DFSR database cloning - Importing fails error 9198 configuration error was detected

$

Hi,

To prevent the long DFS-R initial synchronization process, I've tried to use the new DFSR database cloning principle. I've followed the steps as outlined in the blogpost of Ned Pyle. The only 'big' difference in oure setup is that we use mountpoints in our source and destination side (in stead of volume letters).

- Source is: E:\User Volumes\%Mountpoint naming%

- Destination is: C:\Mountpoints\%Mountpoint naming%

The destination folder doesn't contain the DFSRPrivate folder or reparse points. Both nodes are in different AD-sites. The DFS console shows the same information (RG and RF) on both sites. No connections are configured, and only the primary (sending) server is added. (as described in the blogpost).

After the import-DFSRClone command has run the following error is dumped:

Import-DfsrClone : Could not import the database clone. Error code: 0x000023EE

The eventviewer on the destination side shows the following information:

EventID: 2414
Level: Error
Message: The DFS Replication service failed to import a cloned database. Error: 9198 (A configuration error was detected)

EventID: 2416
Level: Information
Message: The DFS Replication service has processed a portion of imported database records. These records consist of all database entries for files and folders, including previously deleted files from the past 60 days. No action is required. [skipped rest]

EventID: 2412
Level: Information
Message: The DFS Replication service started importing a cloned database. The server will remain in this state until it has completed import operations. No action is required [skipped rest]

Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong?

Server 2012r2 Search Indexing breaks regularly

$

I've seen several threads about this issue with no satisfactory answer.  We have three Server 2012r2 fileservers with search indexing enabled.  Regularly (at least once a week), the index seems to become corrupted - users get search results that are out of date and can't be clicked on (file names are returned without locations, icons are all plain white, etc). We have two short-term fixes: 1) Shut down the search service, defrag the search file, and restart the search service and 2) rebuild the entire index.

#1 takes anywhere from 15 min to an hour - it was suggested as a fix to a different indexing issue (where the file would grow to enormous size) but also seems to fix this, occasionally.

When #1 doesn't work, we do #2 which can take up to 12 hours.

This happens on 3 distinct 2012r2 servers in 3 separate domains, so we know it's not an isolated issue.  Nothing in the event viewer about the search service crashing or otherwise failing, and when I check the service is up and running despite the results being corrupt.  When the corruption is occurring, sometimes the indexed locations show properly in the indexing options on the FS, sometimes they don't show at all.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Windows 2008 R2 System Volume Information too large

Hello,

My System Volume Information folder on my Win 2008 R2 is over 300GB, total partition size is 3.7 TB. I'm using this partition to store third party backup software files. maybe a 100 files, that is all what this drive has. When I tried to delete some older System Volume Information files, nothing happens. I do not get permission denied or anything!! How can I reduce the size of this folder? Shadow copies is disabled on all partitions.

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

DFS - Comments/Description (Want to show in Client's Explorer)

Server 2012R2, Windows 10

Looking for a way to display comments or description of DFS Folder Links within a client's File Explorer. The desktop.ini method doesn't work, unless I just simply UNC path to the directory.

My users have some reasonably short directory names, but they really want to show a more descriptive name.  I'd prefer to not add length to the file paths with overly long directory names. That's where the comments field would come in handy.

I've not been able to find much chatter on this, aside from a thread from 2008.

Redirecting My Documents with a PUBLIC subfolder onto network share

I'm pretty sure this is something you may have come across before but I have yet to narrow it down on Google.

In the school that I am setting up AD onto, I am trying to figure out a method to automatically have a teacher's My Documents get redirected to a network share and have a subfolder named PUBLIC.

The goal is to allow students to save their work in the teacher's PUBLIC folder but not be able to save in the teacher's My Documents folder.

So far, I have it setup to auto redirect My Documents to a common share (i.e.  \\server\Data) so every user's My documents is redirected to \\server\data\%username%\.  That part is easy.

The problem is now I need to AUTO generate a folder and apply the correct permissions to allow students to save in this folder.

I am only a consultant with the school and the school's admin is not technically proficient so I am trying to automate as much as I can to make it easy and 'hands-off' for the admin (No comments please, I know!)

I am thinking I will need to create some sort of logon script for the teachers and use SETACL.  Or maybe a different design all together.

I'll continue to ponder on this tonight but I welcome any advise you can suggest.

Thank you

I am preparing windows 10 image in audit mode.

I prepared a the image and put unattend file in sysprep folder.

I ran sysprep using "sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:unattend.xml" Batch file.

It worked fine without any error.

When I restarted the pc it did not restart, instead it gave me error of "windows could not apply unattend settings during pass specialize"

So, I check the error log file in setuperr.log in panther folder and it gave me error which is shown in picture.

I could not find where the problem is.

Thanks.

Department share folder keeps losing quota template

Hi everyone,

I setup several departmental share folders, and applied different quota templates. Everything works fine, but there is only one departmental share folder keeps losing its quota template. I applied 500GB quota template on this share folder, but once for while, it dropped the quota template and applied itself to the default quota template.

I checked the event logs, and I didn't see any error related to this problem. Does anyone see this before? TIA.

DFS-N Restore to a new server help

Hello,

I have a DFS-N standalone server with several targets with ABE security enabled on each target.  I need to backup / restore this to another identical server.  Using powershell and DFSUTIL I can replicate the namespace targets to the new server just fine but the ABE security permissions do not carry over.  Icacls will export the ABE permissions but it does not reflect properly on the import to the new server, meaning it shows on the targets when viewed via c:\dfsroots\ but not in the DFS Mgmt snapin.  Furthermore, upon reboot, those permissions get reset to default.  Please advise if the ABE security on folder targets can be restored to a new server via the setup i currently have.

Thanks,

Hi,

I'm trying to get Work folders running in a small domain, however I'm stuck.

I'm getting error 0x80c80003 on the client (Windows 10 Pro). No files have been created in the Work folders folder.

Please advise on how to debug this problem. I haven't even found a way to turn on detailed logging on the server.

an error occured in sending the command

We migrated file shares to a new server.  Everything I think was working fine but now some users in certain excel files are getting an error "an error occured in sending the command".  It happens sporadically.  I has nothing to do with DDE.  It seems to have started either when we shut down the old file server which had not been sharing any files for a couple weeks or when we changed subnet IP information.

Maybe there are references in files to old server or something of that nature.  Although the file server was just shut off the files shares have been shut off for a long while although they could have not complained for a while.

DFSR Health Report - Permissions

$

I am trying to run a DFSR Health Report on a Windows 2008 Server under a Domain User account using the DFSRAdmin.exe command-line application.

I have setup delegated permissions to this domain user account in the DFS Management console; however, I still get an "Access is Denied" message in the health report output for every server in a replication group.

Where can I set specific permissions so that a Domain User account, which is not a member of Domain Admins or Local Admins group is permitted to generate a health report on a replication group?

I know that the default states only Administrators can generate a diagnostic/health report; however, I am wondering if Microsoft permitted delegation of authority for this operation since they do allow you to Manage Delegated Permissions for other administrative DFS tasks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

DFSR - Reversing replication on a two node pair

$

I currently have a pair of Windows 2012 R2 servers configured with DFS replication from one (primary) server to another backup server at a well connected remote site. I have two replication groups configured for separate volumes and they have been running without issue for about 9 months now. Checks and balances show that the backup content mirrors the primary content (excluding the exceptions I've flagged in the File filter).

As part of a DR exercise in our Test environment, I would like to reverse the replication process; in essence, I would like to switch the roles of each server around and have replication running the other way.

Assuming that both primary and backup server content is the same (i.e. users disconnected, changes to files prevented etc. prior to doing the switchover) I'm faced with the following scenario:

I can remove ALL DFSR content (databases, connections etc.) from both nodes, use the content on the backup server as the new "known good", remove all content from the new backup server and do the whole (preseed, database clone, etc. process from scratch). Advantages are that it will undoubtedly work as I'm not taking any shortcuts and I've never had any problems with the database cloning, preseeding with robocopy etc. process in the past. The process takes about a 12-15 hours and can easily be slotted into a Friday night/Saturday morning window without affecting our users.

However, I was wondering if anyone has managed to reverse replication in a scenario such as this where they used all or some of the existing DFSR settings and file content as it currently stands in place.

For example, the current setup has connectors between both primary and backup nodes operating in both directions; I've just ensured that no drive mappings, shares or access to the backup server is presented to preserve its content as a clone of the primary. I also have that node set to enabled (read-only) under its membership status.

Is it possible to safely remove all presentation of the DFSR volumes from the primary server, reverse the enabled and enabled (read-only) membership status of the two nodes, and then re-present drive access to the Backup node as the new primary server? I'm hoping that the status of the DFSR databases and content would remain valid and that replication in the reverse direction would commence without any re-hashing and file copying etc. I assume the only other work that might be needed (purely from a clean up perspective) is to check the DfsrPrivate sub-folders for mismatches etc.

If this alternative process was doable, I'd undoubtedly cut down the work required down to possibly a couple of hours including sanity checks etc.

The thoughts of the File Services and Storage community would be appreciated ... and apologies if I've been overly wordy with this post!

Cheers! PF.

We have a DFS folder, that are on around 100GB.
But it will only replicate 88GB to our new server, and then stop.
There are still lot of files in Backlog.

Can anyone help me?
What should i look at.

The Old server is 2012R2 and the new is only 2012 server.
It actully not an old and new.
The Old one is located in our headquoter in denmark, and the new one is a new server located in italia. So both servers need to be running. But there ofcouse need to be in sync :)

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?

Adding Network Share - Access Denied for all users on Windows 7

I am working on standing up a domain on my network using Server 2012R2.  So far, I have two Windows 10 (64-bit) machines and one Windows 7 (32-bit) machine added.  The Windows 10 machines were able to map the network drives without any issues and the drive I added to user profiles maps automatically as it should.  However, the Windows 7 machine will not map to the network drives and gets Access Denied.  I used both of my accounts (standard and admin) to login with on the W7 box, the share added to my standard user account does not map when I log in (nor does it for the other user) and I cannot connect with either account.  Admins do have full control permissions, but get access denied.

As for troubleshooting, I saw that there were about 1000 pages relating to this issue on TechNet, but I tried the troubleshooting steps from ten of them to no avail.  One share is for our personal folders which each user is explicitly added to that folder, but it gives access denied.  I checked the TCP/IP  settings for DNS, which are DHCP assigned and I have all of the recommended settings.  I have the suffix listed in GP and it shows under the TCP/IP suffix setting.  The machine has a forward and reverse record in DNS.  I tried to change HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters\EnableSecuritySignature value to 0 and HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA\RestrictAnonymous value to zero, which both did not work.  I tried Net Use command which allowed the connection, but mapping still fails.  I use the server IP in lieu of the domain name and that is still access denied.  I even shutoff the host firewall on the W7 machine to see if that may have been misconfigured.

I went back through my GP to find settings that may affect the W7 machines, but not the W10, which nothing stood out to me.  I am thinking there is a GP setting I made causing the denial, but cannot figure out which one.  Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Problem with DFS entry

We have a Windows domain using Windows 2008 and 2008r2 domain controllers.  We have a few Windows 2003 servers running as file servers.  This issue is regarding a problem one of our Win 7 workstations is having when they click on a pointer (folder) under the DFS.

Issue:  I have a Win 7 workstation that is having trouble with one of our DFS pointers.  We have a DFS setup and it has many different pointers that reference different file shares on servers throughout the network.  We also have servers with shares that we access across WAN connections.  When the user of the system in question clicks on the DFS drive they are able to see all the shares and access them without issue except for one share.  It is on a server across a WAN connection.  The user can see one folder on the share but not the others.  The user has permissions to see everything.  I have looked at the workstation IP properties using ipconfig /all and everything looks good including DNS servers.  I had the user reboot and log in again but the problem still persists.  No one else is having this problem that I am aware of.  I have personally checked at least 3 other systems.

Someone help me troubleshoot this issue.  Any help is appreciated.  thanks

Shared folder resulting in "There are currently no logon servers available to service the login request."

There are currently no logon servers available to service the login request.

Screenshots make the world go 'round.

My issue is as shown above (universalmedica\MNorwood - Domain Admin). The majority of what I have found when attempting to Google this is occurring when the user is trying to log into Windows. As seen, this is not my case. I am attempting to connect to a shared folder on the server above which was once connected and working but now I receive this error message. The same folder, shown in the following screenshot shows to be working (.\NTTC3 - local admin):

LogonSuccess

In attempts to troubleshoot, I have completed the following:

Results for ipconfig/tracert

This was done both prior to removing and re-joining the domain (using domain NetBIOS name as Workgroup name) and after.

    Additional information:
  • I am able to use this same computer to Remote Desktop into this server, running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The DNS/DHCP/AD/DC roles are on a separate server.
  • Default pings return in <1ms.
  • Screenshot may show the antivirus is disabled.

I'm pretty much at a loss as to where to proceed. Can anyone assist?
