One Server in a DFS Replication Group Doesn't Allow Certain Users Access

$

We have four servers in a DFS_R cluster, folder permissions are assigned through security groups, three of the servers are working fine but one server denies access to certain users. It's just one folder and it's sub-folders. All users with access are members of the same security groups and most have no issues but there are at least two who are denied access when pointing to this specific server. If I grant access explicitly instead of the through the security group those users have access. If I remove them, they no longer have access.

Any thoughts?

Foldes deletion with too long path

Hi,

We have 500+ users (user1, user2, user3 and so on) home folders to be deleted from file server. I tried deleting one folder using the below command line. However, I faced one issue. There were several subfolders which could not get deleted due to file too long path error. Now, my need is, is there any command line or MS tool that will help deleting all such folders or files? We have 500+ folders to delete and not sure which users home directory gives this problem.

Cmd used:

rd <folder path> /S /Q

Thanks,

Event ID 10000 - Unable to start a DCOM Server.

Installed a fresh 2019 standard server with Microsoft server backup (vm on a 2019 hyper-v server).  Server was clean to boot with the normal warnings...  Installed Active Directory and promoted to be an Active Directory Server.  After the promotion we are getting the following error once during boot and at the start of a windows server backup.  The backup actually completes and has been tested to restore successfully.

Event ID: 10000
Source: DistributedCOM
Event Data: Unable to start a DCOM Server: {9C38ED61-D565-4728-AEEE-C80952F0ECDE}. The error: "0" Happened while starting this command: C:\Windows\System32\vdsldr.exe -Embedding

Any ideas on what is going on?  I have dealt with DCOM 10016 issues before and had to set permissions but this one is a little different.  I was headed down the path that since the local administrator is not there anymore after promotion that it is a permissions/account issue somewhere but haven't found anything there.

Also, what is error: "0"?

iSCSI Targets

Hi All,

I hope everyone is well and safe.

I am going through my MCSA and in chapter 3 there are a few labs that require setting up an iSCSI connection. All is well and I have configured the connections and they all work perfectly fine from Target to Initiator and vice versa etc.

My question is what exactly does an iSCSI connection give you that normal NTFS shares can't? I have a file and print server where I store 250 gb of personal data. Would I be able to use an iSCSI connection directly to the Network share that holds this personal data to access, amend, and delete from a client machine or server.

I am using a File and Print W2016 Server as the Target, and I have a W2016 Management server which I use for the initialising of iSCSI connection.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I can't get my head around the difference between Microsoft bog standard network shares and iSCSI connections?

Regards.

Hyper v Cluster , S2D, HCI

Hi,

1. Does what is the difference between an Hyper-v Replication Cluster and Storage Space Direct?

2. Storage Space Direct (S2D) is synonym to Hyper Converged Infrastructure (please correct me if I am wrong, a well elaborated answer will be appreciated).

3. Non-Converged or legacy approach is something without "high availability" solution?

4. A well structured Step-by-Step guide to design and configure a 2 node HCI infrastructure?

Thanks.

Windows Server 2012 R2-EventID 50 warning events in System log (NTFS)

Hi everyone,

I know that this issue was discussed many times and question was raised many times as well, but I will ask again. :)

On our servers with Windows Server 2012 R2 (only Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual machines are affected), which are hosted on VMware, we have a lot of warning events in System log (source NTFS), when a quiesced snapshot is taken. Errors like the following:

{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Extend\$UsnJrnl:$J:$DATA. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog:$I30:$INDEX_ALLOCATION. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \$Mft::$BITMAP. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

Yes, there is a VMware KB https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2006849, which actually offers to check some Microsoft KBs, that are practically not really useful for 2012 R2.

Also there is a Microsoft KB https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/file-server/troubleshoot/troubleshoot-event-id-50-error, which explains how to decode the error, but also not useful that much.

Only 2012 R2 are affected, nearly all of them; are these events really critical from the prespective of backup? I mean we take quiesced snapshots, does it mean that quiescing fails or no? Or these warning messages can be skipped?

We tried to restore some servers from backup and it seems that all of them are fine. Should we be worried about these warnings?

Appreciate any help. Thanks!

PC's not able to access file share

Hello

i have a few computers that can not access Shared folders on a windows server 2012R2 box. this seemed to happen suddenly. I have found that somehow the HOST name of the affect clients are the issue but not sure how to fix.  Ex: domainPC1 with user X logged in can not access the file share. but if user x logs in on any other PC or if i rename their current PC to domainPC2 then the user has no issues connecting to the share.  this is happening to several of my systems here. I have rebooted the file share systems. i have tried removing the AV software from the clients and the server to see if that was the issue. I have gone over all folder permissions. its just the host name that is having issues.  and before it is offered we would like to keep the PC host name as we have many GP's and our EMR system requires this name for mappings .

Thank you

Path too long to restore files

Hi, I am having a problem with shadow copy on Server 2008 R2, when restoring files, on some files I get the path too long, destination does not support this etc etc message. The thing that is confusing me is......the files were there originally and worked perfectly fine, yet if I try and copy them back into the folder from shadow copy I get this error message, I am literally just trying to restore some files and folders that where there the day before.

DFS namespace target folders inaccessible intermittently

Hello,

DFS running on Windows 2016 servers.  My users are experiencing intermittently issue accessing target folders in the namespace.  One minute the target folders are visible in file explorer and then the target folders disappears.  The issue last for a few minutes and then accessibility is restored by itself.  I have not been unable to reproduce the issue on my end.  Have looked at logs from event viewer and permissions in DFS management looks correct.  This is not a new setup.  Any advise on any troubleshooting steps?  Thank you.

S2D Volume Unhealthy, but Virtual Disk Healthy

$

Hello Technet,

I have a 2016 Hyper-V Cluster using S2D disks.  When reviewing the get-volume command against the cluster, one of my volumes is 'unhealthy'.  Other cluster/s2d health commands show no problems.  Get-VirtualDisk shows healthstatus as healthy, and get-physicaldisk shows all disks as healthy.

The only other command that returns odd behavior is get-storagehealthaction.  I get a number of un-retiring the physical disk jobs that are scheduled with 0 percent completion.  It's unclear if these are derelict jobs as I don't see any retired disks under other commands.

Does anyone know where I should look next, or perhaps should I start a MS ticket?

Can deduplicated volume be safely operated on Windows Client?

$

Data deduplication is not support by client OS. How about already deduplicated volumes?

If I run data deduplication on removable storage or a vhd, then attach it to Windows 10 later, can I operate it safely, if not using known incompatible technologies like robocopy?

I guess that reading or creating new files should be safe, but not sure about modifying files that shares some deduplicated blocks.

Mapped network drives disconnect after some time

$

Hello everybody,

A customer is running Windows Server 2019 Terminal and File servers. The terminal servers map network drives to a file share on the file server. We have problems with two applications, because the network drives are in a disconnected state after some time:

- One has an Access database residing on the file server, accessed from several users. Access crashes on disconnect because its file handles to the database file do not work any longer.

- A .net desktop application is used and its .exe and .dll reside on the file server. The users start the .exe from the mapped drive. When the mapped drives goes into the disconnected state, and the application needs to load something from one of its DLLs, the application crashes with an unhandled exception. The event log says that the .net runtime could not continue because the network connection was disconnected.

We have followed https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/297684/mapped-drive-connection-to-network-share-may-be-lost and set the LanManServer parameters to disconnect after 5000 instead of 15 minutes (on the file server), and set the LanManWorkstaition parameters to disconnect after 65535 instead of 600 seconds (on the terminal servers). But this did _not_ help.

I guess we do not need to discuss whether Access databases are fantastic or file servers are fantastic or running .exes from file shares is fantastic ;-) The question is simple:What can we do to keep the network drives connected, please?

Inherited permissions from "Parent Object" ?

$

I've been looking through some of the older posts regarding this issue and no one seems to have a answer as to why it's happing.  It's easy to fix but only if you catch it.

Issue:  Wheather on server 2008 or 2003 we have found that the permissions on a file and folder were wrong based on the security inheritance rules.  The problem perrmission is a inherited permission with the "Intherited From" (advance security permissions tab on said file or folder) stating  "Parent Object" and nothing more.   The catch is we have no idea were this came from.

1 occurrence)  a users was moving a folder then had no access to it.  We found the folder and the permissions were for the most part correct except one entry (group A) was listed and (group b) wasn't.  (Group B) was suppose to be there because the folder was set to inherit, but it didn't.  (Group A) stated that it was inherited but it was not present on the parent folder.   Funny thing was the permissions works as stated, even though we have no idea how they got there.  Group A also stated that it was inherited from "Parent Object".

2 occurrence) a user created a new folder.  This time the folder inherited all the correct groups, but 1 of them had the wrong permissions.  The parent had the group with Read Only.  The folder created had it as Read/Write and again it stated it was inherited, and inherited from "Parent Object".

Now other inherited permisions state which folder it came from if it is applied correctly.  So this is where the "parent object" part is troubling.

Both of these incidents are very troubling to us becasue it gives the wrong or more permissions then what was intended or desired.  And it was only after a user ran into a problem that we discovered it.  I'm now writing a script to see if I can find more of these occurances.  In any case this, in my opinion, is a major problem and a bug that needs to be addressed by Microsoft.   If system admins can't rely on the permissons to be applied correctly then we have to seriously reconsider Microsoft as a secure file system solution.

We believe we have narrowed down the problem to Windows Explorer, but we are still trying to recreate the problem.

If anyone have additional information on this issue please let us know.

Thank you

Storage Server 2016 - Physical disk went "Retired"

Hi there,

I have use Windows storage server 2016 for company needs.

In server manager I have created storage pool and three virtual disks which include 20 Physical hard disks.

All works good around 12 months and before two days one of Physical disks went into "Retired" Usage state with health status "Warning - Lost Communication"  and second Physical disk is still with "Autmatic" Usage state with health status "Warning - Lost Communication". Both disks have exclamation yellow mark with "Warning:Lost Communication" message.

I assume that disk with "Retired" Usage state is reason why I can’t Attach virtual disk again.

Meanwhile I have added two new hard disks to the pool and wonder what is next step to solve the "Retired" disk problem and get my virtual disk online.

Many thanks,

Licensing Requirement for Windows Server 2016 Data Centre

Dear Community,

I am planning to rebuild my Infrastucture.
Here is the plan:
Three nodes (storage spaces direct configured on the nodes).
Two switches (For fault tolerance)
I want to know that how many Windows server 2016 Data Centre licenses do I need?
There will be total 15 vms running in my environment.
Do I need it for only one node?or all three nodes?

Microsoft licensing is really confusing. CALs? Core based? What factors should I consider?

Please help me out?

Server 2008r2 [RDC] can't communicate with Server 2012r2 DC

$

We have 2 DC's both Server 2012r2 and a server for RDC 2008r2

They have lived happily on a domain with DFS running etc over their data drives which were variously mapped in parts to clients. Nothing unusual for a small business setup.

DC1 now sees the RDC server but can't access its data files. It does see and communcate with DC2 fully. DC2 communicates with bot DC1 and RDC fully. RDC sees DC1 but can't communicate with it however can communicate with DC2.

RDC can't download the GP from DC1 because it doesn't communicate with it.

All the servers can ping each other and clients communicate with DC1, RDC and DC2 individually. However the DFS replication and mapping has failed.

The issue does not appear to be a firewall problem.

Are there any suggestions as to what might be the cause of this communcation failure.

DFS namespace and replication

kindly  help me understand advantages of DFS and it is mandatory to use namespace and it is possible to use short or alias namespace instead of using \\domain name\sharename. just looking how to access folders using short namespace

how to recover if namespace is having issues un accessible due to some reason or server down etc?

DFS replication means replicating the folders into servers? if yes how to recovery if any issues happens or server down
