have a situation at one of our clients.

System spec.

Server 2012 R2 (DC and File server)

Users running windows 7 with office 2010

Now if User1 opens a particular .xlsx file from the server (network share) it will give this error to User2 that user1 has the file open. (correct)

But now if User2 opens the file and user3 tries to open it, it give the error to user3 that the file is locked by user1... The same happens if user2 or user3 should have the file open, and user1 opens the file, it will give the error locked for editing by user1.

This is making no sense. If the file is open by any of the users it will inform the second user trying to open it, its locked by user1.

So we never know who has it open.

I have checked for ghost excel running in task manager of any of the users, and nothing. I can see on the server that the file session has ended if someone close it, you can see the next user opening it (no hassles) but when a second person tries to open it wiles the file is active (in use) it tell them the file is locked by user1.

Please help on this weird situation.

How to remove a file from the DELETE PENDING state? (without rebooting...)

We have an ETL application and we have thousands daily tasks importing, generating, exporting, deleting and renaming CSV files. IN years is the 2nd time we see this behaviour, but now is worst than the previous one.

A file got stucked in a DELETE PENDING STATE! No one can read, delete, take ownership of the file. Procmon shows as DELETE PENDING state wich makes sense, this is the  behaviour of the APplication regaring the stored CSV files

I´m trying to avoid reboot or CHKDSK because is a production (non-stop) Server

ReFS FileIntegrity

$

Hi,

I have created a Mirror Space in Windows 10, and created a VHDX which was attached to a Server 2012 R2 VM and formatted as ReFS inside the VM.... however, running the command Get-FileIntegrity for both the storage space volume, and inside the VHDX in the guest VM, both show that file integrity is not enabled.

Firstly it seems that by default the integrity check is disabled, why would this be?

secondly, what are the effects of enabling it, I am trying to find an official technet blog that talks about this but I can't seem to find one.

finally, if i wanted to apply file integrity to the storage space volume, would it be a case of simply typing Set-FileIntegrity j:\ and this would set it on the root of the volume and all files underneath it??

many thanks

Steve
