Could not create tiered storage
Hello,
I am trying to create tiered storage on single HDD and SSD. It is created successfully via powershell and gui, but when I try to use Set-FileStorageTier commandlet it shows:
Set-FileStorageTier -FilePath H:\ACCTRES.dll -DesiredStorageTierFriendlyName tt_Microsoft_HDD_Template Set-FileStorageTier : The specified volume does not support storage tiers.
When I try to use defrag:
PS C:\Windows\System32> defrag H: /G Microsoft Drive Optimizer Copyright (c) 2013 Microsoft Corp. Invoking tier optimization on New Volume (D:)... Tier Optimization: 100% complete. The request is not supported. (0x80070032)
OS is Windows 2012R2.9600, freshly installed (without any updates or software), but same thing happens on completely updated OS.
SSD - SAMSUNG MZ-7KM4800 SATA (480GB)
HDD - Toshiba 500GB SATA
HDD - WD Enterprise Storage 2TB
Server ASUS PS4/TS300: tried on internal Intel storage controller and on LSI MegaRAID 9266-4i JBOD.
Should I use a virtual machine as a File Server?
Dear all,
Please give me advice for this. I'm so confuse. My ex-boss was retired. He setup our system now. We have a server with 16GB of RAM. So he install a Windows Server 2012 on it - works as DC, and another Windows Server 2012 inside DC - on Hyper-V, works as File
Server. When we're working with data stored on File Server, it's so slow.
I don't know whether it is good or not? Please give me an advice. Do I need to install File Server on a Physical device? Is virtual machine be the main issue of slow transfer data in my network?
Thank you very much!
Regards, Học Nguyễn.

Hash Different When Seeding DFS using Robocopy
I'm trying to seed at DFS Replication using steps in technet. If I look at the hash of the original file and the hash on the USB drive containing files copied using Robocopy they match but when I copy them to remote server using same robocopy command they no longer match. I tried using explorer to copy and same results. What's causing this?

Deleting files with long names
Hi guys,
I am having difficulties in deleting files on my shared folder. I get an error message that says the " the file cannot be deleted because the file names or path is too long". I have googled and googled and even giggled but to no avail.
I understand that i am getting this error because the file names are too long but what i want to know is how i can
change files in folders to use shortnames.
Thank you in advance.

DFSR.exe CPU 100% after network issue
Hi guys,
We have a DFSR setup between 2 servers (both VMs).
The network card of the 1 host of the one went down for 7 minutes and since then the DFSR service is 100%.
I checked the event log and I got EventID 2214 for the drive on this server.
Log Name: DFS Replication

Description:
The DFS Replication service successfully recovered from an unexpected shutdown on volume P:.This can occur if the service terminated abnormally (due to a power loss, for example) or an error occurred on the volume. No user action is required.
Logs though are running as crazy as it seems to be checking again ALL the files:

Reseeding DFS Replication
Files on DFS rollback to previous versions
Hello all,
I have this simple (I think setup), as follows: two virtual machines runninig Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard with the following roles:
- AD DS
- AD CS
- File Server
- Network Policy Server
- DFS
For each department in the organisation I've configured two shares (on each server) presented via DFS. My initial thought was to use DFS as a a poors man's replication, just to be sure the data is there in case one of the servers fail.
Now, the issue: we have two colleagues working extensively on this file-server, editing mostly Excel files. The issue is that one colleague edits a file, saves and closes it. The other colleague tries to open the file, but the modifications are not there.
Evevn stranger is that after some time the colleague that did the initial change may (or may not, it doesn't alsways happen) opens the Excel file and the modifications are gone.
Another important aspect: everyone is accessing the folders using the DFS namespace, not the server name(s).
Thanks,
Seb
Log File for "Restore Previous Version"
Server is running Windows Server 2012R2 and clients are running Windows 7.
Volume Shadow Copy runs twice a day. One user has begun noticing older versions of files (2-3 times in the past couple of days). Once I was able to verify that a newer version existed in Volume Shadow Copy, but the current version was from several days prior. The other times, the user reports the current version becomes accessible several minutes later.
Is this a glitch/error or did someone unknowingly restore a previous version?
Question: Is there / Are there any logs which might show if a previous version of a file has been restored?
Question: Is there a way to restrict access to "Restore Previous Versions".
The server and workstation are not showing any out of the ordinary errors or warnings in event viewer.

DFS not working over VPN
Dear all,
I am migrating a DFS from a Windows Storage Server 2003 to a Windows Server 2008 R2. Everything went fine except one thing.
I cannot access the DFS over the VPN.
Internally everything works.
Over VPN I get access the netlogon and sysvol folder but I get the message \\FQDN\DFSname not found after some time
When the DFS was located on the Windows 2003 Server I could access it over VPN.
So Browsing \\FQDN\DFSname does not work, ping to FQDN works,\\FQDN\ gives me sysvol and netlogon shares.
Any ideas ?
Kind regards,
Kenny
How to increase OutputBufferLength in SMB2 QueryDirectory Response
Hi,
I have two Windows 2k12R2 machines, one behaving as client and one behaving as server.
When I do a directory enumeration, the client sends a QueryDirectory request with OutputBufferLength having 65,536 bytes. I have huge number of files in this directory.
Is there a way to increase this size ? That way my client would be able to do a directory enumeration by sending lesser requests to server.
From SMB2 specification, I see that OutputBufferLength should not exceed "MaxTransactSize" that gets negotiated in the Negotiate Request. The MaxTransactSize that gets negotiated is 8388608 (0x800000).
Is there a registry setting that will allow me to increase the value of OutputBufferLength ?
Thanks in advance.
Mount point icons change
I have an issue that no one here has previously encountered and for which online searching turned up nothing so far. We have a two node Windows 2008 R2/SQL 2000 R2 cluster. Some of the storage utilized by the cluster is mount volumes under a common mount point. The mounted volumes all have a dependency on the mount point and all fail over between nodes successfully.
My question is about the icons that are presented for the mounted volumes when they are viewed in windows explorer. Sometimes the icons are what look like four stacked file servers, sometimes the icons are half of the previous (two stacked file servers?) other times a yellow folder icon, all have the "shortcut" arrow. The icons are sometimes all the same and other times are a mix of the various possibilities. All the volumes can be browsed in Explorer irregardless of the icon being displayed. None of the icons are the same as the icons listed under the cluster Services and Applications. The icon will change for a mounted volume although when/why the change takes place hasn't been determined.
Although this might be somewhat vague, can anyone offer any insight into what the various icons represent and why they change?
Thanks

Folder Redirection - Files not available when not online
Hi,
Over the last fortnight some of my network users have been unable to access and work on their files whilst they are offline. Windows either presents the files as greyed out with a red cross of not present them at all.
To resolve this, I'm asking my users to turn off their wifi through flight mode and re connect to the network. At which point the files become available again. This is the same case with my remote users when they disconnect and connect through the VPN we ave deployed.
No configuration changes have been made to I'm a little unsure as to how this issue has started to creep into my network.
I am currently controlling this folder redirection though group policy and active directory.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.
Adam.
Can't map network drive with alternate credentials
Hi,
I have a File Server cluster in 2012 R2. I implemented this new server about three months ago. I migrated the file server from 2008 R2. The new implementation consist of two physical Dell servers connected to a EqualLogic SAN over an ISCSI network.
We notice last week that we can't map a drive using alternate credentials. It's not an authentication issue since you can login with those alternate credentials and map the drive but it doesn't work if you want to map the driver with different credentials. We are getting "Windows Cannot access \\servername\path\ Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network."
Weird thing is that I can map the C:\ drive using alternate credentials which is local to the server.
I've searched online but I haven't found a solution yet. Any recommendations?
Why ReFS can not be used on removable drives?
Hi
Around the internet I can read that ReFS can not be used on removable drives. Unfortunately when I was trying to go deeper - I can not found or can not deduce the answer why. I'm formatted for testing purposes my 1TB External USB hard drive successfully with ReFS. Are there any contraindications to not use it with ReFS (Resilient File System) to store data? I'd like to use with Bitlocker. Please share your experience.

Kamil
DFS Replication (dfsrs.exe) 100% cpu usage with no data movement
Have an existing replication group (working well). I add a new 2012r2 member server "server2" to the replication group and disabled Remote differenetial compression on the connection as this is on a LAN (1gb).
During initial sync some data moves at high speed as expected, but eventually (about 10 minutes after a reboot) the cpu usage for DFSRS.exe jumps to 100% and all disk IO related to dfsrs.exe stops, including writing to its debug log file: c:\windows\debug\dfsr01000.log
All replication activity ceases on the machine, and it is generally unusable as the CPU is spiked to 100% by DFSRS.exe.
When this happens the replication partner (server1) reports it has lost connection to the replication partner (server2). Indicating, from an external system, that DFSR has stopped functioning.
Stopping the service results in a timeout and subsequently a "dirty shutdown" of the DFSR database. It does recovery successfully if the service is restarted or machine rebooted, but this process repeats itself and the replication never completes.
Any insight to what could be going on would be appreciated.
