Consolidation of Storage Space

$

Hello,

I have a PowerEdge T420 server running Windows server 2008 R2 with all the HW & SW updates to date, however, we changed what we store on the server and thus have several drives on it which are sparsely occupied. We want to CONSOLIDATE all these drives into one large drive or volume.

Can anyone point me to some links containing the pertinent instructions?

Thanks,

Server 2016, Storage Replica, Windows Search alternative

Hello there

I'm running a small POC for one of my customers with 2 Windows Server 2016.

The main idea is to provide an active-passive File Server Cluster.

The servers are nodes in a stretched Failover Cluster. Both are located at different sites.
Storage Replica is activated and is running fine.
File Server Role is activated and the SR Disks are assigned to it.

Failover works as expected. So far so good. I love the new Storage Replica Feature.

I would like to run this cluster as a normal File Server.
The users are used to the Windows Search feature. On the old File server, they had running the standard Windows Search indexing Service. Worked pretty good for the 3TB of Data.

I tried to configure Windows Search. But as you might know, Windows Search is not allowed in a Windows Failover Cluster. If you try to start a Windows Failover Cluster Node with this service running, the service will be set to disable. I have no clue how an indexing software should work with SR as the disks are only present to one server node (Source) only.

Now my Question: Is there a way to provide the same windows search functionality for the user without windows search indexing service? Do I have to use a third party software? What are you guys using?

I'm looking forward to hear about your experiences.

Thx for your time

Greetings

Martin

BitLocker, ReFS, and Storage Spaces

Hi everyone,

I'm configuring an installation of Windows Server 2016 Essentials. Ideally, I'd like to put into production a Storage Space based on ReFS which is encrypted with BitLocker. Before continuing down this route, I have a few questions:

  1. Has the issue of volume corruption when using the combination of BitLocker and Storage Spaces been resolved?
  2. When creating a mirrored (2 x 3TB) Storage Space based on ReFS, a new and empty volume (i.e. no previous or current data written) uses approximately 43GB of space. Why is this?
  3. When creating a new Storage Space, is the default value the maximum value (without over-provisioning or under-allocating)?

Any clarification will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

SOFS Cluster in WS2016

Hello,

I am currently in the process of setting up a new storage system and as a result of the WS2016 release some questions have popped up.

I could setup the system using my old settings from 2012R2, but after the release of 2016 some new features were added (Storage Spaces Direct) or updated (eg ReFS) and I would like to incorporate the available features if possible.

First the current HW:
4x JBOD enclosures (each with 3 HDDs (10K) & 1 SSD = 12 10K + 4 SSD)
2x Windows Server 2016 Server attached to JBOD using mSAS

Both servers are in a "Failover Cluster" and will later on host virtual machines using Hyper-V Cluster, where the storage is located on CSV volumes.

I want to setup a Pool using all JBOD drives using Storage Spaces (not Direct!). The Virtual disk resiliance should be a Two-Way Mirror.

Now here are my questions, I hope someone can help me with them:

1. Should I use tiering with the SSDs, because a collegue recommended just using the UsageType "Journal" for the SSDs and the will automatically work as a cache or even just setting the WriteBackCache to a custom size. I always thought that the Jounaling will only work on Parity "Virtual Disks"?

2. Should I use ReFS in this case, or should I stay with NTFS? Is ReFS even supported on CSV? I read that if I decide to use ReFS all access will be in "Redirected Mode" and I cannot leverage DirectIO is that correct. The technet articel about "Supported Scenarios for ReFS" did not provide sufficient information on this matter.

3. If I use ReFS will I have "Real-Time Tiering" or is this only in combination with Storage Spaces Direct?

I hope someone can help me with these questions as a could not find a satisfactory answer online.

Thanks in advance Paul

VM Domain Controller VHDX's on CSV tiered virtual disk with Write-Back Cache

Am I going to see corruption doing this? Is it supported? As soon as I promoted a new VM to a DC I got warned and shut it down just in case. The Tiered CSV virtual disks w/ write-back cache ARE writing through to disk - the SSD tier - right?

Error 0x8007003B unexpected network error at copying big files on a DFS share

Hi,

i have a problem with some of my DFS-shares.

The issue i noticed the first time today.

if i copy a big file (> 100mb) on my DFS share (domain-based namespace) i've got the error 0x8007003B unexpected network.

But not alle shares on the same server has the issue.

if i copy the big file direct on the server share (\\servername1\share1) the copying process works without any error's.

My server is a Windows Server 2008 Standard x64 and the Client is Windows 7 Prof. x64.

I've tried to copy big files from different operating systems (win 2k3 & win xp) and the were also no problem.

can somebody help me?

thanks for your help :)

best regards

Michael

DFSRDIAG says "in sync" but its definitly NOT!

Hi Community,

I have two Fileservers (one old 2008 R2 Machine) and a new 2012 R2. We've setup a replication-Group and let DFSR perform the initial Sync (Fast Connection in one datacenter). The initial-sync was done in ~ 1 day. When I ran dfsrdiag it says "No Backlog - member <SOURCE> is in sync with partner <DESTINATION> so we switched DFS to the new Fileserver and took the old one in readonly.

Now the users report, that some folders are empty but they see data on the old machine. I verified and they are right! What the hell is going on?! DFSRDIAG still says "in sync" but it isnot. I cannot trust the Microsoft-diagnose-Tools any longer!!!

What can I do to run a manual re-sync?

Help Eliminating Events Produced From Windows Folders With Default Auditing Enabled

$

I am setting up file server auditing on a Server 2012r2 system for the first time and I had a question about reducing/eliminating the events produced from Windows folders that automatically have auditing defined on them.

Current Setup

I enabled file server auditing by setting Audit File System to Success under Computer Configuration | Policies | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Advanced Audit Configuration | Object Access

Behavior

After enabling file system auditing, I noticed that the Security log started to log these 3 events periodically:

Event ID: 4656
Security ID: SYSTEM
Description: A handle to an object was requestedProcess Name: C:\Windows\CCM\CcmExec.exeObject Name: C:\Windows\servicing
Frequency: 3 events every 10 minutes

Event ID: 4656Security ID: SYSTEMDescription: A handle to an object was requestedProcess Name: C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exeObject Name: C:\Windows\WinSxS\FileMaps\<several subfolders>
Frequency: This event and the event below produces about 650 events within about 1 second about every day.

Event ID: 4663Security ID: SYSTEMDescription: An attempt was made to access an object
Process Name: C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe
Object Name: C:\Windows\WinSxS\FileMaps\<several subfolders>Frequency: This event and the event above produces about 650 events within about 1 second about every day.

Upon checking theC:\Windows\servicing and C:\Windows\WinSxS\FileMaps folders, I see that they have Auditing enabled by default.

Questions

  1. Has anyone attempted to remove auditing from the Windows foldersC:\Windows\servicing or C:\Windows\WinSxS\FileMaps?
  2. Is there a cleaner way to not log these default audit defined folders (the auditing I will be doing will be on a separate data volume on the server and not on the C drive)?  Or is the general approach to allow the events to be logged and then use the filter option (or a log management tool) to ignore these entries?

Thanks!

Automatically revoking write permissions from a shared folder in Windows Server 2012 R2/10

Hi everybody,

Good day to you!!

I want to share a folder with other window's users (Let's say Server 2012 or Win 10) on my network and want to give them only write permission for a certain period of time (Let's say 4 hours). Is there any way so that the write permission is automatically revoked and user's won't be able to write anything in the shared folder after 4 hours?

Do I need to write a script or is there any straight forward way?

Best,

/ Karim

Permissions... Write-only not working.. Must grant Modify access

$

Hi, all:

I am attempting to give employees write-only access to a share I've created, but for whatever reason, they're unable to write to said folder... However, if I give them modify access, they're able to write to it then.

I created OU folders by project (we're a construction company), and I've got a write and modify AD group for each project. I'd like to give just write-only to some people, and modify (delete/change) access to others. Please let me know if I'm not following something here... Advanced permissions on the shared folder itself has full access, and the permission on the share has read to users (of the "read" or read/write" options)...and I mean the SHARE itself, not the subfolders I'm attempting to add the ACL to.

Thanks,

Aaron

DFSR replicating between Server 2008R2 standard and Server 2016 standard?

$

Hi Everyone

Currently all of our file servers are running Server 2008R2. We rely heavily on DFSR to have local copies of the core network shares in the main international offices for performance (c. 1TB each).

I'm now at the point where I have some old hardware to replace and am considering moving to Server 2016 so it can run for the next several years without being touched. The replication hub is in the USA replicating out as far as China.

My Questions are

1) Can Server 2016 happily DFRS replicate with a central replication hub Server running 2008R2?

2) If Yes, can this work with only 2008R2 domain controllers (2008R2 forest functional level running)?

Thanks in advance

Mark

Applying Permissions to a select section of the file tree

$

Hi Guys and Girls,

So I am the 'IT Guy' (generous use of the term) at my small business. We have a basic windows server that contains our clients and the job folders for each client. The Tree is as follows:

    ->Level A - Project Control

          -> Level B - Client 1

          -> Level B - Client 2

                 -> Level C - Client 2 Job 1

                 -> Level C - Client 2 Job 2

                          -> Level D - Folder 1

                          -> Level D - Folder 2

                          -> Level D - Folder 3

                          -> Level D - Folder 4

                 -> Level C - Client 2 Job 3

                 -> Level C - Client 2 Job 4

          -> Level B - Client 3

Basically I want to apply permissions so basically no-one (aside from a special user-group called 'file control') can create/delete/move files at level A B or C. Everyone should have normal permissions for files at all levels and folders level D and below.

Is there a way to set permissions so they only apply to a certain level of subfolders? The issue is that for one client there is over 700 folders at Level C. So if I apply the permissions to 'folders and subfolders' it propagates all the way down, and then I would have to change the permissions to the 700 folders at level  C so all the folders at level D are correct.

With the normal permissions procedure I cannot see a way that I wouldn't have to either manually apply permissions to Level D and below or Level C and above.

Can this be done with a script or batch file?

Is there a way to apply different folder permission on one user account?

Thank you.

FSRM Notification Variable

I'm currently enabling folder quota managment from the FSRM role on Windows Server 2012 R2.  I have a limit set on the home directories, so the enduser doesn't go over this amount.  I have notifications set for the administrator, which works.  The issue is when I enable notifications for the 85% threshold, the enduser never gets any notification.  I have tested on myself with the same results.  Nearest I can figure is that the username for the login is not the same as the email address.  Our usernames are shorten to 8 characters, which is from the days of old.  Is there a workaround for this issue?

2012r2 DFSR Not reporting for single server

$

Our environment has several domain controllers, including one that is in a vendor's managed cloud. We just recently removed the last 2008 server and have now updated our domain and forest levels to 2012r2. One of the first things I want to do is move from FRS to DFS. I'm following the blog post at (blogs.technet.microsoft.com/filecab/2008/02/08/sysvol-migration-series-part-1-introduction-to-the-sysvol-migration-process/) for this. I've gotten to the point of running 'dfsrmig /getmigrationstate' repeatedly to make sure all DCs are showing as 'Prepared'. It's been at least 5 hours and all but one of our DCs is done.

As I'm sure you've guessed, it's the one in our vendors managed cloud. Per their requirements, it has to be behind their firewall and we have to specifically request ports to be opened on an as needed basis. I've looked through all of the technet articles and am fairly sure that we have all of them open between this remote server and two of our DCs (including the PDC).

For reference, here are the ports that are opened:

25	TCP
42	TCP
67	UDP
137	TCP
137	UDP
138	UDP
139	TCP
636	TCP
2535	udp
3269	TCP
9389	TCP
135	TCP
389	Tcp
389	UDP
3268	TCP
88	TCP
88	UDP
53	TCP
53	UDP
445	TCP
445	UDP
5722	TCP
464	TCP
464	UDP
123	UDP
1024-5000	TCP
1024-5000	UDP
49152-65535	TCP
49152-65535	UDP

I've gone onto the offending server and confirmed the following:

  • C:\windows\sysvol_DFSR exists and is populated
  • I can ping both DCs from this server without issue
  • DFSRDiag /pollad to either of the DCs comes back as 'Operation Succeeded'
  • Sites/Services has replication links created b/t the two DCs and the problem server
  • repadmin /show repl shows successful for all queries
  • DFSDiag /testdcs is successful on the two DCs it can reach, errors out on the others
  • Running repadmin /syncall /AeD fails for the DCs it can't see. Succeeds for most of the tests...
  •    PDC response for 'syncall' is "(network error): -2146893041 (0x8009030f): The message or signature supplied for verification has been altered."
  •    Other DC response for 'syncing partition' is "(network error): -2146893041 (0x8009030f): The message or signature supplied for verification has been altered."

For all intents and purposes, I believe that the replication has taken place, but the server can't report it back to the rest of the domain.

When I go to ADSIEdit per this solution (social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/7730f4e2-c5f2-4c21-bcde-c30c5d25ef9a/migrating-sysvol-to-dfsr-one-server-stuck-when-using-getmigrationstate-but-it-looks-ok-locally?forum=winserverDS) on the PDC, I do not see any folders under 'OU=Domain Controllers\CN=OtherDC'. However, when I look on the problem DC, I do see the folders that should be there.

I've also checked in the DFS management console, but this problem server doesn't show up in there as part of the replication

I did just run 'DFSRMig /getglobalstate' and it shows 'Current DFSR global state: 'Prepared"

My question(s) are: What could be blocking the remote server from reporting its DFSR status to the PDC? Since I can see it replicated and the globalstate is 'Prepared', can I go ahead and move forward with the migration?

DFS Replication Fails - Reports Disk Space Low, but it isn't

I'm new to DFS but have inherited managing my new employer's remote site replication and all the errors it's been having since last year. I've increased the Staging folder sizes, where required, to meet or exceed Top32 on the 14 remote servers and our corporate DFSR hub server. I have also calculated the remote server replicated folder size, Staging quota, and ConflictandDeleted folder sizes so I could adjust the size of the 14 volumes holding the replication folders on our hub server to accommodate the calculated sizes plus 20%.

So far most replication groups have started replicating again with very few, or no, errors. Of course there is always one problem child, and the one I have is driving me nuts. I've had to increase the hub server volume size for remote site"C" a couple additional times to get replication started again and each time it will work for a couple days before throwing the disk space error again.

                            SERVER C            HUB SERVER
                             Size / Free          Size / Free
Physical Disk         1.53 / 1.19 TB    205 / 54 GB
Replicated Folder               130 GB          148 GB
Conflict&Deleted              5 / 0 GB       5 / 2.5 GB
Staging                          35 / 3 GB      35 / 18 GB

Also, I followed the process outlined in this article Implementing Content Freshness to kickstart the replication of this folder and it seems to have done the job other than the issues with folder size. The hub server is configured as a read-only partner and I don't understand why the replicated folder on the hub server continues to grow larger than the source member of the replication group rather than match the size.

I greatly appreciate any help/guidance you may provide with resolving this,

Frank

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

$

0

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
 Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?
