Server 2012 R2 Network share - search / indexing issue

$

Hello,

I have a network share the was moved from a Server 2008 R2 to a Server2012 R2 system. The issue is searching the network files on the new system. I can open 2 explorer windows, one to the old share, one to the new share and search, as an example, *.pdf. On the new share it will list, again for example, 4,000 files, when I search the old share the search returns 165,000 files. Indexing is on, the desired folders are selected, and I have already rebuilt the index several times. This has had absolutely no effect on the issue. **I will not rebuild it again because it takes 36-72 hours to complete** during this time all searching is disabled. This folder is search by multiple users daily. **If "rebuild the index" is your solution please don't bother posting.** For some workstation systems if they check the "Don't use index to search..." box in search options, search in the new network share will list 165,000 files. This does not work for all systems (only seems to work for Windows 10 systems). These folders have 2-way file replication enabled so they should be exact copies. It seems automatic indexing is not adding all of the files. Here is the question, how do Iforce windows to index specific folders and files. I have seen this issue reported in several posts across various Microsoft forums but I have not found a working solution.

I am not allowed to upload screenshots or I would have.

Net Use mapped drive permissions issue

I am using "net use" to temporarily map a drive.  The mapping works correctly and the drive can be accessed, however in trying to create a new folder on the mapped drive I receive an "Access Denied" error.

This is what I get when I check the permissions on the drive.  I am using the bk250233 account to map the drive and as shown I have Full Control permissions.

PS C:\> get-acl I:\ | FL -Force

Path   : Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\FileSystem::I:\

         GSC-IMAGESERVER\bk250233 Allow FullControl

What is causing this issue?  Is it possible to use "net use" with a specific set of permissions?

Network Error: Windows cannot access to \\10.2.0.12. Please contact your network administrator.

Before install Sophos Central Endpoint, user able to access the shared folder (\\10.2.0.12). After install with Sophos Central Endpoint, user cannot access the shared folder (\\10.2.0.12).

We suspect the issue from Sophos Central Endpoint, so we uninstall and remove all Sophos components from the server and reboot it. However, we still receive the same error message.

We have set firewall any to any and check the network all are working fine. We have escalate this issue to Sophos Support, during their remote session on the server, found the issue is not related to Sophos Central Endpoint.

Please advise. Thank you.

Hi,

How many workstations ( Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows XP ) can simultaneously  use mapped drives to a Windows server and have open files for read and write on those mapped drives (\\server\cdrive  ) F:

All my searches refer to simultaneous mapping of Remote Desktop, which I do not care.

"Open File - Security Warning" on domain-based DFS namespace-hosted shares

We recently migrated a large amount of departmental data from CIFS shares to Windows-based storage, and users are now being prompted to open and "unsafe" file when opening anything.

We've tried changing the integrity level through ICACLS on some files with no change. Is there not a way to resolve this through group policy? Any guidance would be welcome.

Specs are as follows:

Storage hosted on Server 2012 R2 Standard with DFS-N in 2008 mode. Storage replicated through DFS-R between two site.

Clients are predominantly Windows 7 Enterprise/Pro.

Any way to retain folder permissions copied from a location to a new destination?

Hello,

I have a strange request.  I don't think this can be done, but I thought I'd check with Microsoft first.

Customer is running a Windows 2012R2 Standard Server.

They have several templates saved as PDF and DOC in, for example: \\SERVER\Share\Folder\Templates.

They have custom permissions to the Templates folder and its contents.

Every time they get a new client, they want to save a copy of the Templates folder into

\\SERVER\Share\Clients\Client1\Templates or\\SERVER\Share\Clients\Client2\Templates

They would like the "Templates" folder to retain the permissions created in the\\SERVER\Share\Folder\Templates

The way I understand it, this can only be accomplished if you cut and paste.  Is there a way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Rudy

first of all . all setup was tested and worked awesome setup was

I7 4770k

8GB ram

gigabyte H97HD3 motherboard

Intel I350 t4

server 2016 std

then motherboard burned .. and we changed it . as well as full windows reinstall . new configuration is

I5 7500

Asus Q270M-c

8gb ram

Intel I350 t4 ( same card )

server 2016 std

server intended to perform as VPN+NAT for RRAs . and as file share .all worked fine with previous board . with new one . separately it works

RRAs works fine in any setup . no question there

SMB works ONLY with rras disabled .  if i enable rras even with smallest possible variant ( generic NAT ) .  SMD stops working after 2-3 min . after 2-3 min i can read contents of smb share . but  could not write or read ( technically i can . but speed  of that is so low . so explorer freeze .does not matter rras settings . even vanilla variant ( generic nat )  freeze smb .

1. smb version is 3.1 used

2. no load on cpu or ram while it hanged itself

3. if access share after drives spinned down ( sata link power management ) .disks immediately spins up . but no read/ write is made

4. rest of setting is default ..previous installation was with same settimgs and from same media .. but it worked !

runned out of ideas where try dig it

Replicated DFS with DFS folders

Hi,

I'm running into an issue which I hope to explain below.

We have an HQ and several branch offices that need rapid file access for certain applications.
The most common files are in several folder that are replicated between the offices.
One folder has specific project information that is used by the branch offices

This one folder is a DFS folder, underneath this folder are 200+ folder links. Every project folder is located on the local file server on the branch office that is used in.
These folders are not replicated as the common folders, because they share the files and multiple (traveling) people will have multiple files open.

When this files is replicated this sharing and the same file open by multiple people doesn't work. When accessing the fileshare on the central location everything is fine.
But when the share is opened from a branch office and it connects to the namespace server in the office, the project folder is empty

Deduplication status incorrect in server manager

Hi!

I have a 2-node Windows Server 2016 failover cluster set up as a file server.

Disks are SAN LUNS mapped as raw devices to the vmware virtual machine.

We have configured data deduplication on the volumes and it seems to work since we have gotten more free capacity on the volumes.

However, when looking in the server manager GUI it most of the time shows no deduplication status at all, and when clicking configure data deduplication the setting is shown as disabled. (The dedup information is visible there occasionaly, but it seems completely random if it shows it at all).

But when running the powershell command Get-DedupVolume it correctly displays the status and dedup beeing enabled.

(I was hoping to be able to post screenshots of server manager but for some reason I get the message that my account is not verified and no information on how to verify it). But I can at least post the output of the PS command.

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-DedupVolume

Enabled            UsageType          SavedSpace           SavingsRate          Volu
-------            ---------          ----------           -----------          ----
True               Default            1.36 TB              47 %                 G:
True               Default            3.47 TB              28 %                 E:
True               Default            1.52 TB              38 %                 F:

Anyone else got this problem with server manager? Is there a workaround?

Kind of annoying not to be able to trust the information shown. (I assume that PS is correct in this case).

Problem with windows explorer and network drive

Hi !

We have Hyper-V Windows 2016 server with some virtual servers (in domain). One from these virtual servers is backup server where we have Veeam Backup. Together with this server we have Synology DS916+(homegroup). Everything together work great, to one day, something went wrong and from that day we didn´t see Synology on network via windows explorer, but ping works, and open synology management via web browser works. Something what is interesting, connect to shared folders from local computer in the same network works (win 10). Connect to shared folders (synology) no works only from server ( Hyper-V and any virtual server). Veeam didn´t see synology ,too.

When we want connect to synology by virtual server, it come with error : "Windows cannot access \\ (synology name / IP address) Error code : 0x80004005 or 0x80070035

but when we want connect from Hyper V error is: "The semaphore timeout period has expired"

We try a lot of "solutions" but not works.

I am ready reply to your all questions.

Sorry for my bad english and thanks for all answers.

I have a fresh installed Windows 2008 R2 where i applied the SP1.

Tried disabling firewall.  I can connect with RDP to server and have an IIS running on it that users can access without problems.

Windows Server 2012 crash over SMB

I encounter an weird issue with Windows Server 2012. Whenever I copy any local exe file to a windows-base network drive, it will crash immediately and reboot.

However, when I copy these exe files to linux-base network drive, it works fine. I can also copy exe files from any network drive into this server without any issue as well. No issue copying doc files as well.

This happen after I restore this server from backup to another site and changed it's IP address (but not the hostname). I suspect that it's domain credential could be corrupted if not confused.

Hi there,

Sorry for my bad english.

I'm looking for informations about this function.

I have a windows server 2016 file server, with a specific drive for storing datas (say d:) and a specific drive for storing previous versions of files (say z:).

I can't find anywhere technical information about this, my questions are :

  1. When I put a file on data d:, and the "previous version" schedule run, does this copy the entire content of this new file to z: ?
  2. If yes, does this get compressed ? Because I did some tests on empty drives, and say with 6GB on data disk d:, I get approx 2GB of disk usage on z:
  3. If I select no limit for drive usage for previous versions, how is working the cleanup process when z: gets full ? Older snapshots are removed ?

Thanks for infos

Hello,

While attempting to enable ABE, I am getting an inconspicuous error:

The error is not clearly defined and there are no event logging corresponding to this issue. So I am bit perplexed to comprehend what exactly 'Expression evaluated to false' means? Any assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Horace

Update: Additionally, I am not able to apply any settings through the dialog, this appears to be a bug?

Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 Scan to Folder - Windows Server 2012 Error: Authentication with the destination has failed check settings

I have recently upgraded a clients servers to Windows Server 2012 & since doing so have lost the ability to scan to folder.

Both servers are domain controllers and previously on a 2008 domain controller I would have had to make the following change to allow scan to folder:
 Administrative Tools
 Server Manager
 Features
 Group Policy Manager
 Forest: ...
 Default Domain Policy
Computer configuration
 Policies
 Windows Settings
 Security Settings
 Local Policies
 Security Options
Microsoft Network Server: Digitally Sign Communications (Always)
 - Define This Policy
 - Disabled

However I have applied this to the Windows 2012 server but am still unable to scan, possibly due to added layers of security in server 2012. The error on the scanner is Authentication with the destination has failed check settings.
I have also tried the following at the server:
Policies -> Security Policies
Change Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level to: Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients and uncheck the require 128 bit.
Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers and uncheck the require 128 bit
I have created a user account on the server for the ricoh and set this in the settiings of the Ricoh and verified everything is correct.

Are there any other things I have missed?

2008 R2 accessing Shares on 2003 server

Hello

I have a 2008 r2 server (RDPServer) that cannot access any shares from a 2003 server.

Other servers are able to access the 2003 server shares.

The only error is simply "The server cannot perform the requested operation".

I can ping the 2003 server from the RDPServer.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason
