Share Huge Files

Dear Support,

We have customer whose marketing department is responsible for about 20TB of image files that are used to make their brochures and also to drive the 3D printers that print the patterns on top of the tiles. In particular, the 3D printer images are big (20-30GB each).

The Issue customer has, is that they need to share these files with a number of external partners based around the world. External Parties do the graphics work on these files and then return them to the Marketing Dept for use.

We to need suggest a solution to do this sharing (OneDrive?) , please help with best option,

Should we suggest sharepoint  or some services on Azure,

Thanks and Regards,

Hasan Reza.

Hello all;
I am beta testing the new Windows 2016 server.
And the Storage Spaces, of which is NOT being utilized at this moment, and may never be used on this machine is eating up my memory. 910.2MB Memory used at all times.

Is there a way to disable this feature for the time being, so that it does not continue to eat memory when it is NOT being used at all?

Thanks All

Verify Transfer Using Windows Server Migration Tools

I recently moved a very large file share from one server to another using Receive-SmigServerData  and Send-SmigServerData . I compared the original size and the new size on the new server and they are very close but not exactly the same. how can I easily find the differences? Are there logs that are recorded during the transfer that will show me or a command I can run to compare the two?

Re Enabling a disabled replication group member, without losing data as PreExisting

Hi All -

We have 2 servers in this scenario

Server1 - Primary. All folder targets point to a share on this server and all prod data is placed here.

Server2 - Data from Server1 is replicated here for DR.

We have three main replication groups setup for this. I discovered a large backlog to Server2 for all three groups, and in investigating, found that on the MEMBERSHIPS tab of the replication group, both servers are set to disabled.

Checking my head here - To not have all of our prod data on Server1 moved to the pre-existing folder and screw my day, Ill need to enable Server2 first, correct, then after some time, enable Server1?

Thanks!

Probably Already Answered: Best practices for Local storage spaces SSD/HDD VM Storage

$

Hi, TLDR: How does storage spaces manage VHD/x's on tiered storage? What are best practices? I have two servers that I have to setup for a small finance firm, both identical, decent network speed between them. Both with same SSD/HDD. They have local attached drives, they don't want to look at expansion options or anything, as they like it all hanging from the ceiling in their storage.

How does hyper-v manage the fast provisioning for the VHD's? Like, if I am creating volumes, what ratio's should I consider for the deployment scenarios.

Should I consider multiple volumes with different HDD/SSD ratio? Or does hyper-v do most of that thinking for me, as an example, say application server has 1TB of records that are frequently accessed, and 10TB that are less-frequently accessed, should I go with 1:10?

How many options should I be considering, how much thinking do I have to do and how much thinking does storage spaces do?

Normally I would just attach all the devices to a VM and cluster it from there, but they requested that everything be on the host.

------ HELP - HELP - HELP ------- User can't access shared files ------ EMERGENCY

Hello Everyone,

This is very URGENT, please HELP when you read this message.

I had 3 Domain Controller: 2012 Primary, 2012 Secondary, 2003 secondary

The 2003 DC is also a file sharing server.

During the rename process, for some reason,  I "Deleted" 2003 DC  out of DC roles.

After the migration completed, all servers/workstation are able to see and login to new Domain Name.  The only server that NOT login to new domain name is 2003 DC/FILEsharing

As of now, the old 2003DC/Filesharing still has permission set from old domain name which is "MAF1"

The problems I had now is some users start loosing the access permission to the file sharing.

How do I connect this old DC/Filesharing to new Domain name with all the share permission from new domain.

Please help as I need to fix this ASAP.

Thanks inadvance

DFSUtil: How to add a Namespace server trouble

Hello, I am unable to add the actual servers as a referral on out 2008 R2 server. I can add the DFSNamepace, and the folder targets, but the namespace server is not listed. What am I missing?

I need to make sure I can use powershell to do this. I can manually add, but it defeats the purpose for automation.

Thank you for your assistance!

DFS Guide - Existing Shares

$

I want to setup DFS replication for our DR site.  We have a 2012 Server at our main site, and a 2012 R2 Server at the DR site.

I'm finding all kinds of guides on setting up DFS from scratch, but not many dealing with existing shares.

We want to start replication without interrupting the existing file share names and permissions.

Anyone have a good guide or video on this?

Thanks!

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

$

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?

Needing to find a replication solution from a 2012r2 files server to a remote site with very poor connection speeds

$

Hi all,

I am hoping someone can offer me a solution or some advice.

At the moment we have a central office with a NBN connection. Amongst other things, we have a terminal server needing to be accessed from remote clients for certain management software.

We also have RWA set up and could also use a VPN to access the main file server.

The problem we have is that Telstra can only offer an ADSL2+ connection at one of our remote locations, right in the center of Darwin mind you, that is allowing us approx 4Mbps down and about 0.4-0.8 Mbps up, on a good day.

This is barely usable for downloading or opening files directly from the file server but due to the network speed on uploads is not viable to re upload to the server the files that have been modified by remote users.

I have previously used a Thecus NAS server with 2012R@ storage Server installed and I am wondering if I created a synced copy of the file share on the Thecus NAS box, and used the offline file feature on the synced directory how this would work.

Basically until a faster connection can be offered buy a provider, even terminal server access is unusable but the remote office at least needs to have access to modify and work with files on the main server.

I suppose my question is if I did use a NAS box running Storage server 2012r2 and a remote user opens an excel spreadsheet will the remote NAS OS lock the file until the changes have been synced back to the host or does it have to sync back the whole file.

Some of the files that are being worked on are large spreadsheets and if a remote user only makes a few changes, I am thinking that it make be an acceptable solution if only the changes are synced back to the host.

Anyhow, as you guy's have no doubt picked up on, I have not used offline files extensively and unsure of the limits and capabilities but if any advice on this idea, or any other advise of how to try to get this remote site functional, without paying $7k install fee and about $1k/mth for a Telstra 2mb/2mb dedicated line, I'd really appreciate your opinions and thoughts.

Thx in advance for any advice you people may be able to offer me.

AD-less S2D cluster bootstrapping - Domain Controller VM on Hyper-converged Storage Spaces Direct

$

Is it a supported scenario to run a AD domain controller in a VM on a hyper-converged S2D cluster? We're looking to deploy a 4-node hyper-converged S2D cluster at a remote site. We would like to run the domain controller for the site on the cluster so we don't need to purchase a 5th server. Will the S2D cluster be able to boot if the network links to the site are down (meaning other domain controllers are not accessible)? I know WS2012 allowed for AD-less cluster bootstrapping but will the underlying mechanics uses for storage access in S2D in WS2016 work without AD? Is this a supported scenario? AD-less S2D cluster bootstrapping?

Shadow Copy on Clustered File Server Windows 2012 R2 (There are no previous versions available)

$

Hi,

I have a File Server cluster in Windows Server 2012 R2 as follows:

  • 2 virtual servers (vMware), with 4vCpus, 8 GB of RAM, data disks in RDM (Raw device Mapping).
  • 3 clustered disks + 1 Quorum.
  • I do not use DFS for the cluster, instead I use File Server role within the Windows Cluster Failover.
  • Hypervisor vMware 6
  • VMware Tools installed and upgraded on virtual machines
  • Fully Updated Windows
  • The 3 clustered disks are allocated in a DELL Compellent Storage
  • The 3 clustered volumes are formatted in NTFS, blocks of 4k without compression.

When I activate Shadow Copy on a local volume (non-clustered volume, like C:\), the backup versions made by shadow copy appear in the previous versions tab:

Shadow copy example on the C: \ drive of a cluster node:

When I activate shadow copy on clustered volumes, nothing appears on this tab previous versions:

On the workstations, you can see the contents of the tab previous versions:

Accessing the sharing by Fileserver cluster name (\\Clustername\share) I can also view shadow copies in previous versions tab.

After several searches I did not find anything related to shadow copy in a clustered environment.

Why logged in as domain administrator or any other account with administrative privilege can not view content previous versions directly on the drive, only using share?

Has anyone ever had this problem and can share information?

Hey we got 2 Servers (no Namespace) we use DFS-R only for Replication (manuell Failover)

data replicates fine from \\server1\data to \\server2\data
no Problem with Excel word pdf or Images txt all fine.

we got Software for announcements with proprietary file endings (i think its no Need to Name the Software, no Body will know)

normaly when you open some of the files it genarates *.ldb *.alf and opens.  But with activated DFSR on the Folder they dont open. it gives the message back file is in use, and do not generates the above files
''
--- so i tried it with filefilters on dfsr an it works... but they dont replicate after closing. So whats on here?  how to get a good solution?
