Recovering deleted partitions in Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core
Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) and Quorum
Hi,
Learning the Hyper V clustering, CSV are shared storage locations to store VM workloads ...correct?
If that correct, what is Quorum exactly and why we need it?
Similarly, how we can differentiate disk witness with quorum or csv?
Currently, using the following sources as reference: anything else is suggested?

Foldes deletion with too long path
Hi,
We have 500+ users (user1, user2, user3 and so on) home folders to be deleted from file server. I tried deleting one folder using the below command line. However, I faced one issue. There were several subfolders which could not get deleted due to file too long path error. Now, my need is, is there any command line or MS tool that will help deleting all such folders or files? We have 500+ folders to delete and not sure which users home directory gives this problem.
Cmd used:
rd <folder path> /S /Q
Thanks,

DFS namespace element not found server 2019
Hi,
I have 2 Domain controllers with server 2019 in my homelab.
Installed DFS without replication on DC1. My namespace pointed to <contoso.com\data$>
DC1 had a problem so i demoted DC1 and did a reinstall of the server, dc promo, install DFS.
When i open DFS admin i can do show the namespace but when opening i get an error
The namespace cannot be queried. Element not found.
When i do a delete i get the same error.
I tried adsiedit.msc and deleted the keys in CN=Dfs-Configuration,CN=System,DC=contoso,DC=com
still no luck in removing or getting them back
What can i do?
Storage Replica back end, occasional File Server slowdowns for users
We have 2 identical HPE nodes running Server 2019 DC with a 10TB main data share. Every so often we get users complaining about slow downs. Logs are on Samsung SSD's, Data is a Raid5 array of HPE mechanical drives.
Looking at the performance through Admin Centre I can't see any big numbers of data moving around, however I do see the Average Log Latency give strange readings and Average IO go above 5ms. Currently the servers are connected by 2x1Gbit NICs, bonded for replication and access traffic. The servers also have a 10Gbit sfp+ card installed so I was planning to try a short DAC cable and setup a network constraint to move the replication traffic over to that discreet link leaving the access traffic on the bonded NICs. Does that sound like it could work? Or is there a more scientific way to monitor Storage Replica performance?
Sorry couldn't attach pic.
DFSR Issues
Hi
I have 2019 Server and I have different folders set to DFSR .
one of the folders is not replicating and on event viewer iam seeing event ID 4004 , Atombstoned content set deletion has been scheduled .
How can i fix this issue .
New files and folders on a Linux client mounting a Windows 2012 Server for NFS share do not inherit Owner and Group when SetGID bit set
Problem statement
When I mount a Windows NFS service file share using UUUA and set the Owner and Group, and set the SetGID bit on the parent folder in a hierarchy. New Files and folders inside and underneath the parent folder do not inherit the Owner and Group permissions of the parent.
I am given to understand from this Microsoft KnowledgeBase article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951716/en-gb) the problem is due to the Windows implmentation of NFS Services not supporting the Solaris SystemV or BSD grpid "Semantics"
However the article says the same functionality can acheived by using ACE Inheritance in conjunction with changing the Registry setting for "KeepInheritance" to enable Inheritance propagation of the Permissions by the Windows NFS Services.
1. The Precise location of the "KeepInheritance" DWORD key appears to have "moved" in Windows Server 2012 from a Services path to a Software path, is this documented somewhere? And after enabling it, (or creating it in the previous location) the feature seems non-functional. Is there a method to file a Bug with Microsoft for this Feature?
2. All of the references on demonstrating how to set an ACE to achieve the same result "currently" either lead to broken links on Microsoft technical websites, or are not explicit they are vague or circumreferential. There are no plain Examples. Can an Example be provided?
3. Is UUUA compatible with the method of setting ACE to acheive this result, or must the Linux client mount be "Mapped" using an Authentication source. And could that be with the new Flat File passwd and group files in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and is there an Example available.
Scenario:
Windows Server 2012 Standard

Remote path: fs4:/raid-6-array

Windows Server 2016 - SMB Connections stop responding on server at 12.5k cumulative "TCPv4 Active Connections"
Hi all.
We've come across an issue which is now a persistent expected failure.
We have a File Server cluster (single node at present) which is every 2 or so days stopping inbound SMB connections.
The SMB connections fail from;
client > clustershare$ (cluster)
client > server\c$ (localhost)
Our setup is:
Single node failover cluster with an SMB share
NIC teaming.
Backend storage (over iscsi, seperate nics)
SMBv1 Disabled
SMB Config has not been changed.
---------------------------------------------------
This also fails on the local node. Connections don't fail, rather just hang.
There are also no event logs to tell us there is an issue prior to this happening....
A restart always fixes this. We have monitored "TCPv4: Connections Active" which cumulatively says at 12.5k sessions, the SMB shares all start to fail.

Server 2012 R2 File Server Stops Responding to SMB Connections
Hi There,
Massive shot in the dark here but I am struggling with a pretty major issue atm. We have a production file server that is hosted on the following:
Dell MD 3220i -> iSCSI -> Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster -> Passthrough Disk -> Server 2012 R2 File Server VM
Essentially 3 times now, roughly a month or so apart. The file server stops accepting connections. During this time, the server is perfectly accessible through rdp or with a simple ping. I can browse the files on the server directly but no-one appears to be able to access the shares over SMB. A reboot of the server fixes the issue.
As per a KB article I removed nod antivirus from the server to rule out a conflicting filter mode driver after the second fault. Sadly yesterday it happened again.
The only relevant errors in the servers log files are:
SMB Server Event ID 551
SMB Session Authentication Failure Client Name: \\192.168.105.79 Client Address: 192.168.105.79:50774 User Name: HHS\H6-08$ Session ID: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Status: Insufficient server resources exist to complete the request. (0xC0000205) Guidance: You should expect this error when attempting to connect to shares using incorrect credentials. This error does not always indicate a problem with authorization, but mainly authentication. It is more common with non-Windows clients. This error can occur when using incorrect usernames and passwords with NTLM, mismatched LmCompatibility settings between client and server, duplicate Kerberos service principal names, incorrect Kerberos ticket-granting service tickets, or Guest accounts without Guest access enabled
and
SMB Server event ID 1020 File system operation has taken longer than expected. Client Name: \\192.168.105.97 Client Address: 192.168.105.97:49571 User Name: HHS\12J.Champion Session ID: 0x2C07B40004A5 Share Name: \\*\Subjects File Name: Command: 5 Duration (in milliseconds): 176784 Warning Threshold (in milliseconds): 120000 Guidance: The underlying file system has taken too long to respond to an operation. This typically indicates a problem with the storage and not SMB.
I have checked the underlying disk/iscsi/network hyper-v cluster for any other errors or issues, but as far as I can tell everything is fine.
Is it possible that something else is left over from the NOD antivirus installation?
Looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further.
Thanks
extract objects attributes from ou within a server
Hi,
I have a task where we need to gather all the attributes of the objects within an OU in our AD domain server. Do we have powershell script to perform this action. Like some script which extract all the attributes of objects in excel file.

Remove-Physical Disk don't progress on my Windows 2016 cluster
Hi Everybody
I have 2 Windows2016 servers in a cluster shared volume
One of my 18 (2*9) hard disk report some failure so I want to remove from my S2D pool
This disk is marked as "retired"
$disk=Get-PhysicalDisk -SerialNumber 8HG42ZHH
PS C:\Windows\system32> $disk FriendlyName SerialNumber CanPool OperationalStatus HealthStatus Usage Size ------------ ------------ ------- ----------------- ------------ ----- ---- HGST HUH721212AL5200 8HG42ZHH False {Removing From Pool, Lost Communication} Warning Retired 10.69 TB
so I must remove this disk from the pool with
Get-StoragePool *S2D* | Remove-PhysicalDisk –PhysicalDisk $disk
But this job hangs and never progress even after 12 hours of hard work as shown here
Get-StorageJob Name IsBackgroundTask ElapsedTime JobState PercentComplete BytesProcessed BytesTotal ---- ---------------- ----------- -------- --------------- -------------- ---------- RemovePhysicalDisk False 00:00:00 Running 0 Repair False 00:00:00 Starting 0 Repair True 00:30:48 Suspended 0 0 805306368
The job stay in Running mode and don't progress
I try with mutliple reboots,
Can you explain why I cannot remove this disk
Please I need your help for this sad problem, if you have any question , please don't hesitate to ask me.
Thanks for your time and your help
File server VM providing shared storage via VHDX stored on tiered storage in Storage Spaces
I have a single Hyper-V host with Windows Server 2019 Datacenter as a host OS.
I have local storage (Hyper-V host) only, consisting of the following:
- 4 NVMe drives (Intel DC P4510 2.5″ 1TB) connected to an HBA (Supermicro AOC-SLG3-4E4T)
- 6 SAS HDD (4x 6TB, 2x 8TB) connected to an HBA (Broadcom SAS 9305-16i)
With those 10 drives, I would like to create a 2-way mirrored tiered storage (NVMe + HDD) and a 3-way mirrored storage (HDD), using Storage Spaces.
I'm not sure whether to (1) virtualize the file server role or (2) just install it as a role on the Hyper-V host:
- A file server VM would manage shared storage via a large VHDX (e.g. stored on the 2-way mirrored tiered storage) attached to the VM.
- if the file server role is installed on the Hyper-V host, it can manage shared storage directly on the Storage Spaces.
This large VHDX file cannot be at the same time in the NVMe tier and the HDD tier, right? So, if I were to virtualize the file server role, I would lose the advantage of the tiered storage for my shared storage?
Work Folders can't encrypt files on Windows 10 1903
Hi,
problems with WF encryption was discussed here many times before, but I think that now it's related to Windows 10 1903, because Windows 10 1809 is working fine.
Error message is still the same:
Sync failed. Work Folders path: C:\Users\MYUSER\Work Folders; Error: (0x80c80314) The Work Folders path has to be encrypted. You might have an application holding the Work Folders folder open or the folder might be compressed. Close File Explorer and any open files or apps, and check the folder's Advanced properties to ensure that the folder is not compressed. EventID 2100
I had tried Windows 10 1903 domain joined / not domain joined, followed tips on https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Storage-at-Microsoft/Troubleshooting-Work-Folders-on-Windows-client/ba-p/425627 but WF encryption is still failing.
Has anyone working WF on Windows 10 1903 with encryption enabled?
Best regards,
Jiri
Slow file sharing access to directory with many files
We're having a new issue with file sharing on a Windows 2008 R2 server. On the server, we have a directory that has a large number of files (>130,000) that are mostly .rtf and .pdf and <1 MB in size. If those files are opened on the server itself from the directory, they open very quickly. Our client computers (all Windows 10) are wired on a gigabit LAN via a single network switch. Prior to the April 2018 Windows Update, those clients would rapidly open and close the files in that shared directory. Since the update, there is a 10-15 second (or more) delay in opening each file in that directory.
If the file is moved to another directory on the same server, without many other files in the same directory, then the file will open quickly as it did previously. Emphasizing this point, when a LAN speed test is done, the ability to read/write to the server is just as fast as it was prior to the update. When the speed test is attempted at the directory containing the large number of files, it also returns the same (fast) read/write speed. However, it seems to take a long time to actually connect/authenticate to that directory.
Clearly, something changed with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. The users who migrated first to this update initially reported the problem which wasn't evident universally until the update was installed on all clients. Has anyone else experienced this issue? We are planning on migrating or upgrading the server to Windows 2012 or 2016, but I'm not sure this would solve the problem.
Storage Server 2016 - Physical disk went "Retired"
Hi there,
I have use Windows storage server 2016 for company needs.
In server manager I have created storage pool and three virtual disks which include 20 Physical hard disks.
All works good around 12 months and before two days one of Physical disks went into "Retired" Usage state with health status "Warning - Lost Communication" and second Physical disk is still with "Autmatic" Usage state with health status "Warning - Lost Communication". Both disks have exclamation yellow mark with "Warning:Lost Communication" message.
I assume that disk with "Retired" Usage state is reason why I can’t Attach virtual disk again.
Meanwhile I have added two new hard disks to the pool and wonder what is next step to solve the "Retired" disk problem and get my virtual disk online.
Many thanks,
Repairing a Storage Space Virtual Drive fails after replacing a failed drive with SMR drive (unknowingly)
I have a 2012 R2 server with an 8 drive Storage Space pool
I replaced a failed drive with a Western Digital Red NAS drive that turns out to be a SMR drive.
All physical disks report healthy
My Virtual Disk reports degraded
Repair of the Virtual Disk always fails to complete.
What are my options? Can I use this drive? Do I need to get a NON SMR drive? Can I just remove and replace the SMR drive?

FRS to DFRS Migration Stuck in 'Eliminating' State
Hello,
I followed this guide to migrate from FRS to DFSR. Everything was going fine until the last step and now one of the DCs is stuck in an eliminating state.
It looks like DFSR is working fine, like maybe it just can't complete the final cleanup of FRS for some reason.
PS C:\Windows\system32> dfsrmig /getmigrationstate
The following Domain Controllers are not in sync with Global state ('Eliminated'):
Domain Controller (Local Migration State) - DC Type
===================================================
PDC ('Eliminating') - Primary DC
Migration has not yet reached a consistent state on all Domain Controllers.
State information might be stale due to AD latency.
I'm not sure how to proceed from here. Any ideas?
Storage Pool not listed all physical disks stuck in "Starting"
I swapped motherboards and my storage space was listed there (Some disks offline) didn't try and use it.
Did a reset of windows (That didn't reset anything).
Rebooted into windows no storage space listed in the ui or Get-VirtualDisk.
All drives listed in device manager but not disk manager. Get-PhysicalDisk yields:

Is there anything I can do to recover the space without building a new array and copying over the data with ReclaiMe?
