an error occured in sending the command

We migrated file shares to a new server.  Everything I think was working fine but now some users in certain excel files are getting an error "an error occured in sending the command".  It happens sporadically.  I has nothing to do with DDE.  It seems to have started either when we shut down the old file server which had not been sharing any files for a couple weeks or when we changed subnet IP information.

Maybe there are references in files to old server or something of that nature.  Although the file server was just shut off the files shares have been shut off for a long while although they could have not complained for a while.

Hi

As title, after shutdown Server 2008 (r2) a couple of hours and restart it, some software service can't start and terminated unexpectedly.

I have tried to started these service manually, but it still terminated unexpectedly. Then when I re-launch the software, it show below error:

"Error connecting client to Hub Windows service on port 38631: Failed to retrieve RMIServer stub: javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: jmxmi"

I have check in the Windows Event log, find out the service error:

"The service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 11 time(s)."  Event ID 7034

I am also have tried to reinstall the software, but the problem still happen. So I don't think this is the Software problem.

What can I do for it? Please help me. Thanks!!!!!

Hello,

I am looking for the optimal ways to share folders in a Windows environment for the best security. We have Standard 2012 R2 Servers. Thanks for your input.

Server 2012 - iSCSI Virtual Disks Missing After Reboot

Hi guys.  I recently had to reboot my Windows 2012 Storage Server.  When it came up, the physical disks that the iSCSI virtual disks reside on were visible, as were the VHD files, but the targets were gone.  I looked in the File and Storage Services -> iSCSI but it says 'There are no iSCSI virtual disks', even though the VHD files are clearly there.  When I try to import the already existing ones, it gives me an error because that file already exists in the place I want to put it.  These are very large VHD files so moving them to other storage and then re-importing them could take days, if not longer.

The iSCSI targets are still visible under 'View All Targets', but they are no longer associated with their VHD files.  How do I reassociate them?  And why did the list of VHD files in File & Storage Services->iSCSI disappear in the first place!?

Thanks for any help!

NFS service on cluster with shadow copies enabled

We have a Windows 2012 R2 file server in a cluster. There is no cluster shared volume (because we user File Server Resource Manager and NFS, which are not supported with CSV)
So this is a "file server for general use"

We install the role "server for NFS".  Since we created the first NFS share resource in the cluster, a new resource was automatically created in the file cluster role : Network File System

We also enabled the shadow copies for the volume where are the shares (NFS and SMB share). We use the default schedule settings for shadow copies, twice a day.

After ~1 month, we failover the role on another node, and we noticed that the resource Network File System take a long time to come back online. So long that it goes in failed state... All other resources are working well. If we wait long enough, the resource become in online state eventually... About 15 minutes.

In the Windows event logs, in the ServicesForNFS-Server logs, we can see that the operational log is filled with operation like "created volume", "destroyed volume", "discovered volume" etc... And these operations take a really long time during the failover of the cluster. When they are all finished, the resource become online.

I tried to deactivate the shadow copies on the volume. And now the failover of NFS is working really fast !!! The NFS resource is online at the same time of the others resources.

So obvioulsy NFS does not work well with shadow copies! (On a cluster)

Does anyone else figured this issue out ? Or anyone has an idea what could be the cause of the issue??
We really need to have shadow copies on this volume !

Thanks !

Change DFSN to use DFS

I've read all the info. However, I need clarification on something.

The setting is per SERVER, correct? So essentially you should make sure all your targets are using the FQDN, remove the namespace from the server (delete as a namespace server), make the change (ill use powershell FQDN $true), then add the server back as a namespace server.

That is essentially it, yes?

DFSR Health Report - Permissions

I am trying to run a DFSR Health Report on a Windows 2008 Server under a Domain User account using the DFSRAdmin.exe command-line application.

I have setup delegated permissions to this domain user account in the DFS Management console; however, I still get an "Access is Denied" message in the health report output for every server in a replication group.

Where can I set specific permissions so that a Domain User account, which is not a member of Domain Admins or Local Admins group is permitted to generate a health report on a replication group?

I know that the default states only Administrators can generate a diagnostic/health report; however, I am wondering if Microsoft permitted delegation of authority for this operation since they do allow you to Manage Delegated Permissions for other administrative DFS tasks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Tiering - Storage Spaces - Maximum number of pinned files

Hello,

I need to pin the initialization files of a Email server to a SSD tier, but it seems that is limited to 2014 files.

I need to pin more than 5000 files to the SSD tier.

In the end of this post, I pasted the last storage tier optimization report.

- I tried to add new SSD in the pool.

- Tried to extend the size of the SSD drives.

The virtual disk is configured in "Simple" mode, I'll test with more SSDs, in "Mirror" mode and post the results here.

Anyone know if there is a limitation about the number of files that I can pin?

Thanks!

Single file stuck in DFSRBacklog

When I run the dfrsbacklog command using Server A as the sending member and Server B as the receiving member. Server A shows a single file in the backlog all the time. When I run the command using Server B as the sending member and Server A as the recieving member, the file doesn't show up.

How do I remove this file from the dfrsbacklog command output on Server A when i know the file is replicating correctly?

DFSN and Site Cost

I have lots of sites without a DC. All are put into the same site as our HQ office, which has 2 DC(s). However, some of these sites are on slower connections. I have noticed DFSN Referrals often chose one of these remote namespace servers (because they all have the same cost as the HQ servers).

Is the solution to this problem is to create sites for remote offices, even if they have no DC? They do have file/print servers, but location is pulled from subnet.

How to share folders

I just cant figure this out...

We have a new Server2012r2.

Default installation: simply added to the network. In Explorer - Network i see all other computers. And all other computers can see Ser2012. A few folders have been shared with Everyone, which is great, and works fine.
(i should add that i have added the role File & Storage Services)

i want to create a folder DataDav just for user Dav (on a Win7) to see and use. But i cant. I've tried everything i can think of, but i just cant get this working.

Please explain.

I did try creating *another* user on the server and giving perms to the folder - but that means Dav has to log in twice. Once to his pc, once to this folder. We want *one* login, but i dont understand how to get Dav known to the server. (under Share-Permissions only Ser2012 shows in Locations)

Net use errors

Hello,

Last week i changed the map structure on our file server, following that i had to change the logon scripts for the new network drives. But the drives are not always showing up when users boot.

I can add these drives manually without any problem, but they always disappear after a reboot ( even though i checked the box : "persistent"

If i try to add these drives by CMD i get error 53 and/or error 55

If i try it step by step, it works as far as :

Net use S: \\fileserver\share\.....

And even further from : \\fileserver\share\01. AAAA

to : \\fileserver\share\99. ZZZZZ

But when i get to this : \\fileserver\share\100. XXXX

till \\fileserver\share\120. YYYYY

i get these errors

System Error 55 / system error 53 has occurred. the network path was not found

Anyone has an idea ?

Removing DFS File server for re-image/re-partition

Greetings all,

I haven't done anything like this before, and was in search of some guidance.  Currently I have 2 HP Storageworks servers, running storage server 2008, one of which I want to remove from replication and re-size the partitions and reinstall the OS off of the restore disc. Currently the servers are in full mesh replication, and host several namespaces.   My question:  Once I stop user access to the affected server, I'm going to remove it from DFSR replication by deleting the member within all replication groups.  Once I see the DFSR 4010 event, am I good to start doing what I need to do or do I need to actually remove the affected server from the namespaces themselves and re-add once up and running? Sorry if this sounds noob-ish.  Thank you in advance!

Redirected Folders DFS and write ISSUE struggling with this one.

$

Hi hope someone can help or give me some pointers as where to look.

these are windows 7 desktops, access DFS shares on server 2012R2.  redirected folders / desktop /documents etc.

Folder redirection works fine, initially, the user works no problems, then all of a sudden its totally random they loose write access to there Redirected folders, reading is totally fine.

Now accessing their redirected desktop for example, using UNC works fine they can read and write, its only when using the DFS path, they can read but not write. ???

I have gone over all the permissions with a fine tooth comb , even check the DFSROOT share perms.

The only way to fix this currently is to remove there profile, and delete the redirected folders, so they are all created again.

Then it all works fine.

This is totally random event, and affects random users.

any clues anybody would be greatly appreciated

many thanks

In write-back cache storage tier, how do you configure the threshold for how many Kilobytes are considered a small write?

$

0

In Windows Server Storage Spaces, a virtual disk with tiered storage contains a write-back cache. Let's assume that the write-back cache can achieve 500MB/s while the slower tier operates at only 75MB/s. After creating the virtual disk and creating a freshly formatted volume, it is immediately noticeable that a 386MB file takes longer than one second. One would hope that the file would be copied in under a second assuming that the write-back cache would consume the operation, but it doesn't. Instead the storage tier detects that the write size exceeds the pre-defined threshold for writing to the write-back cache and forwards the write to the slowest tier which then takes over 4 seconds to complete. I find it disappointing that the write-back cache will not accelerate this file copy operation.

Background information can be found here:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn387076(v=ws.11).aspx#bkmk_wbc

Two questions:

1) What is the default threshold (in Kilobytes) for Storage Spaces to choose to perform writes to the write-back cache?

2) What command can be issued in PowerShell to modify the threshold so that I can instruct Storage Spaces to perform larger writes to the write-back cache?

File Server Resource Manager: Unable to connect to FSRM on computer..

In our environment one of our users is able to "Connect to a Remote computer" using the File Server Resource Manager tool under Adminstrative tools on a local machine. However when I and another user try on our local machines it gives us the error. Unable to connect FSRM on computer xxxxx. This can happen if the remote computer does not have the Windows Server 2008 or later version of FSRM installed, or if a connection cannot be established because it was blocked by a Windows Firewall.

Since were able to connect to one of our fileshares on a local computer I don't see how it could be server related. I tried using my super user account on the computer that is working and it was able to connect. So it's not an account issue either. We've tried disabling the firewall and uninstalling/reinstalling the FSRM feature through the Control Panel (turn Windows Features on/off) but neither were successful.

Any ideas as to what might be different between our two computers where it doesn't work and the one that does?

Tiered Storage with SSD, 15k and 7.2k drives all together?

$

Just wondering how tiered storage in Server 2012 R2 would handle a mix of 15k and 7.2k HDDs with SSDs in regards to performance. Ideally, I'd love there to be a way to essentially have three tiers, but it seems Server 2012 R2 will only differentiate between SSD and HDD.

If I do make a tiered storage pool with SSD and both 15k and 7.2k HDDs, will windows understand 15k are faster than 7.2k? Will it just make the 15k slower because it is waiting for the 7.2k? Or will some files (blocks) be faster just because they happen to reside on 15k instead of 7.2k? Just curious and haven't found anyone else asking this question.

My current server is R520 with Perc 710 and:

2 x 400GB SAS SSD

3 x 300GB 15k SAS HDD

3 x 2TB 7.2k SAS HDD

I'm a high school teacher and we have this server here to 'play' and learn with the students.

Thanks a bunch!!

DFS-Replication process time

$

I setup a dfs replication between two Windows servers. The branch server is Win2K8 R2, and the hub server is Win2012 R2.

There are about 1Tb size files on Win 2K8 R2 needed to replication to new Win 2012 R2 server. Does anyone know how long it will take? I have started the process about one and half hour, but I still haven't seen anything replicated to new server. The only thing replicated to new server is the top shared folder. Is there anything wrong, or I just need to be patient? I ran the diagnostic report, but it didn't say anything about it.

Microsoft recommended allocation unit size for a file server

Hi,

Planning to host file server guest VM on based Hyper-V 2012 R2. Expected size of the File Server VM will be 20 TB. what should be the recommended allocation unit on base Hyper-V when I create a disk to host the VM ?

If I go for 4096 then I think, I can not create more than 16 TB?

Any suggestion or recommendation ?
