Hi All,

I have two DFS servers and set both servers drives to VSS.

HQ  DFS server got 10 Target folders except one target all are set to first among all the target . So Project folder is in DR DFS and set as Primary.

My Question if HQ DFS goes down can users access the shadow copies?

If HQ user want to restore project file , what will happen?

Can VSS set to replicate ?

or what is the best way to set this up?

Assigning Permissions of a folder/sub-folders and files and inherit recursively

$

I'm trying to assign permissions to a folder that contains multiple sub-folders and files using icacls.

My syntax for assigning a group to a folder:
icacls Z:\TestFolder /grant:r Management_SG:(OI)(CI)F /C

This seems to work. But, when I dig in to a 3rd or 4th sub-directories, I noticed that "Management_SG" does not have permissions to a folder(s) and/or to a file(s)

When I use:
icacls Z:\TestFolder\TestSubFolder /q /c /t /reset

Again, it seems to inherit the permissions from "Z:\TestFolder". But, when I dig in to multiple sub-directories, some of the folders or files does not inherit the permissions. Is there a way to assign permissions and force it to inherit recursively?

I do notice that when I try to assign folder permissions, from Windows Explorer, in the advance properties tab, I would get an error "Error Applying Security. An error occurred while applying security information to: "folder path" Access is denied". Why would i get that when I have local administrative rights. I've even tried running the Windows Explorer in Admin mode.

Can you please assist.

DFSR Members not replicating, DFSRs.exe using 99% CPU

I have 3 DFSR members (1 primary, 1 backup and 1 remote site). The backup and remote site members have apparently stopped replicating. On the backup member, the DFSRs.exe process is constantly running at >99%, and its generating about 80MB of log files a minute. Scrolling through some of them, seems the majority of the log entries are of this type:

20160608 10:12:40.400 4172 JRWP   763 JournalWrapTask::MarkTopDown LDB Updating ID Record

Also noticed when I run a DFSR Health Report, on the backup member it doesn't list the disk volume where the replicated data resides:

I'm able to browse through the contents of the replicated data on the D: volume, so I know it's there.

In the logs for the remote site member, I see the same "JournalWrapTask::MarkTopDown LDB Updating ID Record" entries, and I also see a lot of:

Meet::CheckInSync -> WAIT Related record is under journal wrap recovery.

Do these log entries mean anything to anyone? Any ideas how I can troubleshoot further?

Thanks,

Shaun

Enable (Read Only) Replication Group Access Denied

I have some Server 2012 R2 servers running DFS-R.  Some of the members are are marked as Read Only.  I have noticed that if I Disable a member and then later try to Enable it, I get an Access Denied error during the "Set permissions on replicated folder" stage.  It appears as if the file system filter driver is still enforcing the read only status even though the member has been disabled.  I have to reboot the server in order to clear the status and enable the member.  Expected behavior is that once the member is disabled, the folder becomes writable again because enabling it will initiate a fresh sync.  How do I get the file system filter driver to stop protecting the folder of a disabled member without rebooting the server?

Hello,

We have been experiencing for the last 2 weeks a problem with our folder within the DFS-Namespace. Permissions on "Folder" not target, are being reset and only administrators have permissions.

Namespace server having the issue is a DC Running on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Other namespace server are running Server 2008 and Windows Server 2012 R2 and not having issues, they are also DC themselves.

Thank you,

Windows Server 2012 R2 wouldn't response SMB Negotiate Protocol Request

Hello

I've got an windows 2012 r2 as a file server,  it worked fine with windows client but not with lunix-based client

I first discovered this problem on an Android phone:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b3a8a7f9-f4b7-4b9f-b586-2ec87fc14d71/cant-access-shared-folders-on-win-2012-r2-with-android-phone?forum=winserverPN

then I did some test on a newly installed lunix OS on a VM today, I found that my server do not response SMB Negotiate Protocol Request from my phone or the testing OS at all.

when I try smbclient -L ServerIP, I get

read_socket_with_timeout: timeout read. read error = Connection reset by peer.
Receiving SMB: Server stopped responding
protocol negotiation failed

the wireshark capture are like this:

Is it possible to forcefully map shared folders that you don't have access to?

$

My question might come off as pointless, but I assure you I have a reason behind asking this,

At our organization, we used to have access to a network resource that was kind of like a central repository. They redid a lot of the network configurations a couple years ago and rolled out new images to all of the computers, and since them, we are no longer permitted to access this resource. All of the stuff that was once there is still there.

Is it still possible to map this drive even though it is no longer being mapped for us? I know I won't have access to it but I still feel the sentimental feelings behind it lingering.

I have tried:

Using the Map Network Drive Dialog - If I try mapping it this way, it prompts me for the credentials to connect to the share the folder is located in
Using net use If I try it in the format net use x: \\server\share\folder\subfolder\subfolder\folder2map then when I run that batch file, it prompts me for a username and password. I tried changing it to net use x: \\server\share\folder\subfolder\subfolder\folder2map /USER:%username% /P:No where %username% is my username on the domain, but then it still prompts for a password. My goal here is not to have access to the resource. But I still want to see it mapped in My Computer. I know this might not make sense, but I have seen it done before. At certain times, I'll see network drives with a red X on them and I attempt to open them it will tell me "Access is denied." But obviously they were somehow mapped even without the proper permissions, so is there some way that I can force the folder to map again? I feel that if it can be done unintentionally when I don't want it, I should be able to map it again forcefully when I want to, regardless of access to the resource.
This is a picture I found online showing what that looks like (what I would like to see for the folder in question):

Image

I would still have my other drives map normally but then have that disconnect map drive display as such,
I would appreciate any insight on this matter,

The SMB client failed to resume a handle on a file share with continuous availability

Hi.

We have a 2-node WS2012 cluster that has a file server role with couple shares configured.

We're however constantly getting spammed by the following errors in the eventlog:

1) event 1002, source: SmbServer, message: "RKF failure - SRV2 failed to get acknowledgement from Resume Key filter for persistent handle request."

2) SCOM has an alert opened with this description: "SMB client failed to resume Continuously Available (CA) handle as Resume Key Filter is not acknowledging the handle." Per the alert knowledge, we've inspected ResumeKeyFilter eventlog, but it contains only informational message and warnings and none of those are from the time the alert was created.

Hi guys,

I just switched to use the Robocopy to backup the data between 2 servers via network. During the testing, I found that the SKIPPED numbers in Summary are not tally as below

Total    Copied   Skipped  Mismatch    FAILED    Extras
    Dirs :      6379      1        0         0           0         0
   Files :     48378     62     8316   0          0        14
   Bytes :  32.639 g  233.09 m  32.411 g         0         0    6.14 m
   Times :   1:12:07   0:29:49                       0:00:00   0:42:18

Following are the options used at the script  Options : *.* /S /E /DCOPY:T /COPY:DAT /PURGE /R:2 /W:30

Could you please help to check and guide me how to fix the number and make it tally.

Cheers

Hi Experts,

Just want to find a tool or any script to run on windows fileserver which hosts more than 30 share folders copied from legacy server 2003. Is there a tool which can produce a log of accessed share folders for lets say 3 months time and find the share folders not accessed for months may be years so that can be deleted safely. Tried some tools found on this website https://www.raymond.cc/blog/track-who-modified-or-deleted-files-in-your-shared-folder/ but all of them is kinda shows current share accessed by users also tried sysinternal tools no luck.I know I can see sessions on computer management but its also not helping me as I want to go back couple of months. Checked the audit on GPO but we only do failure audit on object access. Help!!!

How to share folders

I just cant figure this out...

We have a new Server2012r2.

Default installation: simply added to the network. In Explorer - Network i see all other computers. And all other computers can see Ser2012. A few folders have been shared with Everyone, which is great, and works fine.
(i should add that i have added the role File & Storage Services)

i want to create a folder DataDav just for user Dav (on a Win7) to see and use. But i cant. I've tried everything i can think of, but i just cant get this working.

Please explain.

I did try creating *another* user on the server and giving perms to the folder - but that means Dav has to log in twice. Once to his pc, once to this folder. We want *one* login, but i dont understand how to get Dav known to the server. (under Share-Permissions only Ser2012 shows in Locations)

How to Remove File Classification Infrastructure (FCI) Property / Declassify Files

Hello All:

We're working with Window Server 2012R2 and FCI.  I am able to apply FCI classification rules and remove them with no issues. However, how do we remove the FCI property once it's been applied?  I know this can be done manually file by file but that's not going to happen.  What am I missing? Thoughts?

Previous Versions Restore not restoring NTFS permissions

I've noticed this with Server 2008r2 Standard and Server 2012 Standard.

Steps to reproduce:

- Create folder path on non-system drive (D:) - D:\Folder1\SubFolder2

- Change permission on SubFolder2 (add domain users as an explicit permission - say, read only)

- Shadow Copy snapshot the volume

- Delete SubFolder2

Test1 - I restore Folder1 (using "Restore", not "Copy" or "Open") and I see SubFolder2 is back, but the explicit permissions have NOT been restored.  The permissions are inheriting from Folder1.

Test2 - Instead of restoring Folder1 I re-create SubFolder2 and restore SubFolder2 - same results - permissions are not restored, but are inheriting from Folder1.

Now - I can see the explicitly-set permissions if I open the previous version and look at the properties of SubFolder2 - So they DO appear to be part of the snapshot.

How do I get a restore to work WITH permissions?

Thanks

Home Folder Pointing to DFS namespace mapping Issue

$

Hi All,

In Active Directory I have configured the users profile to point their H:\ drive to the namespace \\domain\homefolders\users\Arunj  also enable the ABE on Users share.

When users are logon to the domain, H: drive will map correctly and no issues. But laptop users got the following issue.

When they disconnect from the network  H: drive disappeared from the Computer. Even when they connect back to the network or wireless, H drive not map. also over the VPN have to map manually.

Look like %HOMEPATH% and %HOMESHARE% variables are not resolved correctly via the DFS.

So I created new GPP setting as follows:

User Configuration/Preferences/Windows Settings/Drive Maps

But this didn't work either.

I think we have to set this via logon script and set topersistence.

So how do i resolve this issue?

Hi All,

I have two DFS Servers one in HQ and one in DR.  i got 5 sites with DC's. I want all users are connect to one share folder ( Project) in DR Server.

I have set following but still some users ( Only 2-3) are connecting to read only mode in HQ server?

 1.  Under \\domai.local\dfs\project -Folder Target set the referral order

      HQ: Last among all Target

      DR: First among all target

2. Namespace Target properties - No changes

3. Under Replication

      HQ: Read only

      DR:  Read/write

     make DR as primary member

Do i have to set Namespace Target referrals?
