Does it matter from which server I launch a file transfer over the network?

I was copying files over from one server to another from my client computer. I was wondering if it would be better (in terms of performance) to do it from one of the servers instead of from my client.

So to clarify, I am on computer A opening network share from computer B & C and moving files from B to C via the interface of A. Would it be better for instance if I log on to the desktop of computer C, then open the network share to B and move files like this?

I hope it's a bit clear my question :-)

Storage Spaces - Can't create Tiered disk with Maximum size

This problem really annoys me - and it seems like either a Windows bug or poor design.

Hopefully it's neither and it's just me :)

I have reproduced it in Windows Server 2016/2019 Datacenter

1) Create a Virtual Machine, install Windows Server Datacenter

2) Add multiple drives to the VM

3) Add multiple drives to a Storage Pool (make sure that you set MediaType to both HDD and SSD)

4) Try to create a Virtual Disk through the GUI (actually it fails in Powershell aswell). Make sure you set the Size to Maximum size.

This will fail and you will get an error saying you don't have enough resources but in fact you can just choose a lower size and it will work just fine. I tried to play around with the sizes and I think that the only problem here is that the "Maximum size" is calculated wrong thus given an error.

Storage replica - failover

We have a file cluster (FILECL1) in datacenter A, and a file cluster (FILECL2) in datacenter B.

FILECL1 is the active file cluster and, using Storace Replica, the data disk is replicated to FILECL2 for disaster failover.

So, in failover cluster manager (on FILECL1), I've added a role of type 'File Server', it has the name 'FILECLUSTER' and has some shares on it.

People can browse to \\FILECLUSTER and use the shares. If one node goes down of the FILECL1 cluster, no problems..

Storage is replicated to FILECL2 using Storage Replica (cluster to cluster). But how do you document/configure the disaster failover part?

I tried DFS, to create a DFS name that would span both clusters, but I couldn't get it to work. If FILECL1 goes down, the whole cluster, I need to change the direction of Storage Replica with a Powershell command, so that FILECL2 becomes the source and is readable, but, \\FILECLUSTER will still point to the FILECL1 cluster that's down .. I don't find any specific information, only that storage replica is awesome etc.. :) So what's the best way to make sure that users and applications don't need to navigate to another share name?

Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) How to create more than one pool

Would someone please provide detailed instructions, or a link to instructions, on how to create more than one Pool in S2D?

I have seen many requests, and responses, that it can be done, but no direction on how.

Thanks,

Max Dedup Volumes simultaneously.

Hello,

I have 3 volumes of 4TB each.  Each of them have a scheduled dedup job that runs at 6am.  When the schedule job starts at 6am they all run simultaneously.  But if I have to run a manual dedup job on a newly created 4th volume while the initial 3 volumes are in process of deduping,  the  job of the 4th volume goes into the queued mode.  It stays in queue until any of the previous volumes have been completed.  Now if i add the newly created 4th volume as a schedule dedupjob then all 4 volumes run at the same time without issues. Does any one know how to force start a dedup job without it being queued?

Thank you.

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections

$

Hi There,

Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm.  We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:

Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM

Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart.  The file server stops accepting connections.  During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping.  I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB.  A reboot of the server fixes the issue.

As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault.  Sadly yesterday it happened again.

The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:

SMB Server Event ID 551

SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled

and

SMB Server event ID 1020
File system operation has taken longer than expected.

Client Name: \\192.168.105.97
Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571
User Name: HHS\12J.Champion
Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5
Share Name: \\*\Subjects
File Name:
Command: 5
Duration (in milliseconds): 176784
Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000

Guidance:

The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.

I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.

Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?

Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.

Thanks

DFS, Offline Files, Access Denied

Hey,

We have a very random issue where Offline Files sometimes flags up 'Access denied' and users can only see the local cache copy of network drives.

After a few reboots it just seems to fix itself. We actually set slow-link mode too and this made me think it was some of the issue, but the offline files operational log doesn't not show anything untoward.

For a user that had 'access denied' yesterday, but is totally fine today:

The DNS domain name is: domain.consto.com

The Pre-windows name is: netname

\\domain.consto.com\sysvol works fine. \\domain\sysvol does not work. It keeps asking for credentials to access it with an access is denied.  No matter what you try, it doesn't work.  "netname\administrator" does not work.

I dfs-share on the domain controllers works file with \\domain\{dfs-share}.  So why does this work and "netlogon" and "sysvol" not work?

There is nothing in the security log.

Also server 2016 is now the domain controllers and the 2008 servers were removed.

Any ideas why this happens?

Anyone know a solution? I can take ownership but it gives me the same error.

Thanks,

Windows Server 2012 SMB problems

Dear Guys,

I have a problem and no idea what to do, please help! One of our customers have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server, which has SMB1 feature installed and enabled because of some old scanner. They have ~15 client computers, most of them works correctly with the server's shared folders, but some of them is not.

Now I'm working on it remotely, making a VPN connection through SSTP and try to reach the server with it's IP address (\\192.168.1.5), after 15-20 seconds I got error code 0x80070035 on 1 client and 0x80004005 on 2 other clients. I'm trying to reach the server's shared folders with one of the custumers Windows 10 PC's (1803), and from their branch office server which is running Windows Server 2008 R2, and from my own Windows 10 PC (1803). None of them is a domain joined computer, however there're a few working, but not domain joined computers. SSTP connection is set on all of them used with the remotewebaccess.com certificate, connection works correctly, as some clients are working correctly through that and they can reach the shared folders.

We have other Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials servers with SSTP and file sharing, I had made some investigation yesterday. I'm connected to them by SSTP, tried to reach shared folders from my PC and all of them was working. Then I had downloaded an SMB test program which can test all of the SMB versions and found that all of these servers were successfully tested through VPN on every SMB versions, and our server in our network is successfully tested too. The program not resolves the problematic server's name by Netbios (it is enabled on all of the interfaces), and tries to test SMB1 and got a timeout, so it is not testing other SMB versions. I think it can be a problem with the enabled SMB1 protocol, which is the only difference with the tested and the problematic server. None of the others have SMB1 enabled.

If there's no other idea I'll try to remove it in the evening, but I have to try another solutions because they need to use SMBv1 and other clients are still working, so there should be a solution.

I have tried tons of registry hacks as forums mentioned for this error codes but nothing has changed. Do you have any new idea what to do?

2 File Servers - Windows Server Migration Synchronization

Hello,

I am working with a customer who needs to do Windows Server Migration Synchronization between his 2 web servers.

Can he just use DFS for file replication considering both VMs are in the same datacenter and same rack. Anything shall be collected from the customer's environment other than this? Any limitations?

Shall we proceed with this solution or we think of other knowing that Windows Server Standard 2016 is the OS of the 2 servers?

Thanks

I'm having an issue with DFS on server 2008R2. DFS worked fine until recently, now when I try to add or remove folders from the namespace I get access is denied. I gave myself explict full control on the drive that hosts the file. Has anyone ran into this issue before that may be able to give some troubleshooting tips?

File server Shadow Copies drive

Hi there,

I have Shadow Copies configured. All data are on E drive, and Shadow Copies are on F drive. I have two question about the shadow copies drive.

1. When I check F drive, I can see that drive has been used, but when I click into that F drive, it is empty. Can anyone explain to me why? I asked this because I can restore files from the shadow copies drive, but didn't see anything when clicked into that drive.

2. If that shadow copies drive is full, how do I clean up it as there is nothing shows up when I click into that drive.

Thanks!

Greetings Microsoft Community,

This system is running windows 10 pro on a windows server 2016 domain. I have enabled the settings required in the GPO so that I should be able to use fingerprint sign on but it still doesn't allow me to set up fingerprint sign on. (Greyed Out)

Things I have tried:

.../Windows Components/Windows Hello For Business/ Use biometrics => Enabled

.../Windows Components/System/Biometrics -> Enabled

.../System/Logon/ Turn on convenience PIN sign-in => Enabled

.../Windows Components/Biometrics/ Allow domain users to log on using biometrics => Enabled

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Ike
