Hi Guys

I am moving data from a mac server to Windows 2016 Standard.

I have mapped the network share from the mac to the WS.

The problem I have is with illegal and forbidden characters in file and folder names.

Is there a tool that I can run to find forbidden characters and replace them? Or is there a method or way to overcome this problem.

Thanks, Abdul

How authentication and authorization process works while accessing shared folder on File Server

Hello,

Can someone explain detailed authentication and authorization process and steps involved in accessing shared folder on File Server by user in Windows Domain environment? I understand that Authentication process is performed by Domain Controller while login to Windows Domain. Does user re authenticated by Domain Controller when shared folder access request is sent to File Server and forwarded to Domain Controller by File Server?

Event ID 10000 - Unable to start a DCOM Server.

Installed a fresh 2019 standard server with Microsoft server backup (vm on a 2019 hyper-v server).  Server was clean to boot with the normal warnings...  Installed Active Directory and promoted to be an Active Directory Server.  After the promotion we are getting the following error once during boot and at the start of a windows server backup.  The backup actually completes and has been tested to restore successfully.

Event ID: 10000
Source: DistributedCOM
Event Data: Unable to start a DCOM Server: {9C38ED61-D565-4728-AEEE-C80952F0ECDE}. The error: "0" Happened while starting this command: C:\Windows\System32\vdsldr.exe -Embedding

Any ideas on what is going on?  I have dealt with DCOM 10016 issues before and had to set permissions but this one is a little different.  I was headed down the path that since the local administrator is not there anymore after promotion that it is a permissions/account issue somewhere but haven't found anything there.

Also, what is error: "0"?

Dfs namespace rights

When installing dfs, when creating the namespace i am asked to chose rights for users/admins at namespace level. But why is that? What is the purpose of setting userrights at the namespace level and what would be a best practice?

Also, i notoced i can create more thn one namespace. Why is that? When/why should i create more than one?

I was thinking about creating one data namespace and adding my fileservers folders inthere.

Many thanks for the help.

Foldes deletion with too long path

Hi,

We have 500+ users (user1, user2, user3 and so on) home folders to be deleted from file server. I tried deleting one folder using the below command line. However, I faced one issue. There were several subfolders which could not get deleted due to file too long path error. Now, my need is, is there any command line or MS tool that will help deleting all such folders or files? We have 500+ folders to delete and not sure which users home directory gives this problem.

Cmd used:

rd <folder path> /S /Q

Robocopy LOG Missing

Hello everybody,
i have a rather unusual problem with robocopy.
I am migrating a file server from QNAP (linux FS) to a new server 2019 and I am using robobocopy with the following parameters.
"/ e / copy: DAT / r: 1 / w: 0 / mir / MT: 64 / FFT /log:c:\log.txt / v / np / tee"

on almost all the shares that I copied it works regularly and if there are files with access denied they are regularly logged.

in a situation, however, in the final report I get a message of 2 "FAILED" without anything being written in the log.

by analyzing the source FS by hand I discovered that there is a "lost + found" folder (probably written by "MAC" clients) that I don't have access to.

the question is: how come i don't receive a LOG line with "access denied" as it happens in other situations ??

I searched a lot on google before writing here but I didn't find any info about it.

my problem is that that 2 "failed" could be something else and without a log i don't know where to look!

Windows 2016 Server - Working with the Registry Editor

$

Good morning:

I'm currently working with the Registry Editor of a certain user embedded within Windows 2016 Server. Today I'm analyzing the behavior of the registry keys "HKCU" and "HKU" with respect to the association of file extensions.

More specifically, I'm attempting to check if in the registry keys "HKCU" and "HKU" there is any reference to the ".aaa"  file extensions. However, I don't seem to understand how to do so and where to check for those. Which part of the database contains those references?

Thank you beforehand.

Greetings.

Multiple Virtual Machines and Shared File Access

Hi,

I have few VMs (VM1,VM2...VMn). What will be best practice for file /data storage so all all VMs can access data /files simultaneously without impacting the performance? A network share ? Storage Space Direct or to ensure quality without any performance issues shall make available data across all VMs (same data but copied to each VM).

Having files /data available across all VMs because in this case it will be required to copy new files on several locations?

RAID vs Storage Space Direct

Hi,

Does SSD provides advantages over RAID 5?

A while ago was collecting information regarding RAID 5 as below can achieve with S2D?

Help please with Win10 Storage Space Error / Read-Only status

$

I set-up a storage space with 4 USB drives, sorry can't remember exactly what kind of RAID array (redundancy level) I chose. Today it disappeared from File Explorer and when I went into 'Storage Spaces' two of the drives showed a yellow Warning sign, one of which additionally said Error and something like "you should considered swapping this disk".

I have a spare USB drive so I tried to add it to the pool but it kept saying "Can't add this drive". (the drive is the same as one of the ones currently used, and brand new so I pretty sure it isn't faulty). I'm short on USB ports and it seems that only the main four (used) motherboard ports are acceptable - I've previously had that error whenever I try to connect a drive to either my additional PCI usb card or any USB hubs.

So after trying a few times, and failing to extend the pool in order to remove the problematic drives, the storage space now appears to have gone into a read-only mode - I can no longer click 'Change Settings'/ 'Manage' and I don't know what I should do.

I've seen posts about on how to set a storage pool to read-write access by using Windows PowerShell:

Get-StoragePool <PoolName> | Set-StoragePool -IsReadOnly $false'

but I don't know what my pool's name is. How/where do I find it? And what should I do after that?

I really need help on what procedure I should follow for recovery. Given that I only have four working USB ports, should I disconnect the failing drive and add the spare one into that port (without first running through the storage pool 'remove drive' option... if I manage to set it to no longer be read only.) Or is it mandatory for me to first 'Remove' the failed drive?

Any noob-friendly step-by-step guidance would be very much appreciated.

Networking for the Storage Space Direct

Hi,

I am learning how to setup and configure the Networking for the Storage Space Direct.

Using the following link, I can see the recommended configuration:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-spaces/storage-spaces-direct-hardware-requirements#networking

Minimum interconnect for small scale 2-3 node

  • 10 Gbps network interface card (NIC), or faster

Recommended interconnect for high performance, at scale, or deployments of 4+

  • NICs that are remote-direct memory access (RDMA) capable, iWARP (recommended) or RoCE

Is there any documentation how to configure Networking /step-by-step guides etc. to understand (Lab work) to build concepts?

PC's not able to access file share

Hello

i have a few computers that can not access Shared folders on a windows server 2012R2 box. this seemed to happen suddenly. I have found that somehow the HOST name of the affect clients are the issue but not sure how to fix.  Ex: domainPC1 with user X logged in can not access the file share. but if user x logs in on any other PC or if i rename their current PC to domainPC2 then the user has no issues connecting to the share.  this is happening to several of my systems here. I have rebooted the file share systems. i have tried removing the AV software from the clients and the server to see if that was the issue. I have gone over all folder permissions. its just the host name that is having issues.  and before it is offered we would like to keep the PC host name as we have many GP's and our EMR system requires this name for mappings .

Thank you

DFS doesnt replicate

Guys,

I got 2 sites, seperated with a pfsense server. The sites can communicate, but dfs isnt replicating from site A to site B.

I tried troubeslooting like this:

i created the replication group as stated in several tutorials i watched/read

about the log, it states the following:

Cannot access the local WMI repository.

servers unavialable for reporting

Tried this, but that didnt help:

https://www.hostfav.com/blog/index.php/2017/01/27/dfs-error-cannot-access-the-local-wmi-repository/

Think server B is causing the Problems. I removed DFS, reboted, reinstalled, but the problems still occur.

So i created a new server in a third site and that give me also the following error:

Cannot access the local WMI repository.
Registration failed for the DFS Replication service providers.

But i dont get it working. Anyone who can help me with this? What am i missing/doing wrong?

Network setup for 2019 S2D hyper-converged - how to connect to corp lan

$

We are in the process of setting up a 3 node 2019 hyperconverged infrastructure. Right now I plan on having two networks on the infrastructure, 1 vlan for management and another for everything else (SMB, VMs, etc).

My question is how best to handle client access from the corp network. Should I place the 2nd Vlan for SMBs and VMs on the same vlan as our corp network? Or a separate network and then setup the switches to route between the two? Or something else?

Encrypting fixed data volumes on Windows 2016 server (FIPS compliant)

$

Hi, I've been reading a lot of resources on this topic and have put a lot of pieces together but would like confirmation on some fundamental aspects.

A little background...we have a cluster of standalone servers that have sensitive data that needs to follow some government compliance rules (FIPS).

An example of this is we need to encrypt a couple server data volumes that contains this data.  But we need to ensure that the encryption methods are FIPS compliant.  From what I can tell, Bitlocker's crypto algorithms are as long as "FIPS mode" is enabled via GP, recovery passwords aren't used, etc.

Since we have not used server encryption of any kind in our server environment I'm not really sure what to expect, so to start here are a few questions ( I have a test server but have not yet determined the exact test scenario yet):

  1. I see TPM hw chips mentioned a lot in these configs.  The servers in play here do not have them.  But to my knowledge, those chips are only relevant for server boot protection, and not data drive only protection, correct?  Or could they hold the keys if only encrypting data drives?  In our case we don't even need to encrypt the c: drive.
  2. Once the volumes are encrypted, what is the real benefit?  The physical server is secure and the user's have controlled (NTFS) access to the data volumes.  So basically, if we decommissioned the server and scrapped the drives we could ensure no data access is possible?  Or if a drive was removed, its not possible to access the data from any other server?
  3. Assuming answer to question 2 is yes, is this where the USB stick comes in to play (if not TPM)?  To hold the keys and decrypt the volumes when...accessed or?

Thanks in advance.

DFS Config

Hi,

We have two DFS File Server(SRVF1&SRVF2) , one is running Windows 2012 R2 and another is windows 2008 R2.
DFS Management( DFS Namespaces) is Install in our Domain Controller WS2012R2.
We want to create new DFS File Server(SRVF3) , what is the good practice to implement this and to have everything on the new DFS File server.

Thanks.

Adobe Acrobat + DFS + Clustered File Server

$

Hello,

Our current setup is Acrobat is the default PDF viewer and Protected Mode is turned on.  We currently have a single Windows 2012R2 File Server and a single DFS server.

SRV-DEPT-SHARES is the physical server name

DFS has a namespace for Depts and a target for each department

\\domain.fqdn\depts\IT and that target points to \\SVR-DEPT-SHARES\IT and \\domain.fqdn\depts\IT gets mapped as V by GPP

Users are able to open multiple PDF files in the same launching of Acrobat by double clicking the PDFs in the V drive.  In other words, everything works as expected.

So I am migrating department shares to a new clustered file server setup (2019).

SRV-DEPT-SHARE1 and SRV-DEPT-SHARE2 are the physical server names and the "virtual" name is SRV-DEPT-SHARE

I have migrated all the IT department data to the new clustered setup and changed the DFS Folder Target to point to \\SRV-DEPT-SHARE\IT and everything is fine as V is mapped to the new cluster.  Nothing about DFS changed other than the target for this share.

Users can open multiple word, excel etc files at the same time by clicking on each in their V drive.  BUT, PDFs only open the first one that they click on.  Subsequent PDFs cannot be opened by clicking as long as that first one is open.

They can open multiple PDFs on V by File > Open and navigating to another PDF on the V drive.

They can open multiple PDFs on V IF they turn off Protected Mode in Acrobat.

They can open multiple PDFs on V if they change the association to Chrome or Edge etc but not via Arcobat

They can open multiple PDFs on other drives mapped to DFS targets

They can open multiple PDFs on the clustered server if they map a drive to \\SRV-DEPT-SHARE\IT, bypassing DFS

They can open multiple PDFs on other DFS targeted drives on the old file server

So there has to be something wrong with my Cluster Setup or some step I missed, or does Acrobat just not play nice with both when DFS & Windows File Server Clusters are involved?

Avoid Offline Chkdsk?

$
0
0

We had a power outage some time ago that caused some file corruption on our primary file server. In researching the best way to fix the corruption with the least amount of impact to the users, I noticed that the combination of the chkdsk /scan and /spotfix will allow me to scan my file shares online, and only take it offline for a very short time while the spotfix command is run. This online scanning is a godsend for us, since our primary file share is a healthy 15TB and taking that file share offline would provide a significant problem for us.

Problem being... when I try to run the online /scan command, it tells me that the volume is in the "Full Chkdsk Needed" state and that I need to run the offline "chkdsk /f" command. Is there any way to get around this? Taking that volume offline at all is a major problem for us, let alone taking it offline for as long as it's gonna take to scan 15TB worth of small files.

Hyper v Cluster , S2D, HCI

Hi,

1. Does what is the difference between an Hyper-v Replication Cluster and Storage Space Direct?

2. Storage Space Direct (S2D) is synonym to Hyper Converged Infrastructure (please correct me if I am wrong, a well elaborated answer will be appreciated).

3. Non-Converged or legacy approach is something without "high availability" solution?

4. A well structured Step-by-Step guide to design and configure a 2 node HCI infrastructure?

Thanks.
