Howto migrate Work Folders server?

$

Hi,

I have some servers running 2012 R2 with active Work Folders feature. They will be replaced by 2016 machines. Is there some howto regarding the migration of Work Folders feature?

The sync shares are created with file access only for the users itself. Work folders URL is distributed by GPO to the clients and setup is enforced. Clients are Windows 10 1709 and 1803.

Before Windows 10 1803 the clients had all the data and changing the sync share was easy. Clients were just resynchronizing their files to the new, empty share. Now with the new features, most files stay on the sync share server and only a few files are offline available.

So how do I handle this?

Thanks, Ingo

Redirected Folders on DFS Share with Primary Computer - Files are synching on remote server when connecting through RDP session

We have Redirected Folders configured on DFS shares with Primary Computers assigned to each user. Many of these users use RDP sessions into other servers to do some of their work and for some reason offline files are synchronizing on those servers as well as their assigned primary computers. Any idea what could cause this?

Caching in Storage Spaces Direct

I am evaluating a possible storage solution based on Storage Spaces Direct.
On page https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/understand-the-cache I read that I can use different kind od SSD disks for caching.
Is there any way to use RAM for even more efficient caching?

DFS namespace migration from SMB / CIFS on Netapp

$

Hi All

I am trying to figure out a way to deal with shortcuts pointed to a smb share when migrating to a namespace. My org has run shared folders on a netapp for a long time, we are finally migrating to DFS with a namespace. Everything has gone pretty well with one exception. We still have some shortcuts that run printer mapping scripts on startup. Every computer has one :/ all 400. In the past I would have just used a dns alias for the old file server to the new file server and change the old servers name. This would give me two benefits, if anyone mapped to the old server they would still work and any scripts and whatnot pointed there would still work. I cant do that with a namespace due to the additional directory layer i.e. \\server\share vs \\domain name\namespace\share. Any ideas on how to update that shortcut on 400 PCs? Or redirect requests to the old servername to the new namespace?

DFS upgrade - Windows 2000 to Windows 2012 R2, cross Domain

Hi there,

Is it possible to do a direct migration between a Windows 2000 DFS environment in one domain (Domain A), which presently holds ALL DFS configuration and also hosts the NAS-connected data, to a Windows 2012 R2 environment (Domain B) on a different domain, with a two way trust established.

Are there are schema differences, DFS version setup or other gotcha which needs special consideration?

Additionally, at present users from Domain B can access the Win2000 DFS namespace via the trust and a set of security groups replicated via Quest Migrator between Domain A to Domain B.  If after the DFS migration Domain A is decommissioned and the shares with the data brought into Domain B, what access permissions issue could potentially be encountered?

This is a new environment for me and still picking up how it's all configured, but would appreciate any thoughts on the above in the meantime.

Martin

Setup Storage Replica failover

Hi All,

I've setup a Storage Replica partnership that is working successfully and in Synchronous mode.  However I am unsure how to set the destination drive as a failover.

The use case is that we would like the replication drive to failover to the destination drive in case the Replication host fails.  Is there a way to do this?

Also when trying to access the replicted destination drive it shows as not accessible "The device is not ready", is this normal?

Thank you

Storage sync and Replication with failover on two seperate Amazon EC2 servers

Hi,

I am looking to setup syncing and replication of two drive on two instances of Windows Server 2016 Data center edition hosted on two seperate Amazon EC2's.

I would like to have one drive sync and replicate to another drive on a different EC2 instance as a failover.  The second instance would take over in case the first instance fails.  I am not sure if Storage Replica can do this.

Thanks for the suggestions

Error when creating new share in Clustered File Server - The resources must be online on the same node for this operation

I'm trying to create a new share on a Windows 2012 R2 failover cluster but no matter what  I try (Add File Share in Failover Cluster Manager, new share in fsmgmt.msc managing the cluster NetBIOS name and FQDN) I always receive the error "The resources must be online on the same node for this operation".

The setup:

Two Windows 2012 R2 nodes making a failover cluster, using a Dell PowerVault MD3220 shared storage. The File Server role a has dedicated LUN which appears as the S drive on both nodes (though it is only ever online on the active node). The share I'm trying to create is to a folder that exists on the S drive.

The File Server role has the following resources, according to Failover Cluster Manager. All are shown as online.

  • Server Name: CFS1 (with its associated client access point IP)
  • File Server: \\CFS1
  • Storage: The dedicated LUN

The weird thing is, the File Server role is already running several shares that were created when the cluster was first built - all on the same S drive. All of the shares are members of a domain DFS (not sure if that's relevant)

The structure on disk is

S:

| - DfsShares

    | - Folder1

    | - Folder2

    | - and so on...

Folder1 is already shared in the cluster, but Folder2 is causing the error (actually, to be accurate, there are 10 folders already shared and two are causing the error)

Any ideas what resources it thinks aren't online - or where to look for more information?

NTFS warnings and errors - ID 57 and 137

Hi! since the 4th of january I've seen NTFS errors 57 and 137 in the event log of one of our servers.
Saying:
57 - The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur
137 - The default transaction resource manager on volume \\?\Volume{da4147bc-b6e1-11e5-aea0-005056af0080} encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

I've seen other have the issue here in the forums, and I found an article saying this can be ignored.

But does anyone know why they suddenly can appear? Everything was fine until the fourth at 6 PM

The volumes mentioned in the 137 warning, cannot be found on the server.

Why is a volume mentioned that is not on the server? How is the value created for a volume that is not there?

Is there no solution to this?

Hi,

When deploying Windows Server 2016 work folders how can we deploy client settings via group policies if the domain controller is Windows Server 2003 R2. It has settings only for Offline Folders.

Storage Spaces Disk Failure Notifications

$

Hi there,

I work with backup & recovery systems on a daily basis & am always seeing disk failures - it comes with the turf, high data turn over means more wear & tear... Now Server 2012 I'm a big fan on & I thought "Why not give Storage Spaces a chance"... At present I'm facing a critical flaw... notifications of disk failures... I can't see any easy out-of-the-box solution in place.

Is there something I'm missing? All I want is email notifications in the event of a disk failure & also some visible notification when I log into the server to say "Hey... dead hard drive, fix your $"

I don't want to have to rely on the Hot Spares & the manual checks to catch something as critical as disk failures.

Kind Regards,

Si

Offline Files

Hallo,

Can anyone tell me how the CSC cache is loaded ? What happens when it is full ? Is there a Round Robin strategy for populating the cache (this is, in case of full cache, the oldest files are dropped and replaced by newer) ?

Is it a good strategy to purge the cache at log-off time ?

Issue with roaming profiles

$

Hi all,

I am currently in the middle of a course learning about roaming profiles. I have set up a domain controller (domcontroller01) and a client machine (ClientPC01) on VirtualBox VM. I have also created a domain (DG). I also setup a security group on Active Directory named "Roaming Profiles" and assigned these to the users.

This is my first time setting up roaming profiles and straight away encountered an issue despite going through the microsoft guide on how to deploy roaming profiles and the course videos.

The initial log on to a user is completely fine. Nothing is having issues at this point. But when I log off, that is when I start to have issues. It takes about 10 minutes to log off even though no data is on the profile at all. Then it says my profile was not completely synchronized, please check event log. I did and below is the sort of errors I am getting:

Windows cannot copy file \\?\C:\Users\test1\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\UPPS\UPPS.bin to location \\?\UNC\domcontroller01\profiles$\test1.V6\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\UPPS\UPPS.bin. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights.

 DETAIL - Access is denied.

I have checked permissions to \\domcontroller01\profiles$ ::

DG\Roaming Profiles (Group) = Special Permissions - List folder / read data & Create folders / append data (this folder, subfolders and files)

DG\Administrators (Group) = Full control (this folder only)

I have checked permissions to \\domcontroller01\profiles$\test1.V6 ::

DG\Test1 (user) = Full Control

I have also checked the profile tab on active directory and the below is inputted:

\\domcontroller01\profiles$\test1

Can anyone help me resolve this problem please? didnt really expect this straight away after creating and setting up roaming profiles!

Thanks,

Dan

The operation you selected will convert the selected basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s) on Windows Server 2008 - consequences?

Hello There,

I have File Print Server running Windows Server 2008 Std SP2. Server has 2 basic disks"Disk 0" (RAID-1) and "Disk 1" (RAID-5).
On "Disk 0" I have used all available space for "System (C:)" volume, which is from where the server boot.
On "Disk 1" I currently have 3 simple volumes (primary partitions) D: (408GB), F: (250GB) and S: (24GB), on all of which I have simple file structures (shared to users). I shrinked 150GB from F. This Space is allocated at the moment. As i am running out space on D drive ( last 3GB is being utilized at the moment) and I want to extend D drive with this 150GB unallocated space. These volumes where created in that order (D:, then E: and finally S:).

I thus (in Disk Management) select the volume, right-click and select "Extend Volume".
This brings up the "Extend Volume Wizard", I click Next> enters the amount of space in MB (e.g. 157038), click Finish.
I then get a "Disk Management" warning stating:

"The operation you selected will convert the selected basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s).
If you convert the disk(s) to dynamic, you will not be able to start installed operating systems
from any volume on the disk(s) (except the current boot volume). Are you sure you want to continue?:

A. Can I be absolutely certain this does not impair the service/functionality of the server, i.e. that it continues to function, booting it's OS from C: as well as maintaining is file structures? because i stated above, I have shared folders mapped to users from this D drive... and i don't want to lose any data.

DFS, Offline Files, Access Denied

Hey,

We have a very random issue where Offline Files sometimes flags up 'Access denied' and users can only see the local cache copy of network drives.

After a few reboots it just seems to fix itself. We actually set slow-link mode too and this made me think it was some of the issue, but the offline files operational log doesn't not show anything untoward.

For a user that had 'access denied' yesterday, but is totally fine today:

Hello,

Recently we start obtain the following error (System.IO.IOException: The parameter is incorrect), accessing fileshare server, we already search for errors in the Event Viewer in both Machines but there is not any errors. The only error that we have, was written by the application on the application log file.

Can anyone give me some lights on what should be my next steps, what can I search or diag next?

Setting Permissions for Administrative Shares - From Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows 7

Hi,

I have a corporate Inventory application installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 and I need to deploy some Agents to Windows 7 Desktops.

This app requires having access to C$ and Admin$ in the Desktops, from the Server. Also the agent is installed in C:\Windows\ from a BAT Script but can be installed in C:\ or Program Files too. The agent also comes with a Service related with the processes being executed when the agent is running.

Usually I can deploy the agents from the server using Local (Desktop) or Domain Admin Account, but this time our AD Admin told me he can't provide that kind of access. It has to be a non-Admin account. When I ask him what is the right permission / mapping I should have to request to Security team in order to install the agents, he doesn't know! (It seems is not a legit AD Admin ¬¬)

In Windows 2003 I used to mitigate that scenario by requesting Power Users to our AD Admin, but that permission is not able in Windows 2008. What kind of permissions do I need to request in the Windows Server 2008 R2 account, for viewing Admin Shares in the Desktops and installing the agent remotely? Also I understand User Access Control (UAC) plays some role here (I don't know if I have to request disabling UAC in the Desktops for installing the agent, for instance)

Best regards,

Alejandro

Mirror Accelerated Parity Support

Hi All,

I'm looking into what options I have around using Mirror Accelerated Parity in a home lab environment...
From what I understand, this is currently only supported in Storage Spaces Direct; meaning multiple servers... Is there a way to set this up with a single server?

Also, what are the chances of this feature being supported on Win10 Enterprise or Win10 Pro for Workstations?

Cheers
Jason
