Windows 2016 storage spaces direct 2-tier Volume (VirtualDisk)

Hi everyone,

After I had read this article (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-docs/storage/storage-spaces/storage-spaces-fault-tolerance?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396) and this article (https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/filecab/2016/09/06/volume-resiliency-and-efficiency-in-storage-spaces-direct/)I had aquestion:

What will happen ifI createa 2-tier volume onSSD 2-way mirroning tier (performance) and HDD 2-way mirroning tier (capacity)? Is it supported configuration? Will ReFS work properly? I mean, will ReFS always write data to the “performance” tier?

Shared Folder error "Action can't be completed because folder or a file in it is open in another program"

We're receiving this error on one of our shared folders on a local server. Changing names to a file or folder is fine, however, as soon as we open a file (and then close it) we receive the error above when attempting to change file and folder names. The particular folder in question is one with a very large amount of files/folders, which only a very select few have access. So the likelihood that the conflict is due to two individuals working in the same file/folder is impossible.  We've also replicated this issue on multiple systems, which leads us to believe the issue is on the server side.

Does anyone have advice for resolving this?

the action cannot be completed because the file is open on another program

I experience a weird issue.

I have Windows 2008 server. Created 2 shares on the server. Every day starting between 2 and 7 PM i cannot save or rename files and folders at the root of the share. I have no problem to rename files in sub folders. This issue happens if i trying to rename file on vie server console, or accessing the share from Windows 7. no issues from Windows XP. the error i get: "the action cannot be completed because the file is open on another program"

I don't have any software running on that server except Backup Exec that runs backup at night. I uninstalled Antivirus, still same issue.

Please help.

Building FTP over SSL

Hi

We have a FTP site created on a windows server 2008 R2 standard and we plan to go with FTP over SSL.

and we have 2 clarifications:

1)we generated an internal SSL certificate  from our internal CA and things are working when we test from filezilla client, directories are listed and certificate warning is generated even after installing the root certificate on the client.

So how to avoid the SSL warning noting that we have SSL certificate installed on the FTP server generated from the ADCS and we installed root certificate on the client side.

warning is below:

"The server's certificate is unknown"

2) we are not able to connect to the same FTP server using ftp command line or from windows explorer, I have read that FTPS is not supported on these clients please I need your help to confirm this point and it will be great if u provide an official document from Microsoft confirming this point.

Thanks in advance.

Can you use FSRM file screening with REFS on Windows Server 2016?

I have setup a new server which I would like to setup as file server on Windows Server 2016. I've installed FSRM along and set it up.  However when I setup a file screen I cannot see the DATA drive which is formatted in REFS.  I would really like to use REFS as it has some very nice features in combination with Veeam 9.5.

DFR-R from i-scsi disk or symbolc link

Hi all, I'm setting up a DFS-R folder replication between a Windows 2008R2 (branch) Server and a Windows 2012R1 (Hub) Server.

On my branch server I have an I-scsi connected disk and on that I want to replicate one folder, but during the Replication Setup  Wizard the administrative share for that drive (let's say F$) isn't show up.

Is it supported to setup DFS-R replication from an I-scsi disk?

If not is it supported to have a symbolic link to a folder on a different drive (a local drive where the administrative share shows up  without problem)?

Thank you in advance, George

Is it possible to convert thick provisioned to thin provisioned in windows server 2012 R2 Storage Spaces without data loss.

Sir,

I am shifting File server data from FS1 server (Server 2012R2 Std) to FS4 (Server 2016 Std).

In FS1 Server Storage Configuration are as below:

Hard Disk Used: 4TB- 2 Nos. HDD + 1TB-2 Nos. SSD

Provisioning-Fixed

Layout-Mirror

Capacity-4.57 TB

Allocated-4.57 TB

Storage Tiers-Enabled

In FS4 Server Storage Configuration are as below:

Hard Disk Used: 1 TB-6 Nos. SSD

Provisioning-Thin

Layout-Mirror

Capacity-3.5 TB

Allocated-2.71 TB

Storage Tiers-Disable

In FS1, i have created D:\Shares\UsersProfile which saved all thin client users Profile using Folder redirection Policy. but within few months our Storage spaces D drive speed is become very slow which hits its performance. Now Storage Spaces speed is only 50-60 MBps. It may be that i am using the Storage Tiers and HDD.

But in FS4 i am using only SSD and storage space D drive speed is more than 395 MBps.

Now i want to Use only SSD in FS1 Server and remove HDD.

But in FS1 Server, I am using the Thick Provisioning and Storage Tiers.

So, i am searching the way to convert the Thick Provisioning to Thin and disable storage Tiers to retires the HDD and finally remove it.

File folder security question - windows server 2008

I'm the admin of a windows 2008 server.

I noticed (in the folder security tab) that a user had access to certain folders on our server that he should not have had access to. I have no idea how he got that access.

Is there any way to see when he was granted access to those folders and who gave it to him? Or any other information on how this could have occurred.

Also is there a way to see if that user have viewed or done anything with the files in the folder?

Thanks in advance.

Windows Server 2016 - general disk-I/O L2 caching?

Backround

In WinSrv 2012 you were forced (in a quite awkward way I must say) to predict what SSD cache sizes you needed and only using "Windows Storage Spaces" (WSP) and when done you were practically stuck with that configuration. And the internal cache management of WSP wasn't even real time since "hot" sectors had to be moved in and out by a background batch job running each night.

Actual requirements

What I'm looking for is a more general and true real time disk L2 caching using for example SSD that is not dependent of WSP thus could be used on top a any kind of drive or disk subsystems. Also, I want to be able to alter cache size and allocate space to different disks "live" i.e. without the need to reboot or deallocate the whole SSD-drive. Nice to have but optional is the ability to change between different cache algorithms like LRU/MRC/ARC etc.

Question:

Has this changed in anyway in WinSrv 2016 and can any of the above needs be implemented? If that’s the case, are there any architecture and design principles lying around somewhere that might describe how?

Thanks in advance "anyone"!

Take Large Volumes and Shrink Them But Keep Under One Share

My company is running into a few issues with large (and growing) volumes with high-res AV files and folders. Fully virtual environment.

What we'd like to do is:

1. Instead of having 1 20TB volume, we'd like 4x5TB volumes in case if there is corruption or loss, we only have to restore one of those 5TB volumes, not 20TB

2. I've set up DFS, but we cannot view 4 separate volumes in one view under "Media" since that isn't how DFS works.

Is there a way to have multiple drives that are able to view under one share? I've been unable to find anything that fits the bill exactly. I can set up a DFS namespace and everything is under "media", but that's not exactly what I need since it still has to be on a single volume. Not worried about replication.

Thanks!

How to list domain controllers with type of operating system

Hi

I have two domains and in one domain I already updated everything to Windows 2012 R2 domain controllers. On second domain I have Windows 2003 servers and need to update them as well. I would like to use dsquery or any other available command to list all domain controllers and type of operating system they are running.

I was able to fire up dsquery and find out domain controllers and which one is global catalog but it will not list operating system. Sure i can go to Active directory users and computers and right click every one of them and find out but it would take some time so I am just wondering whether there is any command that will list domain controllers and type of operating system they are running

Power shell doesnt work since I am on windows 2003 on that second domain

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?

Enabling S2D and Failover Clustering for SoFS

We are interested in using the S2D for creating a Failover Cluster and deploying the scale out file server.  In our testing, we have 4 plain jane computers running server 2016.  Each machine has 2 HDD @ 500GB each.  I understand that only one disk from each machine will be able to be used for the storage space. We are running into 2 issues. First, the disks are appearing with an "unknown" "media type" attribute. Second, when I run the cluster validation tests I get failed on the unknown attribute type but also a "Cannot Pool Reason" of "Insufficient Capacity". The disks are blank they are online but have no volumes/partitions created.  The drives appear under file and storage services in server manager as a primordial pool and if I add them to storage pools I can fix the "media type" issue, however, when I delete the pool the "media type" attribute is lost. Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

Large number of open file handles on fileserver (Server 2012R2) after user's rds session has long been terminated through log off

Hi,

we do have an rds farm with roaming profiles (not profile disks) consisting of 6 terminal servers ("srvts001" to "srv006" 2012 R2), 2 domain controllers ("srvdc01", "srvdc02" 2012 R2), 1 SQL/Fileserver ("srvsql01" 2012 R2).

Roaming profiles are stored on srvsql01 in share RDS. Oplocks are disabled, directory caching is disabled.

Everything was running without problems for 1 or 2 years. Recently (about 2 weeks ago) users began complaining about being logged on with a temporary profile. Investigation showed a lot of open file handles from previous (no longer existing) sessions on the file server.

E.g. user1 had logged on to rds one day and logged off in the evening (not just disconnected, really logged off) and when he logs in the other day on the rds farm he is logged on with a temporary profile due to the profile service being unable to access the roaming profile as it is (event log) "in use by another process".

Looking at the fileserver's open files we can see that a lot of files of that user profile (and of other users, too!) are shown as open - all with read option and no apparent locks.

When user1 loggs off these locks stay! Manually closing the open files on the file server allows the user to log on to the rds servers normally. Subsequent logging off may or may not create those stale open file handles.

We have no clue as to when these enormous amount of open file handles (we talk about 100s of files per user) happen. It seems to be at random and not hitting every user.

Has anyone ever met a similar problem? Or at least an idea on how to prevent logged off users to still have open files on the file server?

Any answer pointing in the direction of a possible solution or source of this problem is greatly appreciated!

Windows Server 2012 R2 - File System unable to remove/ list a folder content - 1 Million file +

Hey there,

right now there is no other way then ask some other technicans concerning the issue just popped up.

Error info:

There is a folder which contains log files of a McAffee Antivirus Management Server.

The McAffee service is writing log files which are not that large at all. May about 1Mb each.

... unfortunately there are +1.000.000 logfiles right now. Just ended the dir indexing after 7 days.

To remove the folder is impossible. Also tried it with a bunch of powershell and CMD commands. There is no error message by the OS even.

At least I just don't want to setup the whole server completely new.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Lukas
