How to allow users to create, save and rename files/folder but not be able to delete

Hello,

We have shared files and folder available in a network on our Windows Server 2016. Users should be able to create, save and rename files or folder but they shouldn't be able to delete any files or folders from our network.

Any idea on how can we achieved this and what permissions do we need to set?

We really appreciate any suggestions or opinion to accomplish this.

Thanks,

SV

Auditing Share Folders

Hello Every one,

I have a File Server (Windows Server 2012 R2) which has 3 Share Folders and these share folders are accessed over 100 users at a time what I want is to turn on delete and delete sub folders and files, whenever a users deletes a folder, sub folder and file.

I have looked at its group policy there is two options for this one isObject Access Policy and Second one is Audit File Share Policy Now which one should I use ???

As my understanding as I am setting this policy only for shares, So I must go with Audit File Share Policy, but still I need your kind suggestions.

Thanks

Server 2016, Unable to Attach Virtual Disk

After a recent power cycle my system suddenly lost access to my virtual disk. After some digging, it appears the disk is now unattached. I have tried to reconnect via PowerShell (with admin privileges) and the GUI but the command fails, and a subsequent event is logged as "Disk 6 has been surprised removed". The command I'm running and error is as follows:

Connect-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName "Virtual Disk Name"

Connect-VirtualDisk : Failed
Activity ID: {characters}
At line:1 char:1
+ Connect-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName "VaultDisk1"
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified:(StorageWMI:ROOT/Microsoft/...SFT_VirtualDisk) [Connect-VirtualDisk], CimE xception
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : StorageWMI 4,Connect-VirtualDisk1

When trying to attach the disk with the GUI the error reports as "Error attaching or detaching virtual disk: Failed to attach virtual disk to ComputerName. Failed Activity ID: {string of characters}"

Otherwise the HDDs are all in working order and the storage pool reports as healthy. If you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. I've done some googling but it wasn't particularly fruitful. The few potential solutions I did find involved connecting the drives to a separate computer to rebuild the disk, but I'm just a casual home user and this wouldn't really be possible for me.

Shutting off SMB1

Hi,

I'm late to the game on this, but my manager wants it done. I've read some docs on how to remove it, but I still have some lingering questions:

1) My manager is primarily concerned about shutting this protocol down on our servers, but there are plenty of post about shutting it off on clients as well. Is this necessary?

2) We use Net App Filers in conjunction with VSphere 6.0 & 6.5 Hypervisors. I have spotted a few posts that talk about potential dependency problems here with respect to smb1. Can you tell me how to go about verifying that we're okay to shut this down.

3) I don't know why , but 3 of 4 of our domain controllers are also running smb1. Is it okay to shut these off?

Any other pointers appreciated as well.

Bring Disk Online With PowerShell is not persistent

Hello,

I build an Exchange server with 8+ disks used for different Exchange databases & logs but I build almost the entire system using PowerShell commands instead of the UI.

When I online my disks with PowerShell

Get-Disk | Where-Object IsOffline –Eq $True | Set-Disk –IsOffline $False

Then reboot the disks go offline again.

This appears to be because of the SAN Policy possibly?

DISKPART> san

SAN Policy : Offline Shared

However after bringing the disks online via the Disk Management console and the disks now come online automatically after rebooting.

So how could I do the equivalent with PowerShell?  It seems like that should be built-in to the Set-Disk command.

DFS replication. HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)

This is a new DFS installation. There are two members DFS replication group. Both of them are located in same AD domain and in same AD site. Both servers are Win2008r2x64.

When I go to DFS Management console -> Replication -> Replication Group -> Connections Tab. Right click on FIRST SERVER and choose "Replicate Now..." I get en error "The member "SECOND SERVER" could not be contacted to get current schedule status. The error returned was "Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)). Do you still want to attempt to override the schedule For this member?".

The replication is not passing through.

Just file user creator can modify their files [Solved]

Hi all,

Is it possible that in a share just the user creator of a file can modify it?
Other user that can access to the same share can just read this file.

How can I do it?
Do I need to install particular roles on my Windows Server?

Thanks
Federico

Configured "Event Forwarder" of SECURITY events in File Server

I have configured "Event forwarder" for file server and now all Security events are getting stored at separate Audit Server. But I am not sure if "Event forwarders" logs are real-time or there is some delay?

1. Is "Event forwarder" logs are real time?

2. If there is delay then how much time approximately ?

Modify Permission but No Delete

I have been working since a week on a issue, but I couldn't find its solution even I did google and ask friends.

In our company we have 3 share folders which our director told me to allow users to access these shares and has the right of read, write, copy and edit folders and files, but when in NTFS permission I give mentioned rights with no delete its gives error while saving the .DOC and .XLX files.

The reason behind this error was when we are saving a file or renaming so the file was removing and recreating while saving and renaming, So I went to check sever 2016 and 2019 even though in these two latest servers this problem was there.

I come to a result in Microsoft Windows Servers this problem exist and has no solution.

I have asked this question to find a solution that we urgently need that users should modify the file, but they should not be able to delete folders and files.

I asked this question if any body has any solution or not ????

I am attaching my NTFS permission here for you https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/1565589

SMB and Oplock/filelock issues when switching from wireless to cable or vice verse

Hi,

Have some questions regarding oplock / file lock when switching to another IP address with the SMB protocol...

Scenario:

User1 works on an file, file is locked for editing for User2 User 1 has to go to an meeting, and unplugs the computer from the dock and goes to wireless instead, which has another IP then on cable.

User2 clicks on the file again, gets the lock instead due to user1 now has new IP address and SMB can’t communicate with User1.

User2 works on the file, saves and the lock function is now removed, User1 now saves the file, which causes the file to get corrupt...

Question:

Is there an function on the SMB protocol that can see that the user working on the file has switched IP address, and still has the file locked until main person is done with editing the document? or is there any workarounds solving this issue?

Alternative for NTFS Permission

I need to give right of read, copy , write to folder, write to files in short I want users modify the files and folders but NOT Delete the files and folders I have checked windows server 2012, 2016, 2019 which this feature was not available because of temporary files which is generating in .DOC and XLX when you deny delete, So it wont be able to rename and save files too.

I want to use a third party software which should have this feature of modify but no delete.

Encrypting fixed data volumes on Windows 2016 server (FIPS compliant)

Hi, I've been reading a lot of resources on this topic and have put a lot of pieces together but would like confirmation on some fundamental aspects.

A little background...we have a cluster of standalone servers that have sensitive data that needs to follow some government compliance rules (FIPS).

An example of this is we need to encrypt a couple server data volumes that contains this data.  But we need to ensure that the encryption methods are FIPS compliant.  From what I can tell, Bitlocker's crypto algorithms are as long as "FIPS mode" is enabled via GP, recovery passwords aren't used, etc.

Since we have not used server encryption of any kind in our server environment I'm not really sure what to expect, so to start here are a few questions ( I have a test server but have not yet determined the exact test scenario yet):

  1. I see TPM hw chips mentioned a lot in these configs.  The servers in play here do not have them.  But to my knowledge, those chips are only relevant for server boot protection, and not data drive only protection, correct?  Or could they hold the keys if only encrypting data drives?  In our case we don't even need to encrypt the c: drive.
  2. Once the volumes are encrypted, what is the real benefit?  The physical server is secure and the user's have controlled (NTFS) access to the data volumes.  So basically, if we decommissioned the server and scrapped the drives we could ensure no data access is possible?  Or if a drive was removed, its not possible to access the data from any other server?
  3. Assuming answer to question 2 is yes, is this where the USB stick comes in to play (if not TPM)?  To hold the keys and decrypt the volumes when...accessed or?

Thanks in advance.

Search

Hi All,

We have been asked by HR to search our file server for any details relating to a former employee. The server we have is a windows 2008 R2 file server. The search needs to be at the very top level of the disk.

Does anyone know of a tool either native to windows or otherwise that could accomplish a search at the top level which will bring back results for a particular employee.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

The way to identify parity block and data block of RAID5 volume.

Hi,

I am trying to make a program which gets the infomation of RAID5 volume of "Dynamic Disk" on Windows Server 2016.
Now, I'm looking for the way to find out which blocks are parity blocks and which are data blocks by command or API.

For detail, I beleive that a RAID5 volume of Dynamic Disk is composed like following figure.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels#/media/File:RAID_5.svg
I want to identify these blocks(A1..Ap, B1..Bp, C1..Cp,...) of like above figure.
Currently, I got to know that the chunk block size is 64KB.
And next step, I am looking for a way to identify which disk is "Disk 0", which disk is "Disk 1"... of like above figure.
If I get to know about that then I can identify the which blocks is parity or data block by certain calculation.

Is there any way to do that?
Please help me.

Best regards.

Muti-Site Sharing

Hi,

I have an interesting situation, at least in my eyes.

I have 2 sites and a VPN.

Site A can see a file server in Site B.

The VPN when connected to Site A can not locate Site B.

Is there anyway I can use Site A as a bridge so when the VPN clients connect they can access site B using Site A as a go between.

I set up a DFS namespace on one of my servers at Site A going to the designated file location in Site B. It worked fine when physically in the site A building but could not connect when connected to VPN.

It's most likely a routing issue which would take us at least a week to get the networking team to fix so I am hoping there is a System's solution I can put into place so people  working from home can access the Site B resources.

Thanks.
