SYSVOL cannot be accessed with a short UNC name.

The DNS domain name is: domain.consto.com

The Pre-windows name is: netname

\\domain.consto.com\sysvol works fine. \\domain\sysvol does not work. It keeps asking for credentials to access it with an access is denied.  No matter what you try, it doesn't work.  "netname\administrator" does not work.

I dfs-share on the domain controllers works file with \\domain\{dfs-share}.  So why does this work and "netlogon" and "sysvol" not work?

There is nothing in the security log.

Also server 2016 is now the domain controllers and the 2008 servers were removed.

Any ideas why this happens?

Network is set to domain but traffic being blocked as public network

Hi all.

I have a fresh install of Windows Server 2016 that's been added as a member to a Windows SBS Server 2011 domain. It has not been promoted or anything else. It has 2 network interfaces where one is connected to the rest of the network and it's been configure with static info. Network connectivity works fine in both directions. All updates have been installed as of yesterday (July 17, 2018). I created a share on this server that although accessible from the primary domain controller other computers on the network are refused.

In troubleshooting I've found that if I drop the firewall the share is accessible. When the firewall is back on it shows up as connected to a domain network and I've gone into the firewall and made sure that file and print sharing are allowed but still can't connect with the firewall up.

Another troubleshooting step was to turn on firewall logging for dropped packets on all three networks and creating a different name for each of the logs e.g. public networks firewall log is named "publicfirewall" and the private network firewall logs are named "privatefirewall". After enabling the firewall and trying to connect to the share the only log that's getting any entries is the one for the public network even though the NIC connected to the network comes up as in the domain network.

This is a basic install with very basic roles and/or features installed. Can anyone provide any guidance for fixing this?

Thanks

Joe

We have 5 physical sites, for example A,B,C,D and F.  We have DFS server targets in Site A and Site B.  Is it possible to have Sites C and D clients refer to the DFS target in Site B and Site F clients refer to the DFS target in Site A?

Hi,

I am looking to setup syncing and replication of two drive on two instances of Windows Server 2016 Data center edition hosted on two seperate Amazon EC2's.

I would like to have one drive sync and replicate to another drive on a different EC2 instance as a failover.  The second instance would take over in case the first instance fails.  I am not sure if Storage Replica can do this.

Thanks for the suggestions

Windows Server 2012 SMB problems

Dear Guys,

I have a problem and no idea what to do, please help! One of our customers have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server, which has SMB1 feature installed and enabled because of some old scanner. They have ~15 client computers, most of them works correctly with the server's shared folders, but some of them is not.

Now I'm working on it remotely, making a VPN connection through SSTP and try to reach the server with it's IP address (\\192.168.1.5), after 15-20 seconds I got error code 0x80070035 on 1 client and 0x80004005 on 2 other clients. I'm trying to reach the server's shared folders with one of the custumers Windows 10 PC's (1803), and from their branch office server which is running Windows Server 2008 R2, and from my own Windows 10 PC (1803). None of them is a domain joined computer, however there're a few working, but not domain joined computers. SSTP connection is set on all of them used with the remotewebaccess.com certificate, connection works correctly, as some clients are working correctly through that and they can reach the shared folders.

We have other Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials servers with SSTP and file sharing, I had made some investigation yesterday. I'm connected to them by SSTP, tried to reach shared folders from my PC and all of them was working. Then I had downloaded an SMB test program which can test all of the SMB versions and found that all of these servers were successfully tested through VPN on every SMB versions, and our server in our network is successfully tested too. The program not resolves the problematic server's name by Netbios (it is enabled on all of the interfaces), and tries to test SMB1 and got a timeout, so it is not testing other SMB versions. I think it can be a problem with the enabled SMB1 protocol, which is the only difference with the tested and the problematic server. None of the others have SMB1 enabled.

If there's no other idea I'll try to remove it in the evening, but I have to try another solutions because they need to use SMBv1 and other clients are still working, so there should be a solution.

I have tried tons of registry hacks as forums mentioned for this error codes but nothing has changed. Do you have any new idea what to do?

2 File Servers - Windows Server Migration Synchronization

Hello,

I am working with a customer who needs to do Windows Server Migration Synchronization between his 2 web servers.

Can he just use DFS for file replication considering both VMs are in the same datacenter and same rack. Anything shall be collected from the customer's environment other than this? Any limitations?

Shall we proceed with this solution or we think of other knowing that Windows Server Standard 2016 is the OS of the 2 servers?

Thanks

Sharing violation on Server 2008 R2

When running on Windows Server 2008 R2, sometimes our service encounters the following problem accessing a file:

.... Win32 Error: CreateFile of document file <\\server\folder1\folder2\file.ext> failed. GetLastError returned: <32>, <The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process….>

The shared file resides on a dedicated Windows 2008 R2 file server, our service runs on a different application server, also under Windows 2008 R2 server.

Sysinternal’s Process Monitor on the file server shows this:

Date & Time     22.03.2018 16:39
Time of Day     16:39:15
Process Name    System
PID             4

Running ProcMon on the application server (on a different day):

Date & Time     12.03.2018 10:48
Time of Day     10:48:21
Process Name    ourservice.exe

Result          SHARING VIOLATION
Detail          Desired Access: Generic Read, Dis, Options: Synchronous IO Non-Alert, Non-Directory File, Attributes: N, ShareMode: None, AllocationSize: n/a

According to ProcMon there is no other process on any of the servers accessing the file around the time the problem occurs. Our service was able to open and close the file shortly before the problem occurs.

Last action before ProcMon shows the sharing violation succeeds:

There is a KB article that referes to a similar issue and a fix for Windows Server 2008 R2:

support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2625434

However, the fix cannot be installed on Window Server 2008 R2 (error during installation).

Is there any chance to dig deeper and find the cause of this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Andreas

Server Service and SMB

Delete DFS Member Server

Hi

I have 3 file servers running DFS (1 x Windows Server 2008R2 and 2 x Windows Server 2012).

I am removing/decommissioning the 2008 Server.

Each server was a Namespace server, serving identical Namespaces
Each server hosts identical DFS shares.

I have deleted the Namespace entry for the 2008 server, leaving the 2 x 2012 servers as the active Namespace servers.

The Namespaces are still visible from the 2008 server and the active Namespace servers are correctly shown.

On the 2008 server, I still see the replication groups Membership and Connections, correctly showing the 2 x 2012 servers.

My questions is, how can I remove the DFS configuration from the 2008 server?

What do I need to do to delete the view of the Namespaces and Replication Groups?

I want to delete DFS from this server without affecting the 2012 DFS operation

Any help/pointers would be appreciated please

regards
Dave

DFS Question what would be a best practice

Hi guys, I have a question. I'm looking for what a best practice would be (best performance / best practice / best support)

I have 2 sites which are connected via VPN.

I would like to set up a DFS between both sites but the two sites have 2 different domains.

My question is what would be the best way to set up a DFS.

Should I

A) Just join machine on site B to site A domain and create the DFS

B) Do a cross domain DFS which would require a two way domain trust I assume

C) Any other option I might not be thinking of

**Site A would be the master site and site B would be the replication in the event site A dies site B DFS would take over**

Thanks! :)

Howto migrate Work Folders server?

$

Hi,

I have some servers running 2012 R2 with active Work Folders feature. They will be replaced by 2016 machines. Is there some howto regarding the migration of Work Folders feature?

The sync shares are created with file access only for the users itself. Work folders URL is distributed by GPO to the clients and setup is enforced. Clients are Windows 10 1709 and 1803.

Before Windows 10 1803 the clients had all the data and changing the sync share was easy. Clients were just resynchronizing their files to the new, empty share. Now with the new features, most files stay on the sync share server and only a few files are offline available.

So how do I handle this?

Thanks, Ingo

SMBClient Errors: 30611 followed by multiple 30906

Hello,

I have researched online but could not find anything relevant. A hyper-v managed windows server 2016 instance is crashing and throws multiple events of:

"The IO operation at logical block address 0x###### for Disk 0 "

On the hyper-v host, after the VM has crashed there has been a pattern of a SMBClient 30611 error of:

"

Failed to reconnect a persistent handle.

Error: The account is not authorized to login from this station.

FileId: 0x200000E0265CBEE:0x20E000000A9
CreateGUID: {b3d6066e-563c-11e8-a949-0002c937dda1}
Path: \networked\path\to\instance.vhdx

Reason: 201

Previous reconnect error: STATUS_SUCCESS
Previous reconnect reason: The reason is not specified

Guidance:
A persistent handle allows transparent failover on Windows File Server clusters. This event has many causes and does not always indicate an issue with SMB. Review online documentation for troubleshooting information.

"

Followed by several 30906 errors:

"

A request on persistent/resilient handle failed because the handle was invalid or it exceeded the timeout.

Status: The transport connection is now disconnected.

Type: Write (and Read)
Path: \networked\path\to\instance.vhdx
Restart count: 0

Guidance:
After retrying a request on a Continuously Available (Persistent) handle or a Resilient handle, the client was unable to reconnect the handle. This event is the result of a handle recovery failure. Review other events for more details.

"

Then the server crashed. If someone has any ideas or could point me in a direction to recover other more logs that would be super.

Thanks!

Deduplication on Server 2016 only uses one core

$

Hello,

we use the deduplication-feature on a machine installed with server 2016 standard. One of the new features of server 2016 ist the multithreading ability. For me this sounds like the process of deduplication speeds up by using multiple cores...

Now we have setup up an test environment to check the performance increase (we use datadeduplication for backups and there are several TiB that need to be deduplicated every day), but there is no significant performance increase. The fsdmhost.exe runs with multiple threads, but in Ressourcemonitor it seems all the threads run on only one core - only one of the 8 core shows workload. The io usage of the diskarray is minimal, under 15%... so it seems, that the io-performance is not the bottleneck.

I've tried to adjust parameters for the job and the volume with no success: Job -Memory 100 -InputOutputThrottleLevel high/low -Cores 100 -Priority High and for the Volume -InputOutputScale from 0 over 10 and 24 to 36

What I'm doing wrong?

Hi, I am trying to do this migration but I am unclear on some of these articles. They all talk about a single domain. Our environment has a root and child domain. Do I need to do this on both parent and child domain or just the Parent domain. Went through all the steps and I am ready to go.
