My client's file server is logging this error message every 20 minutes and I am baffled at what it could be.  I've ran CHKDSK successfully, but this error keeps coming up.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The Event is posted below:

ReFS corruption

A few weeks ago, I created a striped virtual disk using storage spaces on Win2K12R2 formatted in ReFS.  I copied a large amount of data to the disk with apparently no issues.  I am now finding problems and corrupted files in the new disk.  Files that apparently cannot be accessed or deleted from the ReFS disk.  "Error 0x80070143: A data integrity checksum error occurred.  Data in the file  stream is corrupt".  What gives?  This seems to be a pretty significant flaw.  I know that ReFS is supposed to have built in error detection and recovery hence the lack of chkdsk. Is there no way to scan the file system for errors and correct?  I can't even delete the bad file so obviously there is something wrong with the file system.  Any advice is appreciated.

Hyper-V over SMB3 problem

$

Hello.

I have a problem with my Hyper-V cluster.
It is simply a failover cluster with Hyper-V role consisting of two nodes. It uses SOFS share for VM storage.

SOFS is run by second storage failover cluster dedicated solely for this role. Storage cluster consisting of two nodes and shared iSCSI storage, disks added as CSV and SOFS shares are on them.

All Hyper-V and SOFS cluster nodes have dedicated 2x10G interfaces, so SMB3 multichannel is in place.
- SMBv1 removed
- NETBIOS disabled
- TCP timestams enabled "netsh int tcp set global timestamps=enabled"
- Enabled TcpAckFrequency and TcpNoDelay REG_DWORD 1 in HKEY LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\<SAN interface GUID>

Approximately every two weeks all VMs hang due to losing connection to SOFS share.

Symptoms:
- UNC address \\SOFS.INSIDE.LOCAL cannot be accessed from Hyper-V cluster nodes with error "The remote procedure failed and did not execute."https://i.imgur.com/ye69RKt.png
- SOFS share can be accessed by UNC address \\SOFS from Hyper-V cluster nodes
- SOFS share can be accessed directly by \\SOFS.INSIDE.LOCAL\SHARENAME from Hyper-V cluster nodes
- SOFS share can be accessed from any other servers by \\SOFS.INSIDE.LOCAL or \\SOFS

Known workaround: Reboot Hyper-V cluster nodes or only one of two nodes. Rebooting SOFS cluster nodes doesn't help.

OS: Windows Server 2016 everywhere, 2018-06 updates

Of course I can go back to directly connecting iSCSI storage to Hyper-V cluster, but in my case this dedicated SOFS storage cluster was in place to simplify Hyper-V and (in future) SQL cluster nodes setup. So I won't need to update storage array software on all cluster nodes (~20 nodes in future) when new version comes out and all storage array-host relationships will be only between two nodes and array for troubleshooting reasons.

I believe that problem is somewhere in SMB client-server relations.

I've already tried this in Hyper-V nodes "Set-SmbClientConfiguration -MaxCmds 32768" and on SOFS nodes "Set-SmbServerConfiguration -MaxThreadsPerQueue 64 -AsynchronousCredits 8192" but it didn't help. All other SMB settings are default.
From my point of view this setup looks pretty simple: Hyper-V running VMs with storage over SMB without any insane or special things.

Captured problem with procmon https://i.imgur.com/ewDDpL9.png
Captured problem with network monitor: https://i.imgur.com/gbVvrZm.png (with filter ProtocolName == "SMB2")
In this sample 10.10.10.101 - SOFS node #1 SAN interface 0  and 10.10.10.155 - HV node #5 SAN interface 0

Looks like problem in RPC over SMB communication via Server Service Remote Protocol(https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd303117.aspx) but I have no idea whats the problem there.

According to this blog post (https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/josebda/2013/10/30/automatic-smb-scale-out-rebalancing-in-windows-server-2012-r2/) type of access of Hyper-V servers to SOFS share should be considered symmetric because both SOFS nodes identically connected to SAN via iSCSI but I see a lot of 30814 events logged with 1 second interval first stating that share type is asymmetrichttps://i.imgur.com/LJ425BN.png and second stating that it is symmetrichttps://i.imgur.com/MnfxtDQ.png .
I can't find any documentation (except that blog post) about this behavior, and how SOFS determines type of share (symmetric/asymmetric).

Also in SMB witness client eventlog I can see a lot of events "Witness registration has completed." and "Witness Client received a share move request".
This events looks related, but I can't investigate further inside this SMB interaction.

Yes, we have got support case opened (118072618661320) but I can't get any response for more than two weeks now.

Extended REFS partition but new size/free space doesn't show in Explorer

We have a large ReFS partition on a Server 2012 R2 machine that we came close to running out of space on.  It sits on an LSI Raid-6 volume (which we have several dozen in production, never have issues with them).  We decided to increase the size and extend the volume.

We expanded the Raid volume, and after it completed the additional space showed up in Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Disk Management.  We extended the volume, and the space expanded successfully.  And this is where it gets weird....  When we go to Windows Explorer the new total space / free space values do not show up.  Nor do they show up in DiskPart.

We need to properly extend this volume, and with approximately 27 TB of data on the volume it's not feasible to move it somewhere else.  What can we do to have the new space configuration show up properly?  Please see below for an image of what I'm seeing.  Thanks!  Rick

Microsoft DFS Folder Access Issue

$

Hi,

We are planning to migrate Standalone DFS in Windows 2003 with Cluster Environment to Windows 2016 Cluster Environment.

We found in Windows 2003 DFS is configured like \\DFSNameSpace\Shared Folder\DFS links with Targets. But we can access Shared folder or links by \\DFSNameSpace\\DFS links.

After Configuring Windows Failover Cluster in Windows 2016 - We can only able to access Shared folder by \\DFSNameSpace\Shared Folder\DFS link not directly \\DFSNameSpace\\DFS links like windows 2003.

Users Drive mapped through AD logon Script like \\DFSNameSpace [Server name]\\DFS links [Shared Folder] but

UNC Path in windows 2016 for accessing DFS is \\DFSNameSpace\Shared Folder\DFS links - is this way designed to access ?

Regards,

Naveen.

SMB does not work with RRAS enabled

first of all . all setup was tested and worked awesome setup was

I7 4770k

8GB ram

gigabyte H97HD3 motherboard

Intel I350 t4

server 2016 std

then motherboard burned .. and we changed it . as well as full windows reinstall . new configuration is

I5 7500

Asus Q270M-c

8gb ram

Intel I350 t4 ( same card )

server 2016 std

server intended to perform as VPN+NAT for RRAs . and as file share .all worked fine with previous board . with new one . separately it works

RRAs works fine in any setup . no question there

SMB works ONLY with rras disabled .  if i enable rras even with smallest possible variant ( generic NAT ) .  SMD stops working after 2-3 min . after 2-3 min i can read contents of smb share . but  could not write or read ( technically i can . but speed  of that is so low . so explorer freeze .does not matter rras settings . even vanilla variant ( generic nat )  freeze smb .

1. smb version is 3.1 used

2. no load on cpu or ram while it hanged itself

3. if access share after drives spinned down ( sata link power management ) .disks immediately spins up . but no read/ write is made

4. rest of setting is default ..previous installation was with same settimgs and from same media .. but it worked !

runned out of ideas where try dig it

Cannot access shared folders

I have a fresh installed Windows 2008 R2 where i applied the SP1.

It is on a "non-domain" network where i need to share files.

I can ping from workstations but cannot see any share.

Tried disabling firewall.  I can connect with RDP to server and have an IIS running on it that users can access without problems.

Determine whether a request came directly to a share or via a DFS referral

$

So I have a reverse version of a question I see posted here quite often. I see a lot of people ask how to find out where a DFS referral is pointing them, or which server is being used, but what I would like to know is if there is a way to determine whether a request to a server came via a DFS redirect or not.

For example. Let's say you have a share on \\server1\share mapping toc:\share, and a domain DFS set up at \\contoso.com\share that has a folder target pointing to\\server1\share. When looking on the computer management for the server, I can see open files forc:\share.

But is there a way to determine whether a client accessed the file directly via\\server1\share\file.txt or via \\contoso.com\share\file.txt ?

Thanks!

Moving fileserver with folder redirection and offline files enabled not working as expected

$

Hello,

We need to change the fileserver where folder redirection files are currently hosted, lets call it Server1. We have also enabled offline sync for all these files (desktop, docs, pics etc). So files are now redirected to \\server1\userfiles\%username%. When I look at the computer CSC folder it shows one namespace "server1"

Now I've followed the following guide https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/folder-redirection/enable-optimized-moving  that says to enable "optimized" move of contents in offline caches. Well I did and then blocked my test user from accessing the fileshare so new files would stay in offline cache and not be synced to the server. I created some files to synced folders on the test computer. Then I robocopied the data to new fileserver "server2". Then changed the GP settings of folder redirection and offline files to reflect the new share. After that forced gpupdate on the computer, logged off and logged in.

All files that I created after blocking access to old share were gone. All files were online and the sync center started to download all the files to new offline cache. Now the CSC folder shows server1 and server2. It seems it is not renamed as said in the Microsoft guide. Is anyone else seeing this behavior and is there any alternative way to do this without risking data loss while doing the move? Also the "move contents to new location" setting wont work because there is like hundreds of gigabytes of data and login times would be hours.

DFSR move to new folder

Hello,

I have to move the DFSR folders from one drive to another. I have found a guide and another explaining how to do it. I have followed the guide - robocopy the files, move the share, compare the sizes, move the DFRS; but was getting thethis member is waiting for initial replication for replicated folder message. 4 hours later, as the message was still appearing, I have then run a command to

dfsradmin Membership Set /RGName:<replication group name> /RFName:<replicated folder name> /MemName:<primary member> /IsPrimary:True

elect the primary node and the replication began. As a primary I have used the node with the drive swap. When I came this morning, I noticed that there is a lot of data missing in the folder, about 350gb to be exact. I checked the DfsrPrivate folder and there is 2000 files in the ConflictAndDeleted. I have also checked the other 2 members, but there is not data there either.<o:p></o:p>

I need to move one more folder, but wit the data containg all users private info, so the last thing I want to do is loos the files.

I would like to know if there is something I have done incorrectly. Should’ve I selected a different primary node? If I run the command now to see the primary, there isn’t one again…

Also, what has happened to the data?

Thanks,

Peter

DFS Management Console Version / EOL

Hi,

I just want to know that does DFS have version history. In 2008 R2 DFS Management version we have is 6.0 and also same version is in 2012 R2.

Is there a way we could find out latest version or EOL..??

Any way to retain folder permissions copied from a location to a new destination?

$

Hello,

I have a strange request.  I don't think this can be done, but I thought I'd check with Microsoft first.

Customer is running a Windows 2012R2 Standard Server.

They have several templates saved as PDF and DOC in, for example: \\SERVER\Share\Folder\Templates.

They have custom permissions to the Templates folder and its contents.

Every time they get a new client, they want to save a copy of the Templates folder into

\\SERVER\Share\Clients\Client1\Templates or\\SERVER\Share\Clients\Client2\Templates

They would like the "Templates" folder to retain the permissions created in the\\SERVER\Share\Folder\Templates

The way I understand it, this can only be accomplished if you cut and paste.  Is there a way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.

Rudy

Deduplication status incorrect in server manager

$

Hi!

I have a 2-node Windows Server 2016 failover cluster set up as a file server.

Disks are SAN LUNS mapped as raw devices to the vmware virtual machine.

We have configured data deduplication on the volumes and it seems to work since we have gotten more free capacity on the volumes.

However, when looking in the server manager GUI it most of the time shows no deduplication status at all, and when clicking configure data deduplication the setting is shown as disabled. (The dedup information is visible there occasionaly, but it seems completely random if it shows it at all).

But when running the powershell command Get-DedupVolume it correctly displays the status and dedup beeing enabled.

(I was hoping to be able to post screenshots of server manager but for some reason I get the message that my account is not verified and no information on how to verify it). But I can at least post the output of the PS command.

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-DedupVolume

Enabled            UsageType          SavedSpace           SavingsRate          Volu
-------            ---------          ----------           -----------          ----
True               Default            1.36 TB              47 %                 G:
True               Default            3.47 TB              28 %                 E:
True               Default            1.52 TB              38 %                 F:

Anyone else got this problem with server manager? Is there a workaround?

Kind of annoying not to be able to trust the information shown. (I assume that PS is correct in this case).

Peter

Hi Guys

I have a 2 node file server cluster with iSCSI SAN as storage. I want to rebuild my nodes on new servers using Windows 2016.

Can I detach my SAN from the old cluster and reattach to the new cluster???

Would the NTFS permissions be maintained???

Any other concerns I should be aware off

Can't convert MBR to Dynamic (Not enough space). Trying to RAID1 primary disk.

Hi,

I seem to be getting this error when I attempted to convert my primary basic disk (C:) to dynamic so that it could be mirrored in a software RAID1 in Windows 10 Pro.  Primary goal here is to get my main drive mirrored WITHOUT having to reinstall the os.  (Pay no attention to the raid below setup, I was simply testing to see if it would work on 2 other disks).

I would be even willing to xfer the OS to the raid 1 I already set below it but mini partition tool doesn't seem to like dynamic disks for some reason?

see below for pic

We have mapped file server hard disk and thousands of files are accessing by users on daily bases.

From group policy we want to achieve the following task.

Read, Write, Modified, Delete files and folder audit.

Change of permission on files and folders audit.

Windows Server 2012 crash over SMB

$

I encounter an weird issue with Windows Server 2012. Whenever I copy any local exe file to a windows-base network drive, it will crash immediately and reboot.

However, when I copy these exe files to linux-base network drive, it works fine. I can also copy exe files from any network drive into this server without any issue as well. No issue copying doc files as well.

This happen after I restore this server from backup to another site and changed it's IP address (but not the hostname). I suspect that it's domain credential could be corrupted if not confused.

Work Folders - 0x800700e1 - Operation did not complete successfully because the file contains a virus or potentially unwanted software

$

We are seeing the above error for some clients. The laptop i am looking at at the moment is a fully patched (August updates) 1709 device.

It is running a third party anti virus application which is working fine and is fully patched and has the latest definitions, and thus Defender is not active.

The server is using 2012 R2.

As I came across other posts stating that the error code relates to specifically to Windows defender, so to rule that out i set the local GPO on the client to disable Defender and restarted the device but with the same Work Folders sync failure.

There is absolutely nothing in any client or server AV logs showing any problems, nothing is quarantined.

Can anyone please shed any light on the problem?

The logging for work folders is very poor, I cannot seem to find anything servers side - How can I enable some sort of debug logging to see which file is failing to sync?
